  1. The DCC was recorded for Skye but not released at the time - making a total of two studio and two live discs each for the Skye label. Huracán is indeed nice - it was on a Laserlight CD with two bonus tracks, but LP copies are easily found on ebay or GEMM.com at reasonable prices.

Sad to hear about Shearing's condition - I wish him all the best. These are the titles of the Shearing albums with Tjader: 10" LPs (there may be more): MGM E-252 George Shearing – An Evening With George Shearing 12" LPs: MGM E-3175 George Shearing – A Shearing Caravan MGM E-3264 George Shearing – When Lights Are Low MGM E-3293 George Shearing – In Hi-Fi I wrote that before I bought and listened to these LPs. I revised my discographical entries on these sessions since I listened to the LPs; before that, my info was based on the Bruyninckx disco, which does not list LPs, just 78s and singles, and must be wrong in some cases. Of course you're right about this 1953 session - that Peraza played on this session was one of those Bruyninckx mistakes. I have edited my post accordingly. In case you need a really thoroughly researched Tjader disco for the book I'd be glad to offer you mine. Except for some tracks on samplers, it should be complete. Send me your e-mail adress, and we will work out any details that I can help about. You have made contact with Tjader's son? He posts here every now and then.

Duncan, welocme to the board! I will try to help as much as I can. I am aware that Squeeze Me was attributed to Waller/Williams in both cases on the label and liner, but what they play is in fact the Ellington tune, Just Squeeze Me - check any version if Duke's song and you will notice. I have no idea who made the mistake, but it is the Ellington tune. That album Latin For Dancers is a stereo album assembled from two 1954 sessions collecting all tunes originally recorded in stereo. The Stallings album was indeed recorded in 1961. Which of my posts are you referring to? I work on a Tjader discography and make corrections almost every week - I could e-mail you the lastest version and keep you updated.
  4. Thanks for sharing the pics - good to see Melvin Rhyne is alive and kickin'!
  5. There is quite a number of percussionist in the line-up, but the three above are a permanent group, the Hands On'Semble, one of the most interesting percussion bands in recent years.
  6. Changing the series seems to be part of the game - or lack of knowledge on the side of the new people in charge. It doesn't all matter that much as long as they keep reissuing stuff - some LPRs were digipaks, anyway. I only wish they would add bonus material, which they rarely did in recent years.
  7. In my world, Blue Note is not more important than Riverside, Prestige, Contemporary, Pacific Jazz, Fantasy, Savoy, Verve, you name it. Cuscuna's marketing strategies derserve credit for their dedication and quality standards, but, as with every producer, some of his decisions seem a little subjective to me. But I'm not in this business and better keep my mouth shut. I find some of the cult around the label borders on hype. I wish there was a documentary about each of the other labels. And some engineers made better sound, to these ears, than RVG. But I'm not really complaining. I'm glad all that music is there and available - or much of it, as it were.
  8. Is this currently available on CD? I always thought I should have that one, and the description of the instrumentation makes me even more curious.
  9. I had them all at one time or another, and sold them all after a while. There are some good tracks on them, and some interesting combinations of musicians - the biggest surprise being the appearance of Keith Jarrett on Sky Dive - but Hubbard dominates all other players on these sessions so much that nobody could come close to stealing the show. His ego begins to show on these productions. He had such good sax players, but wouldn't treat them as equal partners on the records: He's louder in the mix, gets more solo space etc. He did that to an excellent James Spaulding on one of his last Atlantic LPs, The Black Angel, and it continues on the CTIs. Junior Cook, Joe Henderson - what more can you want. But he wouldn't really let them shine beside him. One great moment is that somewhat over-arranged but still fascinating rendition of Beiderbecke's In A Mist on Sky Dive. Just my taste, of course. I never understood Columbia's reissue policy of the CTI albums - some of the best remain unissued (except for Japan, maybe): Ron Carter's All Blues with Joe Henderson and Sir Roland Hanna (arguably his best CTI) Joe Farrell's Outback with Chick Corea, Buster Williams and Elvin Jones. New York Jazz Quartet Live In Japan - the CD that was issued presented new material, but the one originally issued on Salvation (the sub-label) was equally fine.
  10. Maybe he did use his hands - or lips - on what caused the accident .....
  11. BTW - I compiled a Don Patterson discography - here 'tis for download. Please e-mail any additions or corrections, I will keep it updated. I plan to make my own CDR of all Patterson ballads - any suggestions? p.s. Discography updated May 27, 2006!
  12. Up - for no particular reason, just to keep the discussion goin'. I'm listening to Don's 1964 Prestige take on The Good Life right now - indeed a sublime and yet powerful performance, as Jim pointed out. Long live Don Patterson! I'm completing my Patterson CDs by and by - just some Prestige with Stitt that's missing. The two recorded a lot together!
  13. I think styles and categories make less and less sense in times where a multitude of style exists on the scene, on one label, and even within one CD. You always loose so much when you label it under just one category. It may help filing, yes - but I seriously consider filing my collection some day, when I have entered everything into a database, simply by label and number .....
  14. Sounds like a partial dropout to me - a defect in the tape. Not longer than two seconds. Things like that are normal for tapes that age.

