Without any web research I know there was a Milt Jackson tribute at some European festival a few years ago, with Hutcherson duetting with bags. Saw some of that on tv. Tjader? Will do a search.

From me to you, too!

I agree, although the chief of the Framkfurt Saturn jazz and classical CD department where I buy a substantial part of my monthly share, is an exception: he played drums in his teens - jazz, that is - , loves and knows the music and tries to keep a representative seclection at fair prices in stock. But he does not get any advance information from the labels about upcoming releases - he gets them from the jazz press or the web like you and me. If it weren't for people like Belden and Cuscuna, we would get even less reissues, that's for sure.

Organissimo is in the studio...
mikeweil replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Any estimation when it's going to hit our collective ears? -
I think I will continue with this one, as it is readily available. Thanks!

Only if I'm able to stick to it... ← You DID!!!

Very soulful player that wore his heart on his sleeve, unique sound. He plays some great expressive solos on Victor Lewis' Audioquest CD. I was afraid I would read this after the reports on his illness .... R.I.P.

Thanks for the link, Jim - what of this worth would you specifically recommend for a soul enchanted by this solo disc? I think the half hour of unreleased music is worth getting the CD, just as good as the rest. Sound could be better, too, as Folkways owns the original tapes.

If you have some intererest in excellent acoustic guitar playing and/or Brazilian music, this will not disappoint you. He sings a few titles, but it is so charming. Plenty of highly developped technique - he was trained by an Uruguayan classical teacher - but the chops never get in the way of the expression. Simply delightful. Short pieces, a lot of diversity, surprisng turns, great variety of moods - charming! My interest was piqued by the downbeat review, and the music by far surpassed my expectations. Please post after you got it - I'm sure you will!

It would be easier to help you if you stated what you specifically want. Why didn't you include issue numbers? Do you have the Riverside box? Or do you want to know whether this is the complete contents of the box set? There were two editions, an LP set in Italy, and a CD set by Fantasy. The latter has a few more tracks. You could check here - but this may contain some inaccuracies.

Dem disks jumped over de drink in no time! Will pass em on later dis afternoon.

Happyssimo Birthdayissimo!!!

This gets my vote for reissue of the year!

I'm not a guitar freak, but a favourable downbeat review made me curious, and after only a short listen at a Frankfurt shop last week I took it home. This is one of the greatest solo acoustic guitar records I ever listened to! The liner places Bonfá among the best guitarists of the 20th century - no exaggeration. Downright beautiful, inspired, recorded and remastered very well and an extremely rare item until this CD reissue. Run and get this!!! Or do you have it already?

One more comment: The bass sound is not to my liking, picked-up, as was getting the habit at the time, and on the Henderson his intonation leaves something to be desired. Something missing at the bottom end of the frequency range - the engineers at our local Frankfurt radio station made better jazz sound at the time - and without relying on pickups. The fact that they took so much time to rehearse the horn arrangements puts this above average. This confirms Kleinschuster was one of Europe's best 'bonists!

I wonder why it took them so long to remember that one. I have an early Fresh Sound Lp reissue of this - it is the jazziest and swingingest album of June I ever heard! Do not miss this one!

Mike, as far as musical analysis is concerned, I agree with you on the similarities between Kind of Blue and Giant Steps. But these two albums transport totally different moods, and I think that's in part what Soul Stream referred too.

That would be the Infant Eyes I mentioned... He's on Infant Eyes, yes, but the one I'm talking about is Franklin's "The Skipper".
-
I have that Mapleshade solo CD - there are several SteepleChase albums with him. Some on BlackJazz, too, one with Henry Franklin, great groove here. Never heard him play badly - very underrated, for sure.
-
Concord has been re-releasing titles from their back catalog on SACD - no reason for them to stop. And like Fantasy, they also leased to other SACD labels.
-
What can I say but thanks a thousand times for the joy his recordings gave me and will give me in the years to come, and RIP. Indeed, a woeful year for jazz bass.

I used to hear radioplays based on science fiction stories on AFN in my teens - that turned me to Bradbury, Vonnegut, and others, but ten years ago I stopped reading SF entirely - I was disappointed by the overall level of the writing and the ideas. Too few first-rate writers in the genre, I think.

Trovesi can be heard improvising along with a renowned baroque ensemble on this CD: Whoever liked track 6 might find this appealing just as well, a little more subdued, but a unique experiment. (Link)

SACD Net is a relieable source of info on SACDs, whether there are hybrid or not etc. Complete with links to selected retailers.

Could you please wait until after your trip to the motherland?
