Have to add this which I got only now, but which is great!

I wonder why the same discography lists the other, earlier session on the original Bethlehem as just by "Winners' Circle". Of course there is a connection to the other Pettiford Orchestra sessions and the Mat Mathews sessions with Pettiford, but still - I wonder who thought this up. Not that it is really important. has anyone here Coover Gazdar's Pettiford disco to lokk this up?

The Verve Elite CD adds four tracks from the MGM Cats v. Chicks LP.

Al, still cuddling under the Xmas tree? We won't accept the answers later than January 31st ......

I have wish lists at Amazon and JPC, but always end up buying other items I also have a wish list on my harddisk. Same here. I just resisted ordering something. I bought way too much last year, gotta change that. Seriously. Need my money for other projects.

interesting/significant "expanded" CD reissues????
mikeweil replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
One I would like to hear is an expanded edition of Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi - there must be plenty material in the vault. Ostinato was edited form a half-hour version, IIRC. -

I love the James Brown Apollo Volume II (1967) Deluxe Edition very much - I had to get used to it as I knew the LP version in and out but was glad to hear that concert without those many audible edits. That was one I had hoped they would do, and I was not disappointed. Agree about the jamming quality of the Blind Faith. Will have to check out the Marvin Gaye. Aren't the Impulse Coltranes nice jobs? -
Thanks for the kind words. Keeping the Test Master list updated is no problem for me, given I'm as curious as hell about the proceedings. I have to admit it is my primary source of reference. But I also copy the answers to my hard disc and store a printout along with the CDs. Some standard format for the info would be nice, but I think this is asking too much, considering how much work it is to compile, burn and ship ... One thread with all the answers would be quite long and clumsy, and would have to edit out the personal comments, which are a very inspiring read.

Couldn't disagree more. Hank fits in perfectly there with the mood of this album. But to each his own. We've disagreed more and I expect we'll do it again. No problem, just a matter of taste. I remember when I bought my first Japanese CD of IWTHYH I was somewhat disappointed - I never liked Green or Mobley that muhc with pop tunes or bossa novas. Of all Young/Green led albums, I like those led by Young much better, on an average. By no means I want to put this album down - I like it. I just like the others better. And of course I don't expect fireworks all the time.

I think I read that the master tapes are in terrible shape. Too bad. These are two of my favorite records. Yes, I heard about that. Too bad ...

This cover reproduction is a little more focussed:

I always cherished Evans' two Pacific Jazz albums, and they sure deserve a sonic upgrade, SACD preferrably - and they would eaily fit on one disc.

Thanks for asking: I also wish there were further issues by either Lucky Thompson or Gerald Wilson real soon ! But: Lucky T. only has two more sessions (under his name) from 1949/50 before going into "the LP era". And only about 16 tracks from Gerald W. are left to be issued from 78's. There are plans "in the pipeline" for further CDs by Thompson and Wilson - but don't ask me when they are issued: But they will be !!! I'd gladly take a Wilson CD with only 16 tracks! And there should be some small group Thompson recordings with obscure leaders to fill the CD, e.g. the Lyle Griffin sessions from 1946, or sessions where Lucky lead the instrumental group behind a singer, e.g. Danny "Boy" Cobb (1950). But anything you will do is welcome to me. regarding the "other" labels - I was referring less to Neatwork, which concentrates on the alternates the Classics leave off, but any British or Spanish label that happens to reissue the same artists at around the same time. But I guess they all follow their own paths, so don't bother to answer. When in doubt, buy the Classics reissues, is my philosophy. Great work, and nice liners, BTW!

I hate it when it turns out I cannot fulfil a promise - but sorry, I won't be able to take up work on the grand list for the next few months - the band I play in just got the okay to record the next CD, with only three months to get it done, and we are in the planning stages for our own label and web distributions for future and other people's albums at the same time, not to mention all the other work. I apologize - I will post here as soon as I will have more time for such things.

It's a very nice album, but of all the Young/Green collaborations, it is at the bottom of my list. As much as I love Mobley, I think he is not the ideal saxist for them. Mellow, but a little sleepy compared to the fireworks of the others. Well, forget what I just said - get the Mosaic, and be happy ...

Of course AT had chops, but wasn't nearly as variable in his soloing as Philly Joe or Cobb - AT's solos are more or less a series of technical phrases. He was more assured of the technical side of drumming than Cobb, but I miss the springy light beat that Cobb had, and the elegance, together with the drive. Just a matter of taste, of course. I generally prefer drummers who try something else than just aligning drumtechnical patterns. The Monk album king ubu mentioned, BTW, is my favourite AT - I like him best with Monk.

Okay, Dana: Let 'em roll!

Triple welcome would be alright with me! Great to have you on the board! May I ask if further volumes of Gerald Wilson and Lucky Thompson are planned? And is there any coordination with other series on other labels? Or do you simply avoid overlaps?

The best way would be sorting after label and number, but then you need a database with an artist index. I consider that, but only when I find the time to type it all down. Right now my jazz is alphabetical after leader's or group name, with anthologies at the end. Brazilian, Cuban, other Latin, Blues, Soul & Funk, US or GB Pop, German CDs are in separate departments. My calssical CDs are sorted chronologically after composer's year of birth, with mixed programs slided in at the appropriate time periods. As there are many of the latter, a database would be great ....

Maybe he was a bit cheaper to hire than Philly Joe .... But seriously, besides that I like Philly Joe or Cobb a little more, he must have carried a few substance-related problems with him - which was one of the main reason he went to Europe, IIRC - and had two characteristics in his playing rthat may have caused opposition: - he was very heavy on the sock cymbal (Miles sure didn't like this) - he rushed the time while soloing. Has anybody read his collection of interviews, Notes and Tones? Very interesting read - but it shows a little that there must have been some tension in his relationship to the US scene.

... and this was another interesting sentence: No wonder these things don't sell, if one has to face problems in getting adequate playback equipment. But basically this is not new, we were complaining about crappy musicassette sound back then, and it nevertheless became a dominant medium in large parts of the world. Same now with MP3 - most people care less for detailed sound. Consider the trashy playback equipment most people have ... compared to this suuround sounds like heaven.

Bruyninckx lists them the same way, including the double entry - seems to be one more case where Lord copied from him.
