  1. This one even has it in the title:
  2. I remember a Hubbard quote in the liner of the Brooks Mosaic: "Tina made my first album sound beautiful" or something like that. True. Will put it on the playing pile for tomorrow.
  3. Hidden track? 1. Mars 2. Leo * 3. Venus 4. Jupiter Variation * 5. Jupiter 6. Saturn Tracks marked * are bonus cuts not on the first LP version but on one of the "Mastery" LP series. That's all there is, AFAIK. Cuscuna included only Kulu Se Mama and Selflessness in the Major Works box because they were the only titles recorded at that session (and with an expanded grouplike the other pieces). At that time he still tried to sort out some of the scattered release patterns. I have to admit I like it much better that way.
  4. Will do! Actually, don't forget there are TWO Selects! I know, but I had the one Artists House solo piano LP included in the solo select, and it didn't thrill me that much. But I absolutely love his ensemble writing!
  5. There was a 2 CD box "The Major Works of John Coltrane", including both takes of Ascension, Om, Kulu Se Mama, and Selflessness - but I think that's not quite what Chewy wants. Besides that and the live in Japan box, that's it. Go for the single CD releases. But it would be a nice idea ....
  6. I heard Henry Cain on a Bobby Bryant LP on Argo and liked him a lot! I always wondered what else he had recorded.
  7. Hard Bossa
  8. Got me the Mobley last week, it was on my want list for sooooo long .....
  9. Indeed - I was too young to have seen him perform and thank you all.
  10. When I think of the impact Elvin had on local jazz drummers - it goes so far that they seem to think jazz drumming started with him and they hardly care to deeply check out the stylists before him except when they start playing. Only Jack deJohnette's impact is comparable, but he came out of Elvin (and Tony Williams). Elvin had more impact because I think the guys over here listened to Coltrane more than to Miles from the 1960's. And Elvin toured here frequently with his Jazz machine, whereas Tony was in Europe only on festivals, rarely with his own band, and this was so much into black music or fusion at the time that most jazz musicians rejected it. Elvin somehow was much more accessible as a rodel model, too. That freewheeling approach was sympathetic to most drummers here, beacuse they found a justification to let go and play themselves instead of just backing up the band and keeping time - to the extent that some don't really know how to do that, IMO - I'm speaking of semi-pros, of course, the pros have it all down.
  11. Hip Vibrations never was on CD, only single tracks on compilations. Mostly pop tunes, but nicely arranged by Benny Golson and Bobby Bryant with good solos all around, Herbie Hancock among them. LP copies in good condition are easily found. The Prophet was on CD in Japan but hard to get elsewhere or pricey. It has a basic quartet of Tjader, Joao Donato on organ (!), Red Mitchell, and Ed Thigpen, with overdubbed trumpet, flute (who take one solo each), sparse voices and strings, arranged by Don Sebesky - it's much more tasteful than one might expect, in fact it is one of my favorite Tjader albums. The basic quartet plays so well I'd love to hear it without the overdubs. Donata was a great jazz organist when required.
  12. The Bobby Jaspar Riverside (i.e. Elvin's solo work on it) is the perfect illustration to this and my post above:
  13. I got one of those from Dusty Groove at discount price. The 1st and 3rd are from 1954-55, pure mambo jazz in small group settings; the 3rd has a lot of small tracks as percussion features. "Tjader" is from 1970 and features his soul jazz hit "I showed them". Yes it's rare - seems this is still an overstock from the first Japanese pressing - get it, even if you don't like it you can sell it later on. I doubt Concord will get this one out soon.
  14. Will do!
  15. I would like to listen to this. I live in Singapore, however, so I would understand if you'd rather mail it to somewhere not as far away. Thanks. Well, you could pay the stamps ..... I'll check the cost on Monday.

    Jim Hall

I have that one - only fault is that it's a bit short ...
  17. Terrible news - another original going to jazz heaven. R.I.P.
  18. So that's in the afternoon ..... I wonder if this is a concert or some wedding hall festival with terrible sound. I will check it as soon as possible.
  19. Have the same trouble opening Mikail's site when using Opera - when I use Internet Explorer it works. Here's what info it has on the two Swiss dates: That's the dates I had posted in my signature just reversed! I will SMS you once we're in town.
  20. When I consider his pre-Coltrane recordings, he always sounded different: a very light sound, lots of ride cymbal variations, complex snare-bass combinations, unorthodox asymmetric solo phrases, tricky references to the basic tempo - it was all there. Only his sound got heavier with the years.
  21. I offer the following: Charlie Haden with Gonzalo Rubalcaba & Paul Motian - The Montral Tapes (Verve, 1997) live recording from the Montreal Jazz Festival, July 3, 1989, 6 tracks >gone<Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers & Max Roach Quintet - Percussion Discussion (French Vogue, 1985) two Argo LPs on one CD: Blakey with Bill Hardman, Jackie McLean, Sam Dockery, Spanky de Brest, 5 tracks incl. a long Gershwin medley, recorded Spring 1957 "Max", with Kenny Dorham, Hank Mobley, Ramsey Lewis, and George Morrow, 6 tracks, recorded January 4, 1958>gone< Will send to the first who posts here quoting my post with the respective item and sends a pm with the snail mail adress - I will ship without jewel case.
  22. I'll take this one if still available - PM underway!
  23. No trouble in recent months, but I had that problem incessantly a year ago, so much I opened up a new account - now I have two ....
  24. When I think of my Mosaic want list, I could swoon ..... Just ordered the Mobley yesterday, as I certainly would kill myself for missing that one. Still haven't got any of the Selects, so when any of them reaches danger zone, I will be at 'em.
