  1. It was in the mail this morning - spinning right now. Nice organ touches on the third track with Jordan - never heard Jordan play that enthusiastically. Great stuff! It's about time European radio stations opened their vaults.
  2. ... hard to find original 18th century mics in decent condition ....
  3. For all friends of this great vibist - frankly speaking I find him underrated, the longer I study his music - I decided to post short descriptions of each album (leader and sideman dates) here for reference, to make buying decisions easier. This is a by-product of my work in progress, the Cal Tjader Discography. I considered posting this on the Cal Tjader Forum, but there is not much happening over there and It doesn't allow posting links to cover pics. I promised to do this on the Los Ritmos Calientes thread, and this will keep me working on the disco and listening through Tjader's music for a critical survey of his work. Please post your comments, requests, and, most importantly, omissions here or on the other thread. There are still about five albums I have not heard, but I am busy purchasing used LPs .... Thanks for your patience!
  4. Heard him first in the VAO alongside Harry Sokal and was impressed by both. Had a nice quartet LP of his but sold it, can't remember details. Nothing to add to Ubu's comprehensive report.
  5. Friday night, it was the quintet Cohimbre from Cuba - unamplified, to my delight, and swinging - they turned the Wiesbaden Latin bar Curioso into a Cuban countryside joint within minutes.
  6. The Larocha recordings of Spanish composers are held in very high esteem in Europe. Can't go wrong with her here. Either Jean-Francois Heisser or Jean-Joel Barbier, two of my favourite French pianists, did one too, but they are hard to find.
  7. Also overdue is Bennie Maupin's "The Jewel in the Lotus". I'm curious how the Priester CD will sound - why don't they issue hybrid SACDs?
  8. Great enough for me and, I guess, anybody else here on the board! Jim, list received, alright with me! I'll be prepared.

    Favorite "Comper"?

Yeah Wynton! How could I forget?!
  10. ... and it's truly for fun, as I have all of this stuff on great(er?) sounding Japanese LPs ...
  11. Above was the second LP, this is the first: Really rare - I have them all, and could have them transferred to CDR some day, but the guy who does this for me will be moving soon ... Should add: The site from where I got the picture has sound files, so you can get an impression.
  12. Here's one of them for sale - look at the price and
  13. Mombasa (the Afro-Jazz band) was great live, but their LPs never caught the sound and groove it had on stage. I saw them many times - Tom Nicholas, their conga drummer, was my first teacher. Besides, they are pretty hard to find even here in Germany.
  14. He played long solos on the gig I attended, but repeated himseld after a while, using the same showy tricks all the time. The groove was there, but as it was a concert type situation with the audience calmly sitting down, they should have opted for a higher level of musical content. I saw them on TV two weeks later in a broadcast from one of Germany's most populat and long-standing jazz festivals - basically, same thing. Carter and Gibbs have more in the can than this. I expect fun and showmanship and groove, which I got, but from a guy with such an abundance of talent at his disposal like James Carter, I expect a little more. Maybe he feels pissed off by the labels - Warner acted strange, left the duo with Chestnut (which is good!) in the can, and the Lady Day tribute on Columbia seemed to be a one shot deal. Yes, he seems to be meandering around searching for a direction - maybe the road experience will help.
  15. I bought most of Trane's Atlantics in a cutout bin back in the early 1970's. I liked Giant Steps the most then, it sounded full and energetic, the bass and drums. Lee Friedlaender made some great cover shots for Atlantic - the David Newman in particular!
  16. ....and: Miles' answer would have been: "The one where he took the horn out of his mouth in time!"
  17. I'll second that. Stellar Region, too, and Transition (the tune).
  18. Who are the sidemen?
  19. Wanted to order this along with the Brian Lynch CD with Fender Rhodes, but the Alexander is temporarily unavailable! I mean, if it sold better than they thought, i'd be the last to curse them ....
  20. So LeDonne is pulling some organ stops on this one? I really dig what he does on the B3.
  21. The Javon Jackson caught my eye as well. Palmetto records excellent organ sound!
  22. Hmmm ... odd stores, but bizarre? Garage sales, flea markets - quite normal, methinks. Where's the real bizarre places?
  23. My credit card will hammer on my head to play the set for it, so it won't take three months! Also, I have a trick: I'll spin the Conn right now, thus your chances are: nil, zilch, zero! ← No Conns allowed ....
