  1. I have heard some of that: Both are excellent and underrated musicians!
  2. Slam Stewart and Bucky Pizzarelli did a nice one, I think it was for Stash.
  3. Back to topic: Sebastian Whittaker - great drummer holding the hard bop / Jazz Messengers flame up: (short bio)
  4. Here goes the thread killer ... ?
  5. Done - you guys are great!
  6. It always impaired the sound quality in the cases where I tried or knew it was done. I don't mind volume differences, I just tried to program the tunes in a way avoiding abrupt volume changes - as if there weren't enough apects to watch with sequencing One has to check the standard setting of any burning program, as some include a compression or other procedure. (NERO e.g.)
  7. I'd rather assume Jimmy Smith's attitude didn't allow for imperfect material to be preserved.
  8. Cal Tjader, Puttin' It Together (Fantasy, 1973) Nice live recording from Concerts by the Sea.
  9. Don Patterson, Soul Happening (Prestige/Saba, 1967) with Vinnie Corrao and Billy James. This deserves a CD reissue - gladly my second attempt to get a used copy on eBay was successful. This includes one of his grand ballad treatments, Love Letters.
  10. Probably one of the two SACD hybrid releases (they play on any standard CD player, usually with great sound). After the Analogue Productions SACD will go OOP Fantasy will release this in the US as well, I'm sure - the second available is from Fantasy Hongkong. Go here for info. There is a K2 remaster from Fantasy, that should sound fine, too. p.s. all but the Analogue Productions SACD inlude three alternate takes as bonus tracks.
  11. A very fine album - wonder why they didn't record any sooner. Broom gets better and better as an organ combo player - and his choice of pop tunes and the way he treats them is superb.
  12. But the cover for Mas Ritmo Caliente is nice, too:
  13. Wonder if they did a new photo session for the cover of the twofer LP reissue:
  14. Here's the CD cover for comparison:
  15. I'd still like to know how they got away with THAT one back then! This cover is on the Los Ritmos Calientes CD. I guess no one ever really looked that close. (Well, except for me! ) The reproduction on the CD is so tiny it leaves plenty room for speculation ... Count me in for closer looks
  16. Nice little album, but his latest Latin adventure is even better: http://www.cubanmusic.com/Bands/DAVE_PIKE_PELIGROSO.htm
  17. There was a symposium in Germany two or three years ago on exactly that subject: Heart rhythms and musical rhythm, especially in Africa - fascinating. The Indians consider the typical rock beat, dum-dum-tah, dum-dum-tah as being extremely negative to human health, BTW. Link to the symposium - sorry, most is in German.
  18. Perhaps it is the slightly different timing a percussionist adds to the band, certainly not the usual jazzy triplet feel. I think it fits the Brazilian mood of the piece. Might be something to simply get used to - when I started playing in jazz groups I sometimes go that kind of reaction, even from fellow musicians. The phrasing is different, and maybe that clashes in your ears. No offense intended. The berimbau is indeed difficult to use in such a context, as you have only two notes a half or whole step apart to play, so it's a drone, basically, that will not fit every chord, inevitably. So its Haddad (tapping my own shoulder ), and he plays a pandeiro, which is the Brazilian tambourine - really sounds like an Indian kanjira at times the way he handles it. Interesting disc - as cheap as Naxos Jazz CDs are, this will be purchased soon! Thanks for including!
  19. Album covers, #3 - that was the original!
  20. Album covers, #2:
  21. Some rare Tjader covers along the way. That's Armando Peraza on the conga drums.
  22. She's my favourite, too - most beautiful tone on the instrument, IMHO.
  23. Jiří Stivín playing a sopranino recorder in 1976 - BTW, these have nine holes, not eight ....
  24. I'll tape them tomorrow!
