  1. That Charpentier disc looks interesting ... the sheer amount of CDs I still haven't heard almost drives me crazy. Now playine some Wilhelm Friedemann Bach keyboard music: Guy Penson on Ricercar (no image on the web) Maude Gratton on Mirare Both include a misattributed piece - Penson a set of Variations by Hiller from an obscure 19th century anthology, Gratton the c minor keyboard fantasy that many fell for although it is known since the 1970's that it was composed by Wilhelm Hässler. Playing-wise, both are among the best, but one should ignore the booklet notes of the Gratton disc which reproduce old clichés about the composer's life and personality long corrected by recent research. p.s. turns out I have the Charpentier disc ..... I've been buying too much over the years, it seems.
  2. R.I.P. I remember two of his films broadcast on German TV: His version of Alice in Wonderland with plenty of novelty visual effects, and his take on Molière's Un Bourgeois Gentilhomme, which was very funny, kind of anticipating the approach of historically informed opera performnces by Hervé Niquet and others. I really would like to see them again. Maybe arte tv will re-broadcast some of his work ...
  3. Totally agree with you, except that I would prefer a Contemporary LP engineered by Howard Holzer or Roy Du Nann over any Van Gelder recording.
  4. You're a bit late to the game, but better late than never. Modern remastering has improved so much that vintage jazz can indeed sound much better on CD, but that's due to the remastering, not the medium as such. It all depends. I still regret selling some mono LPs that would sound killer with my new mono cartridge. But you're perfectly right, e.g. the Mosaic Ellington sounds so much better than the French CBS LPs .... What are the young jazz fans listening to? Are they taking attention to detail? Because that's what's lost if the compressed files are not transferred properly. There is great potential to the new media - imagine every bit of music being available for streaming, even the rarest stuff, at your fingertips ....
  5. That's one of the most beautifully played and conceived cello CDs ever!!! Definitely out of print. Not one used copy to be found anywhere. (I'm glad I have one, and bought a second one for a cello playing friend.)
  6. agOqique just informed me they are in the process of changing distributors and website - all is well.
  7. Judging from their facebook page everything is okay and they just finished recording another CD ... Next disc in the player:
  8. Yes - but it will be a rarity soon, I'm afraid: There are signs the label agOgique is out of business. Their website is down for weeks, and most retailers list the majority of the catalogue as no longer available ... p.s. just sent them a message through their facebook page. Will keep you updated.
  9. Carnival "Rosenmontag" made that I have a surprise day off and can throw some into the player - listening to excerpts from the following:
  10. One more gone of the generation that forged my early jazz listening experiences - R.I.P., and thanks for the music and the courage.
  11. So all the pre-orders have been shipped?
  12. I know it's not one of the musicians, but the pic was too nice to ignore ..... One for the modern furniture and sexy covers threads just as well.
  13. Playing the Jean Rondeau disc repeatedly since it arrived yesterday - excellent, hghly recommended. It will be hard for me to listen to any other recording of these concertos from now on.
  14. As good as I expected it to be - he finds something new to say in every piece. The BWV 1056 comes almost lightfooted, elegant, galant style, other performers tend to emphasize the powerful side of this work. Recommended.
  15. On to the third LP - the percentage of commercial stuff is much lower than expected. The band swings much, thanks to the unselfish drumming of Jimmy Crawford.
  16. PASQUA Surani Maruggia 2015 Primitivo di Manduria Denominazione di Origine Controllata
  17. Thanks all! The Mosaic and CBS Lunceford boxes are on the birthday presents table, so it couldn't have been bad. We had a very nice dinner with a befriended couple yesterday, as the Italian restaurant of our choice is closed on Tuesdays, and this evening after work it was watching swing big band film shorts with my wife - nice and relaxed, all is well. My wife gave me a card reading: Getting older is like climbing a mountain - the higher you get, the farther the view ....
  18. .. on to the second of four LPs - groovin' music.
  19. Keep on kickin' and enjoy the moment! Happy Birthday, Hans!
