  2. Happy Birthday, Pete! We go back to trading on the Jazz Trading Post run by Jim S.
  3. I believe it was recorded in Feb. 2010- 2 mos before Hank Passed away.. Hank died 1 year ago this week- May 16th.... Thank goodness we still have Gerald Wilson at or near age 92- Gerald's new CD a tribute to Chicago will be released next month...
  4. I have been waiting anxiously for the follow-up to Hank and Charlie's duo recording-"Steal Away". It was recorded just a few mos before Hank passed away last Spring. I wrote to Jean Pierre Leduc, Hank's former publicist/manager. He informed me that Universal Music/Jazz France has plans to release the CD "Come Sunday" sometime this Fall. I can hardly wait as I so much enjoyed "Steal Away." It was Hank's final recording. I so much miss Mr. Jones' presence on the scene. One of the sweetest classiest men you could ever have met...
  5. Anyone seen an available copy-new or preferably used- of Phil Woods 2009 CD issue of "Ballads and Blues"? It is a Japanese import-probably from Venus Records. Found one copy at over $32- a little rich for my blood...
  6. NO interest from West coasters for this Festival with nice big band line-up? Nice opportunity to see Guido Basso, Dusko Goykovich, Valery Ponamarev, and Lew and Toshiko Big Bands among many others? Was hoping to find someone to share accomodations for Fri-and Sat night-hotel has good rates. You can also buy individual tix for concerts without buying the whole weekend package. Check pdf I posted. I would plan on arriving Friday and leaving Sunday night so only 2 nights lodging needed? PM if you want more info.
  7. Here is a pdf of the line-up: http://www.lajazzinstitute.org/images/e1.pdf Looks promising to me. Big bands of Toshiko and Lew, Bill Holman, Dusko Goykovich, Valery Ponamarev, and many more... Anyone interested in going? At the LAX Marriott Hotel. Send me a PM if you want to discuss. I have been to many of the LAJI weekends- non-stop music, films, and panel discussions... (this may have been posted before-I am just trying to gauge interest from West Coasters...)
  8. The new Joe Magnarelli + Strings, "My Old Flame" is great.... With Dick Oatts, Peter Bernstein....
  9. I'm tempted to go.. Most of the band members will be LA guys.. But would be great to see Dusko, Basso, and Ponamarev tribute to Blakey....
  10. Glad they caught it early, Dana! Hang in there....
  11. I might show up and see you there...
  12. Very moving... service to others is what it is all about...
  13. Saw this listing on e-bay today. do not know the seller but has Good feedback. $150 not a bad price for this long OOP set- usually goes for much more! Here is link: http://cgi.ebay.com/Complete-Johnny-Hodges-Sessions-1951-55-Mosaic-5-LP-/300498104422?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item45f7153066 Could make a cyber Monday buyer happy...
  14. Damn tricky to follow-I ALREADY have "Dedication" and "Minor Mishap" Never thought to have checked under Pearson or the Hubbard Black Lion. Maybe most everything of Freddie's is out already from that period?? You guys saved me $- Thanks!
  15. Saw this on Amazon and elsewhere- 1961 session with Pepper Adams and Duke Pearson-complete with several alt takes. Anyone have/heard this one? Appears prime period for Freddie? Worth picking up? Comments...
  16. SO happy about my Giants-tho I was born in San Fran, I have lived in Portland the last 25+ years. I have followed the Giants all my life-and had doubts that they would ever win the Series. Heart broken in 62 and when they lost to the Angels after being up 3-2. 'Cept for the pitching staff-and what a staff- no real hitting stars but they had real spirit and such a joy/ but the torture moniker was true as they suffered thru so many one run games. Now that they won a series-1st since 54- us Giant fans can relax and focus on the Worriors. They last won when I met my wife- 1975...
  17. I rented a car last weekend that had Sirius radio. I found a station-I think it was called Real Jazz-but it might have had another name. I think it was station #72? Anyway, I was very impressed with the playlist and sound quality. How many non-smooth jazz stations are on Sirius? Worth purchasing the service? I would have to have the portable radio with docking station as I do not intend to replace my car stereo. I did notice the station cutting out whenever I went under an overpass or entered a tunnel. How is the reception at home? Opinions appreciated. The monthly fees I have seen quoted seem quite cheap at under $10 a month.
  18. Bump Was hopeful that someone from the site might be going to share some of the concerts with... Decent line-up this year.
  19. Michael: I was able to catch some of your set-split between Bobby Watson and Horizon-you were each on at same time. What I heard-and the interplay between Brecker and Escoffery(?) was great as well as your playing. It was a great Festival-thank God they have a great endowment to keep the Festival going...
