I've seen a used copy of Jarrett's Japan tour solo concerts box set for $50 used. Wondering if anyone has this set and can make some comments. I have the Koln concert LPs. Liked some of the directions Keith took-but his audible grunting onstage can wreck the mood he sets. Do the Sun Bear concerts feature more of the same? Imagine the six CDs are best heard a little at a time to fully digest/appreciate? Most interested in opinions of casual Jarrett fans rather than the hard core as for them I'd imagine this is a must purchase? Thanks!

Who's getting a Mosaic gift card under their tree?
jazzkrow replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
My dirt poor son-unemployed-gave me a $20 Mosaic gift certificate. Nice gesture. Dad will need to add some serious bucks. Any newer Mosaic single to recommend if I keep a low budget? Or a newer Select? Merry Christmas, all.... -
Anyone own this 4 DVD-Rom set? Received mine last night and still figuring out how to download all 4 DVd ROM to my hard drive-so I do not have to add a disc each time I want to look up an article. Instructions said can be done from Main menu. (However, main menu does not show anywhere) Wrote to Bondi for help-but thought one of our group has solved this problem?

Don't know if One for All has been covered much here before-but I sure feel that they come closest to Blakey's classic Jazz Messenger's line-ups as being the closest (and maybe only) band of the new millenium to consistently put out great hard bop over an extended period of time. And what a line-up-Rotondi, Alexander, Steve Davis, Hazeltine, Farnsworth, Webber Each has their own projects-sure wish they would occasionally leave the East Coast and tour. Any other One for All fans out there....?

ALL sold discs have been mailed. I'd be open to a trade for a 3 CD Mosaic Select for my partial 4 disc Classic Capitol Sessions (IX-XII)-No booklet Or another small box set of similar value. Thanks!

L/F: Michel Petrucciani Box sets
jazzkrow replied to jazzkrow's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Thanks! The Owl with Konitz is the only Petrucciani one I already own. Wise advice you gave. Just curious which period-Blue Note vs. Dreyfus that most people seem to prefer. I'm sure it's just a matter of taste unless there is a more universal opinion. I saw that Dreyfus is putting out a 5 disc box next month. should wait for that one to decide..... -
I've been thinking of purchasing a Petrucciani box set to fill in my lack of his music. I've seen the Dreyfus set around at over $100 and the Blue Note box for much less. Of course, the Dreyfus set is much larger and includes DVDs. Anyone have these, and can recommend something, with a online site with decent prices? The Dreyfus set may be overkill as it covers 10+ CDs. Suggestions?

Dropped Cindy a line Her response: Dear Jeff, Thank you for your email! I appreciate your kind words and continued support. It was an honor and my pleasure to have been able to help you. Yes, I will have to read the posts on Organissimo. I Wish You All of the VERY Best! Cindy (A very classy lady-wish customer service was half as good elsewhere!)

Anyone attending this weekend's Monterey Jazz Festival?
jazzkrow replied to jazzkrow's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Can't believe that no one else is going to the Monterey Jazz Fest. I leave Friday AM for flight to San Jose and then drive to Monterey. Can help drive someone from San Jose. Coming back on Monday. Grounds shows look better than Arena shows.... -
Any Board members attending this weekend's Monterey Jazz Festival? Send me a PM and maybe we can meet somewhere on the Festival grounds. I will be flying in to San Jose and then renting a car to drive to Monterey. Featured acts are Conrad Herwig's Latin Side All-star Band w/ Randy Brecker and Joe Lovano, Hank Jones and Joe Lovano Quartet, Lincoln Center Orchestra (with you know who), Jason Moran, Brubeck Quartet, Corea, Clarke, and White. Grounds artists (more interesting to me): Toshiko and Lew Tabackin, Vijay Iyer, Jonathan Batiste, John Patitucci Trio, Rodriguez Bros., New Orleans All-Stars with Cyril Neville and Henry Butler, Ambrose Akinmusire, several great panel discussions, and on Sat. afternoon, Pete Seeger added to the usual blues only shows. They have set strict restrictions on photographers this year-NO photos anywhere in front of stage....

Marsalone: I found Lou to be in good spirits and delighting in "shocking" people with his opinions. The audience reacted with surprise, good humor, and frequent applause. His references to Wynton brought approval. Questions were allowed at the conclusion of the Bindfold Test and no one took Lou on-he honestly answered all comers-and added more zingers-about Coltrane, avant jazz, and the present state of jazz in our tough economy. Lou, appears at his age, to feel he can say what he wants-and some of his comments were off the cuff and maybe to elicit some banter back from the interviewer, who was never non plussed. There were some oddball questions from the audience at the Performing Arts Center-the crowd was remakably small for this free event. Lou is locked into his shtick, song list, etc. I have seen him 3 times and his set list seldom varies as do his stories-"I don't play any Kenny G, no Najee, no fusion, no confusion..."-but when he plays his tone is so sweet, bluesy, that all is forgiven. Having said that, I had not seen Lou live till around 5 years ago and I was so elated to see him then as one of the last old BN men, that I was enraptured. However, now that I have seen virtually the same set several times, I would not be in a hurry to see him again unless he was playing with someone special whom I had not seen before, which is unlikely Having paid his dues for over 50 years, Lou has the right to his opinions-he is so locked into the blues and feeling that if a jazz saxist cannot convey blues feeling that they cannot play jazz in his opinion. He is like your ornery uncle that you love but shake your head in disbelief on the comments that come out of his mouth. Both Mark Sheldon and I attended the Lou conversation. Speaking for myself, I was surprised and pleased that Jazz Times published so many of his comments. I was sure that they would water down the interview so as to not offend some of the fans of the jazz artists that Lou smacked down. Kudos to them to lay out Lou's opinons for public comment. I am sure they will be inundated with letters to the editor taking on Lou. Sure way to sell future issues...
