  1. Much of what I would consider essential has been listed. I would include some of each of the following pianists: Jelly Roll Morton Art Tatum Fats Waller (African Ripples and that stuff is great!!!) James P. Johnson Earl Hines Duke Ellington Ralph Sutton's recording of the Bix Beiderbecke pieces Teddy Wilson (Cole Porter Classics on Black Lion) Bud Powell Thelonious Monk (the Columbias) Randy Weston Hank Jones (Savoy) Jimmy Rowles Jaki Byard John Lewis (Evolution or Private Concert) Keith Jarrett Stanley Cowell (Musa-Ancestral Streams) Paul Bley Geoffrey Keezer
  2. Have it, a very nice surprise - but I wouldn't call it one of the essential jazz solo piano discs.
  3. Chuck, amazon.de still lists Vol.6!
  4. Indeed - Atlantic only! Right in between other sessions for DeeGee, Blue Star, and Vogue, before his association with Norman Granz. Doesn't look like a lease.
  5. Besides phishing, some of these hoaxes include tojans or backdoor programs - I recently received one with a faked online phone bill (a .zip file which revealed a double file signature .pfd.exe when unpacked - only if you clicked the unpacked it downloaded another backdoor program). For German speaking members there is great info on a website of TU Berlin: http://www.hoax-info.de BTW that PayPal hoax is on the list on this page: http://www.tu-berlin.de/www/software/hoax/idtheft.shtml
  6. There was an interesting remark in the liner to a recent Peggy Lee Capitol CD reissue stating the engineers at the time were instructed to take utmost care to the mono mix and mastering - stereo was still of slightly less importance in the late 1960's as a market. With the lack of experience in properly balancing instruments in two-track stereo, I can imagine some mono mixes sound better. I wish they would do hybrid SACD with both mono and stereo mixes as a rule, like the recent John Coltrane / Johnny Hartman.
  7. Not bought, but received: Brian Auger & The Trinity - Definitely What Pentangle - newly remastered reissue of first LP with plenty of bonus material Pentangle - The Lost Sessions (recently discovered live material broadcast by BBC)
  8. So some of these were licensed - like Blue Note did with Garner, Sadi etc. - how many of them? Seems all of the early 1950's jazz labels licensed stuff from Europe. I have the impression that formats like 10" LPs and EPs are somewhat neglected in discographies, at least it seems information is harder to get - smaller pressings, etc.
  9. Thanks, Mike, for that link - I can't tell why I didn't bookmark that site I wonder whatever was on those Gillespies ...
  10. Another "authentic" performance is the complete recording of MIKROKOSMOS, made 1958-59 by DITTA BARTÓK-PÁSZTORY, Bartók's second wife: Mikroskosmos
  11. Sadly most of the Kocsis Philips discs are gone or I would have leaned heavily on them for recommendations. I missed vol 6 and recently ordered vol 7 from Berkshire. I just read that an 8-CD box set of the complete Bartok piano music by Kocsis is scheduled for May 31 release in Germany, if that helps. I would like to repeat my recommendation for the composer's own recordings, which are still available from Hungartoton (6 CDs): Bartok at the piano Recordings from private collections
  12. I have to admit I like this very much, and enjoy the work of Novosel and Hopps, two underrecorded players, but agree the piano could be higher in the mix.
  13. ... and for us all to enjoy:
  14. Hellyeah! ← You should browse through the thread - this is another one I already posted - I was sure the US boys wouldn't look for that one
  15. Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag!!! Sorry I'm a little late with my best wishes for the most important man on the board - live long and prosperous!
  16. Were there any? If so, is there an online list? Can't remember any reference to one.
  17. If you like it, sure ... Guaraldi was a great match for Tjader. Had that same affinity for Latin rhythm combined with good jazz chops. The reason the comping is so rhythmic is that it is based on the Cuban concept of accompanying riffs or ostinatos, called guajeos in Cuban music. But this is one of the best live records by one of the best Tjader bands, so you hit the top level with the first purchase, if you know what I mean ...
  18. The latest 2002 Blue Note reissue CD may have the best sound possible - the original three-track tapes were newly remixed. If this sounds to bright for you, use the treble controls. In addition you get 8 great bonus tracks. If they used the United Artists master tape it may sound like the old LP, but that wasn't too good ... I had a French Lp reissue and gladly dispensed of it when the first Blue Note CD came out, and upgraded immediately after listening to the new remix.
  19. ... another rare early Tjader cover along the thread:
  20. These earliest recordings of the Dave Brubeck Trio with Ron Crotty and Cal Tjader were originally recorded for and issued on Coronet 78's before Fantasy bought them - does anybody have the Coronet issue numbers? They are missing in the elaborate online discographies on Brubeck. Thanks, as always! -------------------------- Dave Brubeck (piano) Ron Crotty (bass) Cal Tjader (vibraphone, drums, bongos) San Francisco, California, September 1949 551 Blue Moon Fantasy 4001, Fantasy 3-2, Fantasy 3-204 552 Tea For Two Fantasy 4001, Fantasy 3-2, Fantasy 3-204 553 Indiana Fantasy 504, Fantasy 3-1, Fantasy 3-204, Columbia C4K 52945 554 Laura Fantasy 504, Fantasy 3-1, Fantasy 3-204 ---------------------------------------
  21. I vividly remember the down beat review: * Joe Zawinul reacted like a primadonna. An awful album. Tossed together without much of a concept, one the greatest disappointements making me realize the glorious days of fusion were a thing of the past, like Herbie Hancock's Secrets.
  22. same here - after 4 days with 10 performances of a theatre production I was in, finally some time to finish my examination of # 25 - had to interrupt after half of the tracks. Looking very much forward to the next, seems we're rolliing again.
  23. Back to topic ... could the Jones/Lewis be an indication we might get all the stuff from the Mosaic, one by one? Will get the Jazz Crusaders too ...
  24. Click here for Noal Cohen's Carl Perkins discography - never heard him play badly. Sheldon seems to be standing in Chet Baker's shadow, but methinks for rather superficial reasons. I have always like Sheldon much better than Baker - especially his sense of musical humor.
