    AOTW

Wouldn't it be better to continue updating at least the alphabetical listing - would be more convenient to have all titles listed by artist in one list to avoid duplicates.

    Herbie Mann

    To my ears, it is!

    Bola Sete

He was a great guitar player! My favorite:
  4. Found out he was raised in Albuquerque .... that explains some. Samples here - sounds nice.
  5. Has anyone heard this? Shew is not one that I associate with this type of music ...
  6. You gotta spare some time and give yourself in to the music. Someone talked of "himmlische Längen" (heavenly lengths) regarding Schubert's sometimes very long movements. My favourite recording is this: Jos Van Immerseel on a Tröndlin fortepiano in excellent condition (the CD title means "Goodbye to a friend"). The label has only a few copies left, so hurry - you can only order from them directly: NorthWest Classics Recording quality is just as great. It's an enhanced CD with some info viewable on your computer. Very intimate and poetic music.
  7. Ask Ron Blake to bring along his favorite trumpet player?
  8. Stating that the newer issues sound worse is not a point convincing me to part with the few I have of these ......
  9. I sincerely hope so - it's a fine tune!
  10. I was wondering why "Patterson's People" didn't make it to the last CD .....
  11. Paul, what brand of bongos are you playin'? I think you should tune the macho a bit higher. I'm talkin' about Lucky Southern here - did you pick this tune from a fakebook or have you heard the original on Airto's record? By turning it into some type of Afro-Calypso that tune looses some of its charm, which is due to the Brazilian influence in the rhythmic phrasing - but don't take me too serious, I'm a percussionist myself and pretty picky 'bout such things. It sure comes across that you have fun while playing, and that's the most important. I envy you - wihs I had a trio like that myself to play my own music, I'm playin' other people's music all the time at the moment.
  12. Universal Europe had announced to have the box out on January 30, and they kept their promise: That very same day the store left a message on my answering box that I could pick it up. (Once I was there they told me they had ordered ten copies but got only two! I had been wise to pre-order ...) I took the opportunity today when I was in Frankfurt for other business and got it. Great stuff - prime Stitt. Nice essay, and a comprehensive collection - I appreciate it very much that even the Stitt band and vocal tracks where Stitt plays baritone are included. (Even though that diminishes my hope for a Gene Ammons box ......). Good job by by the Fantasy/Concord crew.
  13. This only confirms to me that there is a tendency among the majors - at least EMI and SONY/BMG, to whom Mosaic has a good relationship - to have the specialists handle the top level reissues.
  14. Miles Davis Chronicle (Complete Prestige Recordings LP box set), disc one - let's see how far I'll get ....
  15. More proof of Wynton's obsession to comment on everything ......
  16. I wonder what became of that crate ......
  17. It's not yet on their website ..... Piadrum Records
  18. This is one to get! Where can I order this, what's the price? p.s. always loved the sound of those Riversides from Plaza Sound Studio.
  19. I remember he said he took special care that the drums were loud enough in the mix - I agree with Tony that on most jazz records the drums are not loud enough, not on the same level as the other instruments and as lod as they really are - compare it with the balance on a live gig. He also said that most people are afraid of the power of a drum set - another thing I agree upon. I think he wanted that power to come through much clearer and in a more direct way, so he changed the sound. It was during his own Lifetime band period that he made the change - it's there for the first time on that undervalued LP The Old Bum's Rush and in full blossom on Stanley Clarke's first Nemperor LP - there was a hiatus between them. I have the impression he did a lot of thinking during that hiatus .... and his compositional lessons may have started around that time. When did he move to California? He started taking lessons there, IIRC.
  20. Indeed!
  21. Roy was very advanced for his generation. I have to admit I love him more with Trane than Elvin - someone (David Wild?) describes his playing with Trane as "spreading", which hits the nail pretty accurately, methinks.
  22. Ordered a copy of the 4-CD Bitches Brew longbox for half the list price this morning ..... As a bonus, a disc of Donizetti string quartets and a new CD on CPO with Fasch chamber music.
  23. If Universal manages to maintain their release schedule I will get the box by the end of the month .....
  24. The surprise factor in this is probably not conceivable for a non-German: Usually German jazz enthusiasts and musicians alike wouldn't hear nothing about Schlager (German pop songs, which are of the ultra-bland variety in 99% of the cases), but here a young piano trio goes ahead and does a whole CD of pieces all composed by Ralph Siegel, the utmost Schlager composer over here, as a celebration of his 60th birthday, and arranges them in a most entertaining and versatile way. Mr. Bassman brought this one on his last visit, and I sat on the edge of the couch asking myself "where did I hear this f+*'#!& tune?!" I have a lot of respect for these three guys, as they really make it work. Congrats! Carsten Daerr (Piano), Henning Sieverts (Bass, Cello) Bastian Jütte (Drums)
  25. Those Atlantics are a much better listen when arranged in recording order - I burnt them for myself in that order and like 'em much better that way. I have no idea why they mixed up the sessions so much.
