  1. You're a real dedicated collector, eh? I have the CD twofer reissue of the album with Selim - nice, but I like the Village Caller with its steady medium burn even better. Lytle is one underrated vibist - just because he was in no way avant-garde. Very entertaining without getting bland.
  2. I think the appearance of this LoneHill CD ends all speculation about a possible reissue of the "Best from the West" 10 inchers as a Connoisseur CD:
  3. ... and let's not forget his contribution to these two classics:
  4. I will call them tomorrow to reserve it. The CD reissue I saw was on the Spanish Vampi Soul label. Dusty Groove has a number of rare Sabu albums: click here.

    aFRO JAWS

AFAIK Eddie Davis did not record another album with a bigger band and Latin percussion, but Oliver Nelson's "Afro-American Sketches" on Prestige/OJC could be in the same vein.
  6. I don't know any Latin or African rhythm of that name - I saw that CD last week in a shop, will be there again Monday and have a look and/or buy it - di you recommend it? Would you describe, please?

  8. ..... no, but you can view a complete list of their releases at http://www.buyrunt.com/catalog.html - scroll down the page.
  9. I suspect that was Hal Wilner's "Amarcord Nino Rota"? Very very nice lessons in jazz/soul crossover - Booker T. playing Willow Weep for Me just like Gene Harris (Dan, I apologize for the comparison ...) !!!
  10. IIRC he wanted to make a statement for women in jazz - I saw that n+band with Rosnes, Cuenca and Kim Clarke on bass - excellent players all.
  11. I stumbled across that Fantasy LP 8374 too, but have it identified as Greatest Hits Vol. 2 - one source had the Latin For Dancers title, though.
  12. Two independent sellers with the exact album title and that number - if it was only one, I'd believe your theory it never came out, but two ... I rule out typos - there was a Tjader Fantasy 8079, but that was a different album I have identified with all tracks.
  13. OTOH there are two copies for sale at GEMM.com with that title and number ... if I only could afford them tight now.
  14. It was listed along side other releases on the back of some Tjader LP ... What confuses me is the "stereo only" remark - at that time they usually had mono releases as well.
  15. Have any of you registered at the Cal Tjader Forum on http://www.caltjader.com? Mostly fans there, less the specialists, but it deserves to be kept alive!
  16. Since it was mentioned above - I saw the Machito Orchestra in the early 1980's, a years or two before his death, no 'bones, but 4 trumpets including the grteat Chocolate Armenteros and five great saxists, all getting their turn during an endless descarga tune - including Leslie Johnakins, who had been in the band in 1948! Great! Impressed me more than the big jazz bands I saw.
  17. Does anybody have this album or know about its details? Tracks, personnel etc.? Thanks! It's the first of Tjader's Fantasy LPs issued as a stereo only - may this be a compilation?
  18. "Jazzworkshop" BTW refers to a concert series they still have running, usually combining one or more guest soloists with their NDR big band or local musicians.
  19. NDR is the abbreviation for Nord-Deutscher Rundfunk - North German Radio - German broadcast stations issued their own albums, but not on a regular basis. They all had their dance orchestras with jazz leanings giving many an expatriate a regular income - e.g. Herb Geller was NDR's star soloist for many years. Expect a mainstream bigband recording with Woods as a guest soloist.
  20. BTW - comments like this are better posted in a thread specifically dedicated to the artist in question, in this case Cal Tjader Corner, too keep things concise.
  21. Drug induced? I play timbales myself, and think you have to be stone sober to be that much in control. Any trace of "Manteca" in your brain will impair your manual skills and slow you down. He was inspired, for sure - Bobo ranks above Tito Puente IMHO. Spinning this right now, an excellent album - even my OJC LP copy was pressed on red vinyl! Except for "Rezo" all tracks of this LP are inluded on Fantasy FCD-24771-2 Cal Tjader - Our Blues - since "Cuban Fantasy" is the only track with congas on the CD, it is a perfect introduction to Tjader as a jazz player. Both "Rezo" and "Cuban Fantasy" were also included on Fantasy LP 8079 Latino! which is on Fantasy FCD-24732-2 Cal Tjader - Latino ! together with Fantasy LP 8053 Demasiado Caliente.
  22. Thankx!
  23. Same here.
  24. A friend of mine inquired about some US recorded sessions (Bennie Maupin, Julian Priester) and got the answer that the tapes had detoriated. But to me it rather seems to be a question of sales potential - see the ones issued in Europe only. There were others reissued only in Japan - like the Stanley Cowell, which I would really like to have on CD.
  25. I used to collect many things: Jazz LPs Jazz CDs Science Fiction and Phantastic Fiction books Hand Drums but I stopped the completist aspect of it entirely - too frustrating, too expensive. One day I sold the Science Fiction etc. books. Right now I try to complete my collection only of a few musicians/authors/film directors that I really love: Melvin Rhyne Lucky Thompson Cal Tjader Walerian Borowczyk Julien Gracq It's all a question of funding, in the end ... The next thing I will complete is the complete Babylon 5 TV series on DVD, available at budget price at some retailer here. One box a month ...
