  1. Where have people found their copies of Jazz Times in which Lou's BF test is published. I was at the interview in Portland, where Lou made these comments and would love to buy a copy of this issue of Jazz Times. However, all the usual suspects here do not carry Jazz Times since it stopped publishing for a period of time. Can't be found at Borders, Powells. Barnes and Noble. Any leads to buy this issue only (JT website ofers only subscriptions) in Portland or online? Or can the interview itself be found online? Thanks!
  2. HI, DAVID! If still available-I'll take these 2 Eric Alexander Cds: "Man with a Horn"- Alpha (Japan) promo-$10 "New York Calling"- $7.00 Thanks, Jeff PS-Was happy to see you at Yoshi's (San Francisco) last year for the Freddie Hubbard birthday celebration Not a dry eye in the house when the audience sang "Happy Birthday" to Freddie-but so sad that he could barely play that night... Send me info on payment amount with shipping
  3. FOR ANYONE INTERESTED; I have a mint copy of Discs 3-4 of this set that I will trade for a 2 CD Mosaic partial or an extra Select that someone might have. Discs 3-4 feature: Joe Thomas, Harry Carney, Dicky Wells, Sandy Williams, 2 sessions of Buck Clayton, Trummy Young, Billy Kyle, and Russell Procope. Would be a good way to get a taste of this set.... PM me if you are interested with a trade proposal. Jeff
  4. PM sent about a possible trade.... Jeff
  5. My favorite living piano player-and such a sweet, self effacing, kind man in person! HAPPY B-DAY HANK-AND MANY MORE TO COME!
  6. I've given up finding a Buck Clayton Mosaic box and booklet for the Clayton complete Mosaic CD set I found at Amoeba in San Francisco last year-as Mosaic has no booklets nor boxes left as this set sold out long ago. They also have no blank boxes for sale. Does anyone know of a company that sells blank CD (black) boxes of the same size or closely similar in which to store my CD set? I've found nothing out there yet. Has anyone had any luck with finding boxes to fit their sets bought at stores after the Mosaic sets have gone OOP? I got such a good price on the CDs that I could not pass up buying this superb set. The set still sits in the Amoeba bag waiting for a box (with plastic holder) to hold the 3 CD jewel cases. I don't want to store this set with my other single CDs....
  7. Anybody heard/purchased the new Neil Young retrospective-Archives , Vol. 1 It covers only the beginning of his career from (I think) 1966 to 1972. There will be several more volumes. The Blu-Ray version (10 discs!) has lots of extras-unreleased tracks, video, book, poster, etc. Only problem is that it's $239 on Amazon-maybe more elsewhere-OUCH At $100-125 might be worth considering but in this economy, wonder how many they will sell. It is issued on Reprise. Opinions?
  8. So glad that you are continuing to bring us more unreleased Art Pepper material, Laurie! Just wish that other estates of our fallen heroes would explore whether their musicians have unreleased material that we could experience-it would be such a treat for those of us to expand our collections-and bring in some $ to those who could surely use any profits. I remember happily reading that Blue Mitchell's widow (hopefully still alive?) received some royalty money when some of Blue's Blue Note material was used commercially... Keep on keeping on, Laurie! -Jeff
  9. Anybody purchase the DVD on Jack Sheldon's life-"Trying to Get Good"? Extra features? Opinions? Jack can be a riot in person with great stories about Chet Baker.... Director's website has the DVD for $22.05 plus $5 shipping. http://www.tryingtogetgood.com/v2/
  10. Thanks, Marty! Great to hear from you! Found this CD today on Amazon for $5 plus shipping!
  11. Da' Bastards at Dusty have Dexter Gordon's "A Day in Copenhagen" on MPS. Here is their write-up: Unlike many other American expatriates living in Europe, tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon always managed to play and record with the top musicians while overseas. This excellent sextet session (with trombonist Slide Hampton, trumpeter Dizzy Reece, pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Niels Pedersen and drummer Art Taylor) finds him exploring three Slide Hampton compositions and a trio of standard ballads. The other soloists are fine but Gordon easily dominates the set, playing his brand of hard-driving bop. With this line-up hard to go wrong? Anyone have/ highly recommend this one? Intrigued about Hampton and Reece's contribution.... or is it mainly Dex as described? -Jeff
  12. Can anyone comment on how Horace is doing these days? I've heard various unconfirmed rumors that he is in poor health I sincerely hope that these rumors are not true-and that although he appears not to be performing anymore, then at least he is in good health? We're down to so few of the 50s BN artists, that it would be great to just hear that one is simply retired....