Thanks! Some more that he's on: Harold Vick, Straight Up, ?, 1966 O'Donel Levy, Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky, Groove Merchant?, 1974 I thought he was on some Grant Green session, but it seems I was wrong.
  16. I have added a list of all major doorbellists to the initial post - please help tp complete this!

  18. It's an excellent, spirited session, but the best edition is the hybrid SACD Fantasy issued - great sound!

This drummer keeps catching my attention by his grooves - not quite your average soul jazz band drummer. He always has a very original edge to him, plays nice variations of Latin and boogaloo patterns. What became of him? Any biographical info, anyone? So far I identified the following sessions that he played on, I'd be grateful for any hint at more. George Braith, Soul Stream, Blue Note, December 16, 1963 Kenny Dorham, Last But Not Least 1966, Vol. 2, Raretone, February 25, 1966 (live bootleg) John Patton, Got A Good Thing Goin', Blue Note, April 29, 1966 John Patton, Understanding, Blue Note, October 25, 1968 Harold Mabern, Rakin' and Scrapin', Prestige, December 23, 1968 Buck Hill, Buck Hill Plays Europe, Turning Point, 1982
  20. Bracing what?
  21. There is another Black Lion CD Citizens Bop with Gray and Dexter Gordon which duplicates the four master takes from your CD but is still worth seeking out. I too, bought this used, and was not disappointed - Gray was the most boppish of all Lester Young disciples, methinks, with a good dose of Charlie Parker, very fluent, his own man, and somwhat stronger in sound than the Brothers, but still not as hard sounding as Dexter. I always liked him a lot. I will have another listen tomorrow for that Monkish overtones.
  22. R.I.P. Truly shocking. What a passionate player he was.
  23. I see your point, but on Stellar Regions I think she is a perfect counterpart - any other pianist of the time might have interferred with Trane's need for a self-effacing but present pianist. I wish he had lived and this band had played on for some more years - I find this to be some very concentrated music, just like the duets. I also think we perhaps could appreciate Live at the Village Vanguard Again much better if we had a complete performance, or even a video. This certainly was new and exciting then, but much of what Trane recorded was experimental, like Miles' stuff since In a Silent Way, and most of it shows a little too much it is not a perfect artistic statement.
  24. (Please apologize if this has been posted before.) These are announced on the Blue Note upcoming releases page: UPCOMING REISSUES Cannonball Adderley - Why Am I Treated So Bad! Lou Rawls - Black And Blue/ Tobacco Road Serge Chaloff - Boston Blow-Up Stan Kenton - Sophisticated Approach The Jazz Crusaders - At The Lighthouse The Chaloff is one I have been waiting for - I will definitely get this and the Crusaders disc.
  25. If this is true, it comes as a shocking surprise - wasn't he very active during the recent years? I wait for confirmation, but my thoughts are with him and his family.
