I hate the term 'Latin Music' - much too broad, about the same as 'Jazz'. I'd prefer to talk about specific bands and musicians. Just as many as there are recipes for sauce ...

They were the most progressive, open minded salsa band of the time - e.g. Nelson Gonzalez (I think it is him) electrifying his tres. The guys at Fania were much more "conservative" The Blood, Sweat & Tears of all salsa bands, with players of the same high caliber.

Nicky Marrero was a great timbalero that undeservedly always stood in the shadow of other, more famous players, but he was every bit as good.

This had made me curious - managed to find a cheap copy in good condition. I wonder why this escaped me when it was first released, as it is wonderful music and a repertoire rarely performed. The soprano could use less vibrato, though ... Thanks for the unintentional recommendation.

Weather Report, the edition with Alphonso Johnson, Chester Theompson, and Alex Acuna. Herbie Hancock, Dis Is Da Drum concert tour. But both were noting compared to the levels Turkish engineers turned up on the festivals I played with a Kurdish band between 2000 and 2008. I always walked in there with earplugs. You could barely distinguish what was happening on stage.

I remember I once had a Liberty LP reissue (that omitted two tracks, for whatever reason), and being dissapointed - a rather routine affair, uninteresting repertoire, played well, but without the spark you expect from these players. Superfluous.

On this DVD you can see and hear Loriod & Messiaen disussing some pieces and telling stories about the early recordings, it has English subtitles.

There was a thread on Ellington Is Forever, but I find his other Fantasy LPs a bit more interesting. The Fantasy LPs all have that dreaded bass pickup sound, but musically they are a good bunch. Maybe another thread?

Turns out I have downloads of Night Song as well as Asphalt Canyon Suite on an external hard drive hooked to my old Windows XP computer. When I started it, everything turned out fine, much to my surprise, and I can access a few hundred albums downloaded several years ago. Will listen to these and check back in again.
