  1. Horace Tapscott - The Call [Nimbus] waited some years to hear this.....just opened a sealed copy( Xmas present).....not disappointed
  2. It was closed on the saturday afternoon I was there in October much to my disappointment Interesting to see two new independent shops have opened in Shoreditch - one a vinyl only Sister Ray, the other a third branch of secondhand dealers Flashback Records. Obviously reflects the changing geographical focus of the younger pound
  3. Damn, cover blown.....
  4. Passport lapsed 11 years ago and no driving licence - do I officially exist?
  5. public domain minstrels.....been around a while in Europe you know
  6. Wadada Leo Smith/Jamie Saft/Joe Morris/Balazs Pandi - Red Hill [Rare Noise]
  7. "offed themselves"? not morbid but insensitive to anyone who's life's been touched by suicide I might suggest But hey, we like our lists here so....
  8. Tilbury/WLS disc arrived (great service from Treader). For those interested it comprises one Tilbury solo, three WLS solos and a half hour duet
  9. If it's a recording of that gig I can tell you it is good, very good. I was there for the first half. I had to leave because of illness so it'll be nice to have a memento of what I missed
  10. Pleased to see the Treader label reactivated. A fine source for Uk improv scene in the past recent Downtown Music Gallery update listed several new titles with their usual capitalisation ISHMAEL WADADA LEO SMITH / JOHN TILBURY - Bishopsgate Concert (Treader 21; UK) SPRING HEEL JACK With PAT THOMAS/ALEX WARD/PAUL LYTTON - Live in Antwerp (Treader 19; UK) ALAN WILKINSON/PAT THOMAS/STEVE NOBLE/JOHN COXON - The Founder Effect I (Treader 16; UK) ALAN WILKINSON/PAT THOMAS/STEVE NOBLE/JOHN COXON - The Founder Effect II (Treader 17; UK) PAT THOMAS/STEVE NOBLE - THE BOTH - The Founder Effect III (Treader 18; UK) I ordered direct from Treader through their non -dormant but not updated website http://treader.org/
  11. James Blackshaw - Apologia [bladud Flies] Another one bought yesterday , an excellent session. Sounds like a good Record Fair. I must travel north.....
  12. Art Ensemble of Chicago - People in Sorrow [Nessa] Famoudou Don Moye - Sun Percussion, volume 1 [AECO Records] Joseph Jarman - Sunbound [AECO Records] the Moye really warmed the cold winter air this afternoon. If only there'd been a volume 2
  13. If the Matisse show is the one that was at Tate Modern earlier this year (as I suspect) then do try and see it - it is sensational. Busy? absolutely. But well worth some artistic jostling
  14. Stu Martin/John Surman - Live at Woodstock Town Hall [Dawn]
  15. So why don't I own it? Something to remedy in 2015
  16. Sheffield steel
  17. I share your liking for them. My favourite (from the 90s, I think) is 'The Road to St. Ives'. I suspect part of the issue is that Surman seemed to be (at one stage) deep inside the world of explosive free or near free improvisation. But there are other sides to his musical personality that come out in the solo/duo/choral/strings albums that don't seem to chime with what is considered 'edgy'. Essential to understanding Surman, I think. All I hear as personal statements, some with strong connections to his heritage - the aforementioned 'Road to St Ives' and 'Diary of Rev. Absalom Dawe'. I've always heard his more out there recordings (which i love) as the diversion if there is one and the solo/duo/choral/strings to be the thread that runs through
  18. Thanks to both of our NYC correspondents for bringing the news in such illuminating and enthusiastic style and reminding me to listen to Ray Anderson again (after a long hiatus) Just playing the marvellous Barry Altschul trio with RA on Moers - first time in must be 15 years
  19. Barry Altschul Trio featuring Ray Anderson and Mark Helias - Somewhere else [Moers] Inspired by Anderson talk on other threads. This is a great trio. It musy be more than fifteen years since I dug this out. Note to self - stop buying and start listening to what you've got - ha!
  20. Has this group recorded? I haven't really istened to Anderson for a while. I have a Moers and a Black Saint somewhere. This review will prompt me to dig them out edit to add; Just found their 'Sweet Chicago suite' on Spotify
  21. Louis Sclavis is a fine soprano player. Listen to 'Soul is Free' from 'Suite Africaine' [Label Bleu] for proof. He switches between soprano and clarinets through the album. Henri Texier and Aldo Romano are on board so you know it's going to be a great listen
  22. Luther Thomas Creative Ensemble - Live [Circle Records]
  23. shall we change the thread title to "list a soprano sax player" now or in a few more posts time?
