  1. Had another one this weekeend.
  2. from this box set:
  3. "What is this thing called jazz, this funny thing called jazz" 😉
  4. I think the problem lies in the categories and how we define them. With Basie, it's jazz. With a different rhythm section, probably not. I could care less about these categories. It's a nice track, that's good enough for me. I bet there are jazz instrumentalists that do noz "swing" in your ears, but are taken as jazz musicians. Coltrane didn't swing, in a strict sense, in his later years. 👍
  5. .... plus the capability to improvise, ranging from melodic variations of the given material to scatting in a horn-like fashion.
  6. Now that's a very nice one!
  7. Soundwise, excellent. Audiophiles raved about it back then. A 45 rpm LP, direct-to-disc. Tjader's quintet of the time expanded with horns and extra percussion. Used copies are not that expensive. It was on CD on the Laserligt label with two extra tracks that had only Gary Foster's flute - these are on the new CD reissue due in May, but I have no idea what source material they used.
  8. Burt Goldblatt is credited in small print just above the Savoy label name.
  9. Can you please edit the thread title? It's Tjader not Trader. Tjader never played with the Lionel Hampton band, btw, he just met him as a boy. That is a mistake in the promo text.
  10. Can you please post a link to the source of your information? I have the original Crystal Clear release with four tracks, a direct cut 45 rpm LP. The two additional tracks were first issued on a Laserlight CD. I wonder what their source tapes are.
  11. In BRIAN you can specify as many leaders as you want in a session, or noone, as in the case of all star sessions.
