That Leo LP with Ak Laff is fabulous as is the Marion Brown but neither are on CD. The Bessie Smith tribute on Leo is on CD and well worth a listen. I'm fond of her 'Circle of Time' trio on Black Saint and 'Jumping in the Sugar Bowl' on Minor Music with Reggie Nicholson. A live trio album has its moments too Don't forget Threadgill's 'Song out of my trees' either. I'm keeping the duo with Muhal up my sleeve for later CT - I admire your restraint. I can kind of understand why but .......

I know you're not asking me but if I can push in.......I can let you know later in the week. A copy in the post as we speak....enough of it on youtube to whet the appetite. I'm on a big Amina C-M kick at the moment and that was the clincher

Nothing wrong with EW&F.....doesn't surprise me that he chose that one either

Track 2. That's not Alex Hawkins and Moholo-Moholo is it? I don't have the album but it sounds like Moholo-Moholo and the pianist isn't Irene Schweizer nor is it Marilyn Crispell I don't think, not sure there. No it's not her so I'm going with Hawkins and wondering why I never got around to seeing them live (or buying the CD) - no excuses as they've played locally several times could Track 4.be Lester Bowie? If it is I don't now which LP
-
track 8. Fritz Hauser? I don't have anything by this trio if it is he but will be looking to remedy that on the back of this track 11.Now I've got to go and listen to my Gonzalez collection - a hard job but someone's got to do it......

Braxton Iridium box set - Yes or No?
mjazzg replied to jeffcrom's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Enjoy it! Fanboy reasons can be good reasons, I find. And now I kind of regret not buying it from him a month or so ago. I didn't for the same doubts about GTM in your original post and bought the set with Fujiwara and Rainey instead. I'll make do with Spotify for a while and then one day...... let us know what you make of it? -
here's hoping you've hit the target
-
Ouch.....$110 + is the cheapest I've seen it in the last few years

In my view one of the most interesting and original artists of her generation both as a player and composer Any of her leader dates with Quintet/Septet on Firehouse 12 will give you a good idea both of her playing and writing for others. The more recent 'Reverse Blue' on Relative Pitch is a very good quartet that some people felt a little restrained and might be described as more 'accessible' than the Firehouse 12s My own entry was via Braxton - try Quintet (London) 2004 or Quartet (Moscow) 2008. Then I was bowled over by 'Dragon's Head', a guitar trio. I don't normally go for this format not being a great guitar fan but this is something else. There's a lot more and I wouldn't want to be without, her work with MAP, Laubrock's Anti-House, Thirteenth Assembly, Crackleknob or Thumbscrew but maybe they're for when you become hooked, like me. I know there are other fans on the board who will hopefully chime in soon edit to add: anyone who can play what sounded very much like rockabilly riffs whilst performing with Braxton's Diamond Wall Quartet, as she did in Bristol a month or so ago, has got to be worth listening to

John Clark - Faces [ECM] w. David Friedman, John Christensen (guaranteed satisfaction) Gallery - s/t [ECM] w.David Samuels, Michael DiPasqua, Paul McCandless, David Darling, Ratzo Harris two LP only ECMs (I'm prepared to be corrected) that have a similar soundworld my ears - an open and wide "American" sound that differs from the contemporaneous European ECM sound. Too simple to say one sounds sunny and the other more wintry but there's something in that. Both very worthwhile I find.

John Surman - Live at Moers Festival [Ring]

I enjoy that one a lot (including the freight train solo)

What live music are you going to see tonight?
mjazzg replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
MH playing "Ida Lupino". I need to hear that. Autumn's a long way off -
Ditto! Those Mike Taylor albums are worth at least $10 I hear Damn. I sold mine for $15 the two only last weekend as they were cluttering up the flat
-
Probably my all time favorite Braxton album. Mine too and arguably the best introduction to him. A shame it never had a standalone CD release. and mine. Such a great band. I also love the cover photo. meanwhile....on the player now Ray Russell - Dragon Hill [CBS Realm] with thanks to the boardees who answered my recent questions about this
-
Yes, I'd forgotten about that one, must get it out (gets shelved elsewhere because of the oversized NotTwo sleeves) I'd love to see him live
-
He's awesome, but I'm not sure the CFs are his best records. Ithink I agree. The solo on Leo's nice. The Delmark's different but a great listen too
-
I'm a fan of Stein's A Calculus of Loss. So much so that your post has prompted me to order the other one at its currently ridiculous price, thanks for the nudge

UK Jazz: why do the 1950s-70s attract more attention?
mjazzg replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Possibly prompted by this thread I've listened to some excellent Brit Jazz over the last few days. Those of more recent vintage that have stood out are Fin Peters - Butterflies [Accidental] and Music of The Mind [Mantella] Iain Ballamy - Pepper Street Interludes Anton Hunter Trio - s/t [efpi] Reuben Fowler - Between Shadows Edition] I know this doesn't add one iota to the debate. Just saying really..... -
I saw Trio Riot play about three years ago or so. http://efpirecords.com/artists/trio-riot/ They were good and Rasmussen was impressive but not overly so. I'll be interested to watch these clips to see where she's at on them
-
I think I prefer it to FSS. Mine's a Liberty again.... ' NYC Mono' envy could be a new feature of this thread
-
Now the mono which I think is packing more of a punch. Best library sale find ever - the two 'Once Upon...' and TCB all in pretty good state

The Alan Skidmore Quintet - Once Upon A Time [Deram Nova] stereo
