  1. Sometimes I think you develop your ideas in youth, and spend your life as an artist trying to refine them. Once you reach that point, what will you do? Few musician re-invented themselves completely. I think Tony Williams did after 1970. I wouldn't blame Sonny, you have to make a living - I only think he played his solos much too long in the last 20 or 30 years.
  2. 10 CDs - wow! Since I have most of what will be left off and have rather little of what's included, I will try to save up the funds for it, once Jazz Messengers offer it. What always drives me mad about these sets is when they omit a track just because the musician featured didn't play on it, like the one track from the Dizzy Gillespie session. I think they should keep such important sessions complete.
  3. Dave Brubeck was told to fire Gene Wright, but refused. George Shearing encountered similar situations - guess what he told agents and others why he did not care. I should mention I once lost a gig with a Kurdish singer, the agent who was very satisfied with our playing told me the concert venue managers wanted "a more ethnic" sound and thought a German bassist and percussionist did not fit into that concept. Now she has all Kurdish/Turkish players (on part Western instruments) and does world tours. I don't mind, as she deserves her success, but this kind of thinking sickens the world. A month ago a German didgeridoo player lost an important gig because the concert venue manager accused him of cultural usurpation. I am waiting for the day when somebody wants to forbid me playing African drums. Many shades of the same crazy attitude. People fighting integration, trying to defend a purity of culture that vanished long ago.

  11. Such sad news. R.I.P. Our local piano matador, Uwe Oberg, played a tribute concert to her and Anette Peacock with their compositions on October 7. Who would have thought .... I saw her perform with the band that recorded Sextet for her Watt label. That was a great band, even better with Wayne Krantz on guitar playing more integrated into the band. I think that was a totally unexpected facet of her many musical personalities. I still know the music by heart, although I sold the CD many years ago. My thoughts are with Steve Swallow and her family. One hilarious moment was when she was booed at the Berlin Jazz Festival and responded with a tune she had prepared in expectation of that - Boo to you, too! Thanks for posting this - that's so great.
