Are there any box bargains currently available?
jazzkrow replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
What do you guys think of this offer? Cheap enough to keep in your car-though most of us have this material. Amazon has other sellers offering at under $10. Supposedly passable sound-but at this price who can quibble. Amazon has a grey market import box of Miles Davis called Twenty Classic Albums for $18.98 (under $10 now...). It also has: Sonny Rollins - Eight Classic Albums - $13.40 Jimmy Smith - Eight Classic Albums - $13.52 Hank Mobley - Eight Classic Albums - $8.01 Lou Donaldson - Eight Classic Albums - $8.07 Kenny Dorham - Eight Classic Albums - $7.28 Cannonball Adderley - Eight Classic Albums - $8.13 Red Garland - Eight Classic Albums - $7.34 Thelonious Monk - Eight Classic Albums - $7.64 John Coltrane - Eight Classic Albums - $7.26 Charles Mingus - Eight Classic Albums - $8.17 -

Thanks, David! Blue Mitchell's music has meant so much to me. My first Mosaic as well. Is there any unreleased Mitchell material out there that you are aware of-especially pre- 1971? Is Blue's widow still alive? Would love to send her a note telling her how much I loved his playing. Wonder if he had any children and if they are musicians as well... Thanks!

I believe it was recorded in Feb. 2010- 2 mos before Hank Passed away.. Hank died 1 year ago this week- May 16th.... Thank goodness we still have Gerald Wilson at or near age 92- Gerald's new CD a tribute to Chicago will be released next month...

I have been waiting anxiously for the follow-up to Hank and Charlie's duo recording-"Steal Away". It was recorded just a few mos before Hank passed away last Spring. I wrote to Jean Pierre Leduc, Hank's former publicist/manager. He informed me that Universal Music/Jazz France has plans to release the CD "Come Sunday" sometime this Fall. I can hardly wait as I so much enjoyed "Steal Away." It was Hank's final recording. I so much miss Mr. Jones' presence on the scene. One of the sweetest classiest men you could ever have met...

Anyone seen an available copy-new or preferably used- of Phil Woods 2009 CD issue of "Ballads and Blues"? It is a Japanese import-probably from Venus Records. Found one copy at over $32- a little rich for my blood...

Los Angeles Jazz Institute Big Band Weekend
jazzkrow replied to jazzkrow's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
NO interest from West coasters for this Festival with nice big band line-up? Nice opportunity to see Guido Basso, Dusko Goykovich, Valery Ponamarev, and Lew and Toshiko Big Bands among many others? Was hoping to find someone to share accomodations for Fri-and Sat night-hotel has good rates. You can also buy individual tix for concerts without buying the whole weekend package. Check pdf I posted. I would plan on arriving Friday and leaving Sunday night so only 2 nights lodging needed? PM if you want more info. -
PM sent on the Basie Roulette Studio set
-
Here is a pdf of the line-up: http://www.lajazzinstitute.org/images/e1.pdf Looks promising to me. Big bands of Toshiko and Lew, Bill Holman, Dusko Goykovich, Valery Ponamarev, and many more... Anyone interested in going? At the LAX Marriott Hotel. Send me a PM if you want to discuss. I have been to many of the LAJI weekends- non-stop music, films, and panel discussions... (this may have been posted before-I am just trying to gauge interest from West Coasters...)

I'm tempted to go.. Most of the band members will be LA guys.. But would be great to see Dusko, Basso, and Ponamarev tribute to Blakey....

Glad they caught it early, Dana! Hang in there....