  13. the Basie Decca was at one time $11.97-so when they had free shipping promotions, it was a steal. Hope all is well with you in Chicago, EJP
  14. I rejoined yourmusic today since BMG is shutting down at end of the month. Had received an e-mail from yourmusic offering a free CD to those (re)joining. When I signed up today, after getting my credit card number and rejoining me, there was no mention of a free CD :bwallace2: I have sent an e-mail to Customer Service-we'll see what they do. BMG had advertised upcoming RVG of at least Leo Parker (Rollin with Leo) and a Turrentine for which I forgot title-but no mention of these 2 RVG on yourmusic site. I think I'll limit my purchases to one per month-since multi-sets are not a great bargain at $7 per CD... Added a Basie Verve and Bud Powell's Blues in the Closet to my Queue...
  15. PM just sent on the Eddie Davis-Jaws Strikes Again and the Wild Bill Davis-Live in Chateaneuf. Thanks, Jeff
  16. I was a member of both BMG and YourMusic.com for quite awhile but cancelled Yourmusic because the prices-especially on Boxed sets- were so much a better deal on BMG. But with BMG cancelling their program in 2 weeks, I thought about re-joining Your Music. Has anything changed on Yourmusic in the last few years since I cancelled my membership? I figured I'd join since you cannot find RVGs for $6.99 delivered anywhere else..... Any unhappy experiences with YourMusic? I don't know of any other clubs with better deals? Are there any? -Jeff
  17. Saw online on the West Coast jazz list serv that Dave Burns, the great trumpeter passed away on April 5th. I sure did love his Vanguard label early 60s LPs. Never did get his due. Dave spent the later part of his life as a music educator. He will be missed....
  18. Wih Dusty Groove no longer carrying Fresh Sound or Lone Hill, what is best price source for these labels? I'd like to get the Candoli CD!
  19. I'd throw out my bed and sleep on the floor-to save space-before I would flatten and throw out a Mosaic box because of space issues. Without the box, your Mosaic collection would just look like loose CDs.... Incredible..
  20. One bump up...
  21. A happy find in San Francisco... I'm down in the Bay Area for my mom's birthday and of course had to visit the San Francisco Amoeba. Looking thru the CD bins, I was shocked to find the Buck Clayton Mosaic CDs (3 double jewel cases). The price was quite reasonable and when I inspected the CDs, they looked legit and fine! So, it was a no-brainer to buy the set, knowing that finding the booklet and box was a long shot at best. First thing this morning, Mosaic got a call from me. It didn't take 30 seconds to find out that that they had not (for years) had any boxes or booklets for this great set-at least they didn't laugh at my request... My second dream was to post here and by some miracle have someone on the Board have an extra (yeah, right.. ) Clayton box and/or booklet! So hold back your laughter and tell me in a nice way to delete this post/go away... At least I have this sweet music-it has always been on my radar screen. I also know (and have) that the 3 CD Proper set has most of the Mosaic material.... But at just a little over $50 it was impossible to walk away from the Mosaic discs. Ok, let the ribbing begin...(It only takes one kind soul.. -Jeff
  22. not much available online-e-bay, Amazon, half.com, etc. One copy CD@$68 I've heard little mention of this session on our Board-sidemen above certainly are impressive....
  23. In Ashley Kahn's book on Impulse Records, there is a 2 page mention of Curtis Fuller's "Cabin in the Sky" LP-apparently there was a major cost over run due to the String section session fees and Fuller was dropped from the Impulse roster soon after the LPs issue I'm sure some of our Board members have the LP? Impressions? Was the LP ever re-issued on CD?
  24. This is a GREAT CD-took awhile for me to find it but well worth the search. Try Import CDs.com
  25. The Thelonious brew may not be special but the Sweatshirt they sell with the Cool Monk painting sure is. They may sell it online as well. Picked mine up a few years ago at the Monterey Jazz Fest.
