This has Buddy Montgomery on vibes all the way - he was so incredibly great on that instrument. Very underrated! Highly recommended!

A friend of ours liked the (arguably) best known album of Vince, Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus, so much that I gave the CD to him. I rewarded myself for the good deed with the SACD version from Analogue Productions, and it sounds so f...... great that I felt the urge to recommend it here.

Gioia correctly tells about the Police Academy building.

I already started, but have too little time right now. No registration needed, BTW - just hit the edit button preceding the paragraph and you can go ahead. I'd be obliged if you would proofread the biographical details.

My favourite Monk quartet, but I'd rather buy a DVD of this.

Repeat, please ......

I'm afraid you're confusing congas and bongos here - Sabars, or Sabhars, as their name is pronounced correctly, are smaller than congas. This pic shows three congas on stands with a pair of bongos mounted on top, so you can see the size relations: Here are some old style congueros: Here are sabar players to give an idea of the drum size: (should be an interesting CD, BTW: Sabar Wolof-Dance Drumming Of Senegal) On an average, sabar drums are smaller than conga drums.

LF Hank Mobley "A Slice Of The Top"
mikeweil replied to Soul Stream's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Sorry, don't have a spare copy, but I'd say go for the CD, which has much better sound (I had both, but sold the LP after listening to the CD). -
Great choice! I remember it was one of my first Coltrane LPs - those vault issues were easier to find here as they were new releases than the older Impulse LPs. Only tenor and drums, and on what level. I find the variety of moods astonishing. Venus and Mars played side by side make such a great contrast. Jupiter is my favourite - I wonder why nobody plays that theme - it would work even in a more conventional treatment. To compare Ali with Elvin misses the point. Elvin couldn't have done this. He opened the path for free drumming, but pushed all the time, where Ali strikes a broad variety of moods to match Trane's vision. To me, Rashied Ali belongs into the jazz drummers hall of fame for these duets alone. Too bad, found my favourite pic of Ali on the web, but it won't load ..... take this for starters:

Until then, take this SONY 2-disc set (38 tracks):

With two unissued bonus tracks added, my CD runs 39:02 minutes. Yes, a very nice album. In fact, I like all of Shearing's albums with guests I have, no matter if they are vocalists (Peggy Lee, Nancy Wilson) or instrumentalists (Wes Montgomery - well, Shearing was the guest here).

I can add rockefeller center to my list, whom I encountered in a Vienna jazzclub a few weeks ago - an unforgettable evening!

Finally got my copy of this, but only through the sales at Zweitausendeins - the brickheads at ZYX obviously had it in stock, but were unable to send it out. My advantage, as I got it for a mere € 2.99 now that they sell all of their stock to Zweitausendeins ....... It's a wonderful album! Humes is as charming as can be, the soloists are in a fine mood, Shelly Manne kicks the band like only he could. Never would have thought Marty Paich could capture the spirit of the old Basie Band that well. I will look for the other two Humes albums on Contemporary as well - all of them are fun to listen to, if not for the music, just for the wonderful natural sound - but the music is always great. I never was disappointed by a Contemporary album.

That's very nice choice, and I love all the Hutcherson-Land collaborations, but I'm afraid you misunderstood how the Album of the week forum works. Take a look here, send a PM to John S to apply, and start your thread when it's your turn - I'm sure this will attract some commentary. But please look up here to make sure this hasn't been brought up before; in this case, post your comments there. Please delete this post here - no offense intended.

This reminds me of the strange fact that Shorter's tunes - whom I consider to be one of the best jazz composers of his generation - are not played as often as they should be, except for Footprints, which is played ad nauseam.
-
That's such a great blowing vehicle that not even Shorter himself revisited - the Rowles/Mitchell duo plays the shit out of that tune! That album was reissued on a Dreyfus CD, which should be easier to find.
-
Rowles was the first that I thought of. I remember I started a thread about the Rowles-Shorter affinity on the deceased BNBB. Shorter, BTW, returned the favor by recording Rowles' 502 Blues on the Adam's Apple album, and of course The Peacocks on Native Dancer.

Consider the care museums take to preserve prints, paintings, magazines, books, etc. ....... that something survives longer than a few decades is the exception.

Oh sh........ I waited for a friend to confirm that he would join us, and now it's sold out! Too bad .....
-
Now there's a great excuse! I got to memorize this one! No excuse, the awful truth ...... Saturday night one - a music therapist - paid me a big compliment, saying I was right on the beat all the time. Seems they feel intimidated. I dunno.

Miles Davis - The Legendary Prestige Quintet Sessions
mikeweil replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I do hope Zweitausendeins will offer them at the same great prices as they used to when ZYX was distributing Fantasy in Germany, as their business relations to Universal (the new distributor) are not that bad either ... (see the Mosaic/Verve boxes). I have only the old LP version of the Miles Prestige box .... -
Just saw there were two different reissues of the Blues album with differing bonus tracks. What shall I do?
