  1. Either Earl Hines or Joe Pass, depending on which goes Last Chance first.
  2. Woody Herman Presents Volume 1: A Concord Jam Willie Rodriguez And The International Stars ‎– A Bunch Of Bongos
  3. Brandnew CD, this italianate harpsichord music (the Barrière pieces) must have sounded shocking to the French audiences at the time. Excellent peformanceand sound!
  4. Thanks - I didn't search in that time span. Really an odd compilation.
  5. Just the first three tracks, which have excellent Roy Ayers solos. Next is the Audiofidelity SACD of this one, my favourite Sonny Clark album.
  6. I saw that Star Chaser download on amazon, but they, too, don't list it any longer. Those downloads are a pain in the ..... compiled hastily by CD rippers hunting for a fast dollar.
  7. There are very few exceptions. The one that comes to my mind immediately is the Mary Stallings /Cal Tjader LP which had different OJC numbers on LP and CD: Fantasy LP 12"3-325 — Cal Tjader Plays, Mary Stallings Sings Fantasy LP 12"8068 — Cal Tjader Plays, Mary Stallings Sings Original Jazz Classics LP 12"OJC-284 — Cal Tjader Plays, Mary Stallings Sings Original Jazz Classics CDOJCCD-1106-2 — Cal Tjader Plays, Mary Stallings Sings
  8. Lucky Thompson was in geat form during his days in Europe. He only regretted that the accompanists sometimes were not up to par. The only tracks newly released on the Star Chaser download are those from Lausanne and two from Mézières - so they probably had their own tape sources. Too bad they didn't include all the material available from any of the performances. ????? I do not see "Tenderly" among the Star Chaser tracks or any other Thompson recording since 1957 ....
  9. With each listen I am amazed at the high quality of her playing and the intelligent program choices. This time I accidentally hit random play and it still sounds convincing, due to the fact that all but two pieces are in the same key, sol majeur/mineur (g major/minor), which she connects with the roi soleil - so as symbolic key for the sun king. She wrote an excellent essay on the subject a while ago. Great sound to, of the "golden" harpsichord at the Swiss museum at Neuchâtel.
  10. There was a Blue Note Tim Hagans CD with Belden, Animation/Imagination, but it did not include this track. That album was recorded in May, 1998 Maybe a take that ultimately was not chosen for release? The 1997 date was one of the sessions for Belden's Blue Note album Tapestry.
  11. 12. That was one of the conclusions of the doucumentary, too - but what what would cinema be without Bardot or Deneuve?
  13. Maybe it was just me . my interest in music of the swing era was reborn about two years ago, so I probably would hear it all differently today.
  14. My copy is ready for shipping at my dealer's warehouse - looking forward to it. So there are still copies around.
  15. R.I.P. One of the most distinctive alto sounds ever.
  16. This morning, selections from these discs:
  17. A look into the Lord disco tells me there are some unissued tracks and some alternates from diverse sources - depends on whether Mosaic includes these.
  18. There was an excellent documentary on Vadim on French/German arte tv recently - his work was a mixed bag and he obviously did not have a dedicated cinematic vision like his contemporaries; but he was open to experiments and cleared the path for many things to come in French cinema. He started the career of several famous French actresses.
  19. I always gave some of his solos to my conga drum students to memorize - perfectly clear drum sound and conception, especially from these albums: He plays only one solo on the Ammons jam session, but it is exemplary. He had the perfect balance of swinging phrasing and straightahead Cuban feel.
  20. Listening to quite the other end of the sound scale, somehow; Excellent new CD, very fine playing, program choices and commentary by the harpsichordist, and excellent sound. Highly recommended.
  21. I wholeheartedly agree about the superior quality of those Musicraft tracks!
  22. Listening to the complete double LP and your comment have convinced me the Hines Mosaic is indeed indispensable - excellent music, and I enjoy Eckstine's vocals a lot. My wife enjoys the music to, so no ojections from that side.
