Outrageous gig behavior
mikeweil replied to slide_advantage_redoux's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Earlier this year, the Kurdish singer I work for wanted to try and add a violin player to the band. After many phone calls her musical director had located the guy they wanted, and talked him into joining - he was travelling between Australia, where he risides, Turkey, and Germany all the time. They bought him a plane ticket to Spain where the gig was, and he was to join us on Frankfurt airport. When we arrived in Madrid part of his baggage was missing. We lost an hour and a half at Madrid airport before he gave up, and another hour the next day because he wanted to check if it had arrived in the meantime. (Back in Frankfurt it turned out that had simply forgotten to check in his main bag in Frankfurt.) At least he had his violin .... Now this guy was extremely talented, being able to play twenty different instruments, but also extremely unrestful, not to say hyperactive, always tapping his foot etc. After soundcheck and before the gig we went backstage to eat, and he talked without end, chased around the dressing rooms, downing five beers within 40 minutes before the concert was to begin. Best was, when the band was to walk on stage it turned out he had forgot to bring his violin from the dressing rooms downstairs and had to sit out the first number in which he was to be the main accompanist ..... The band agent cancelled his tickets to the locations of then other gigs and fired him after the concert. He kept calling our musical director for reasons why he was fired ..... We recently met him at a festival where he was playing with another band, and he acted like nothing had happened. -
for those who missed out the cheap Universal Mosaics

I've bought CDs from the Fantasy labels at their Frankfurt shop that never appeared on their website (too few copies, I guess) - and they offered others online I never saw in the shop, so you never know. To make sure, I ordered those online I really wanted to have, and still went to the shop ..... -
Barry Harris steals the show here, AFAIC! Wish he was on more Blue Note albums.

What is going through your head right now?

Some day this thread might rival the "What are you listening right now?" thread ..... -
Sounds good!

Is that track from one of the Galaxy albums? Then it should be a Rhodes. IIRC Cowell used that RMI only on his first LP for Black Lion, and possibly because they didn't have a Rhodes in the London studio where it was recorded.

Most Ellis Columbias are out on CD: Electric Bath - Legacy Shock Treatment - Koch At Fillmore - Wounded Bird Tears of Joy - Wounded Bird Goes Underground - Wounded Bird Connection - Wounded Bird Still missing: Autumn (was on French CBS, OOP) Although I have the latter CD, I would love to see a complete version of the live part of this!

Yes to the first part, and hope you're right to the second!

Sh..... - I forgot to type in "Pablo" when I checked all the labels! But I have the Ellington/Brown ..... -
Given that Mosaic now handles reissues from the Columbia vault, what would you want to see out again? My wishlist here: Thelonious Monk: various live recordings not yet reissued, partly included on "Misterioso" Duke Ellington: A Drum Is A Woman D:E:: anything from the 1960's not yet on CD on Legacy D.E.: 1950's sessions not yet on CD Pony Poindexter: The Pony Express w. bonus tracks (1 AT and 1 Xmas tune from those sessions) Jon Hendricks: Evolution of the Blues + 1 other

When "The Cosmic Scene" was reissued as a Mosaic single, it was clear to me, that SONY had shut down the Legacy series for jazz reissues. I expect all future jazz reissues from the Columbia vaults on Mosaic, which is not a bad thing. I'd rather wait and get pristine sound and bonus tracks. In fact, the last batch of Legacy CDs wasn't officially released in Germany ..... We should send our Columbia reissue wish lists to Mosaic.

No - that bass clarinettist is a Swissman of Italian descent. (Where's ubu?) Maurice Magnoni. Sorry, no ...

Thanks - as soon as my PayPal account has reached the proper figures, I'll be on it! -
That's Gitte Haenning from Denmark, as seen on the original cover of her Lp with the Clarke-Boland Big Band. I have oversized scans of both sides of this cover - PM me your e-mail if you want 'em.

How much is the price incl. shipping to Europe for one or both sets? -
Similar thoughts here - I certainly would prefer a Hutcherson-Land set, with the album with Spaulding perhaps thrown in .....
-
I have to admit I sold my copy after many years - anything by Hill between his two Blue Note periods simply doesn't get me. The Hutcherson ...... I have Knucklebean, and it's a real nice album, and my copy crackles .......

I hear ya, Jim! Same here, basically .......

Not Dörge, and I hear that Bley touch! No - that bass clarinettist is a Swissman of Italian descent. (Where's ubu?) No - all except the drummer are Germans, and it's two guitar players! All three players are French, and it's some exotic jew's harp. Both are Italian, and the saxist's main axe is piano. You'll laugh some when you read the answers on both tracks !!! Thanks a lot for your comments! I will try to have the answers posted before July 1 ..........

Most of today's classical reviewers criticize this pianist for his very sloppy execution! Your remark about "the line between source inspiration and performer" is very interesting, as it's the composer playing here! It's one player overdubbing! Exactly my thoughts about the pianist here! The composer was born in Prague into a German-Jewish family ..... and the sax player is one of the very few in Germany who turns in equally convincing performances in both jazz and classical music; he teaches both. You enjoyed this very same sax player on track 10 of the first disc! Only one player recorded live (!), and using preperation - I'd love to know what exactly he did. Yes, it's the final part of four. I don't hear any rock in here ...... it was recorded by one Katherine Miller at The Studio, New York City! Nate Dorward nailed this - I think he has the biggest and most beautiful sound of all European bassists! See above for the instruments. Yes - both the composer and the arrangers! They will love this commentary! Thanks for the compliment! I appreciate it so much that the critical jazz ears on this board dig the unusual musical excursions on this disc! The compliment goes back to your ears and openness!
