Bought an older Myron Waldon CD earlier this week for five bucks - Hypnosis. Very passionate player with a sound of his own. Good to hear an alto conception beyond Bird and Cannonball.

Yes, but a small photo of Tony would have made it a lot cooler.

Thanks for the excuse to re-listen to this.

Couldn't agree more. Of all German Schlagerstars, she swung the most, but she also was a natural entertainment talent with genuine humor, without the educated wit most display. Don't blame her she chose to make some money, but she recorded some serious music along the way. Maybe Bear Family, who reissued most of her early singles, will reissue soem of the jazz stuff some day. I virtually grew up with her music - when I was a kid, she was all over German tv - I thought most singers were downright awful, but kind of liked her. Gitte Haenning is another name in that category, but Valente certainly has more chops and swing.

Don't ask me about drummers, regardless of style ... there are dozens, all of them are great and have their own style. It would be injustice to name one before the other.

Heard some Billie Holiday at the Wiesbaden Starbucks yesterday - but this is the kind of jazz I hear in coffehouses all over Europe about two to four times every year ....

I'm getting a feeling of blessed relief .....

I had one of the bronzing Hyperion CDs in question, and got a replacement - the problem was known to the label and stopped their cooperation with that pressing plant. I have one other, which is Italian and just looks very transparent - but like vinyl, one doesn't expect thes discs to last forever ......... But these are the only defective CDs among several thousand.

I hope the bonusses didn't make the suspicious ... Do Swiss customs ask for a declaration badget on letters? I know they do on parcels, but letters?

Making CDR's or buying Disconforme titles..
mikeweil replied to wolff's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I think the main problem is the number of copies a label needs to sell to break even - the larger the company, the larger the number they have to sell. Printing 2000 copies of some rare jazz CD nothing but reduces their total profit, and raises their image with the elusive minority that we jazz collectors are. -
Here's what's available besides the new one and Chile Con Soul (which I dig to death - and had to buy three more copies of for my drum students!): The Jazz Crusaders- Lighthouse '68 1 Oogo-Boo-Ga-Loo 2 Eleanor Rigby 3 Native Dancer 4 Never Had It So Good 5 The Emperor 6 Impressions 7 Cathy The Cooker * 8 Shadows * 9 Tough Talk * 10 Third Principle * * Previously unissued bonus tracks. THE JAZZ CRUSADERS - LIVE AT THE LIGHTHOUSE '66 1 Aleluia 2 Blues Up Tight 3 You Don't Know What Love Is 4 Miss It 5 Round Midnight - (previously unreleased) 6 Some Other Blues - (previously unreleased) 7 Scratch 8 Doin' That Thing 9 Milestones

Talk about errors in discographies ..... the above I have from the Bruyninckx disco. You lucky one seem to have that LP, I suppose?

No doubts about the music here ..... While we're at it: How many live albums did the Jazz Crusaders do for Pacific, and are they out on CD, OOP or not? These will not be part of the upcoming Mosaic box, as I understand ...

Emil, on a base line I agree with you - this is excellent music. I just wondered at the bass sound, which, BTW, varies greatly between the sessions on the CD. As Jim Sangrey stated, the set is worth the price for the Clifford Jordan tracks alone! I'm with you here! What I have heard that circulates on CDR is excellent!

Still listening ... will post some guesses and comments later this week. Very nice mixed bag, and two or three I have ....

advocate for a Wes Montogomery Select?
mikeweil replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
BTW - all of the Montgomery Brothers or Mastersounds recordings with Wes are in print (World Pacific, Fantasy, Riverside) - the Jazzland of George Shearing with the Montgomery Brothers hasn't been mentioned. For that reason I'd rather see a box set of the Brothers' recordings without Wes - much rarer and they were a fine band, period. -
advocate for a Wes Montogomery Select?
mikeweil replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The unabridged Kismet album (Cuscuna found the arrangements without Wes soloing "rather stilted") was added to the LoneHill reissue of the Jon Hendricks World Pacific album "A Good Git Together": The tracks left off the Pacific Jazz CD are not that bad, and the Hendricks jam with Wes is a must for any serious fan. -
Is this a reissue? The announcements I read sounded like this was unissued material .... if so, this was newly designed. They should have reduced the upper white half to one third.

I didn't mean to say it would have worked if Eicher had "helped" - Bley is what he is, unique in the pantheon of jazz pianists. I personally find him much more compelling and original than Jarrett or Corea or anbody else in that league. He makes me want to keep listening and let him guide me along his musical paths no matter where he goes.
-
I found it impossible to play exactly like any of my musical heroes, no matter how hard I tried, and that helped finding my own style, though the influences are easily recognized. But perhaps it's easier for me than for you - I'm German and my ideals are Afro-Cuban, a cultural gap that cannot be bridged completely. For someone from the same culture - probably a lot harder to achieve.
-
This was the album that brought Bley's solo piano artists to the spotlight, IIRC, at least for the European fans. If ECM had helped Bley along as much as Jarrett or Corea ...
-
Of course I have that one .... ..... some nice tracks on it. You are aware this is basically Eddie Palmieri's band on the Latin tracks? If not, check out his lastest CDs on Concord ....

Click here for the current Montreux festival - running right now. Can't find any Tjader tribute there. Was it Monterey, by any chance?
