  1. thanks for that colinmce. Just scored a vinyl copy
  2. John Lndberg Trio - Give and Take [ Black Saint] JL w Barry Altschul and George Lewis nasty cover, great music. Lindberg with the energy and groove of his just 23 years at the time. Another piece in the ever-growing evidence pile that George Lewis is a guarantor of a quality session
  3. as the thread title says "all things...". does anyone know whether andre jaume / joe mcphee featuring raymond boni - tales and prophecies has been issued on CD?
  4. saw him do this in London recently. Astonishing evening of music, he really pushes the potential of the piano to achieve a challenging sound. Very percussive, blocks of resonating chords beautifully counterpointed by right hand subtlety. Gig kept me thinking (but not whistling any tunes) for days afterwards
  5. Leroy Jenkins - space minds, new worlds, survival of America [Tomato] new purchase, first listen, great music and what a title
  6. Shawn, try to be good to yourself, if only in the little ways and some light may emerge at the end of the tunnel. Take the time you need away from here if you wish but you'll be missed and welcomed back when you return. As others have said this board isn't about Jazz knowledge, CDs or collections (although sometimes it can seem intimidatingly so, i agree) the board is about connections - connections between folk spread throughout the globe who enjoy eachother's company. Your company has been greatly enjoyed and will continue to be. take great care and be kind to yourself
  7. thank you. Listening for the first time now. very strong. As a surman fan, it's nice to come across a session i didn't know existed
  8. Thanks, i'll see if I can make it to Flim Flam
  9. Good to hear it's the 'old' line-up as it will be interesting to hear the development from first ensemble disc. I notice Alex that you're playing soon with a quartet, Vole. Any clues as to what can we expect? Notice you're playing keyboards, not piano
  10. Charles Tolliver - recent and older, 'Impact' for maximum effect also just listening to grachan Moncur III and Jazz Composers orch. - they been namechecked yet?
  11. Grachan Moncur III & the Jazz Composers orchestra - Echoes of a Prayer [JCOA] following on from Gil Scott Heron/Brian Jackson - Winter in America [strata East]
  12. Grooves-inc has worked well for me too. Quick despatch, competitive pricing (Black saint boxes again) etc
  13. no, me neither. Heartened to see the Impressions in the chart (but can't quite spot and musical influence on the last album - 3 part harmonies on the new one, what odds?) and that Bob Stewart is an old fave of mine that I've not listened to for a while
  14. very interesting read. The comment about Threadgill "if you can't move to Threadgill, you may be clinically dead" made me laugh out loud with recognition - worthy of a T-shirt slogan I'm very keen to hear the new album and how the different instrumentation works - superficially taking it closer to some of HT's ensembles Alex, any date for release? will you be selling it direct as I've had some 'issues' with babel's online store?
  15. Just scored a near-mint Virtuosi. So, it's thanks again to fkimbrough and I'm diving head first into the pool, alocispepraluger102 to discover all these trio recordings as you suggested
  16. Congrats and best of luck. I have another CD with Joëlle Léandre and enjoyed it. I'd be interested in this, though it would help if there were short sound clips. Also, I didn't really feel like working through registration to figure out shipping costs. What will it be for shipping to the US, specifically Chicago? Thanks. Eric Shipping anywhere in the US is included in the price, $15. You can also buy it at DMG, Squidco, Jazzloft, or Discogs. Kevin Kevin, what about postage to UK, how much direct from you?
  17. A true great gone, deeply saddening. For me 'Winter in America' is right up there with 'What's going on' as a political and personal songcycle that leaps through any concept of genre. I saw him live several times and there was always those spine-tingling moments when lyrics and melodies (and what melodies) combined to maximum effect. B-Movie was the stand-out track on a cassette (remember them?) given away free with NME in early 80s - it resonated here in th UK, heaven only knows how it must have in the US - it was my entry point to such a vast trove of magic songs that seemed to nail the truth be it about human feelings or the human condition. His demons took their toll for sure but he left us with a deep well to continue to revisit RIP and thanks, Gil
  18. it's well worth the search. then there was this great bley trio album from the 70s with mark levinson(the sound guy) on bass. i wish they had recorded more. i dont recall, without looking at the recording, who was on bass on those copenhagen-haarlem sides. there is therein the most magnificent(they are all magnificent) version of mr. joy ever. it lasts a very long vinyl side, or most of it, and is musical heaven to me. I'm just starting to navigate the discography of the Bley trios in this period and it's not too simple. A number of different labels and sessions released sometime after recording - tthe situation that crreated my my initial query The double LP on Arista compiled two seperate earlier European (?) releases, I think - Touching and Blood:Paul Bley in Haarlem, on Fontana or Debut. Certainly looks like the long version of Mr Joy which is side 4 of the Arista had Levinson on bass, Discogs suggests it was recorded 1966, released later on the Arista. I think I'll just have to try and hear everything by a Paul Bley Trio from 65-70
  19. fantastic, thanks Fkimbrough. I knew someone here would know. Off to hunt Virtuosi down right now
  20. I don't know much of Krog except her work with John Surman but if off kilter's your thing you might try giving Sidsel Endresen. a listen Undertow is my personal favourite. Couple on ECM worth investigating, later ones with Bugge Wesseltoft less so IMO
  21. Finally paying attention to the 'interview' on the inside of LP Mr Joy (rec.1968), I read that 'Mr Joy' (Bley') says "I have been preparing a double ballad album consisting of four long pieces each taking up one side of an LP" Now I'm guessing two of these could be on 'Ballads' , ECM 1010- Ending (17:15) and So hard it hurts (12:12) recorded 1967, released 1971. Possibly my favourite Bley Anyone help out with whether these are two of the ballads mentioned? If so, have the other two seen light of day? I can't think of any other side-length ballad pieces from my limited knowledge of Bley recordings from this era. If these aren't two on 'Ballads' aren't those mentioned, then it's four ...
  22. all (or very nearly all) Eremite covers http://eremite.com/eremite
  23. Coin Coin arrived. Stunningly powerful album. The lineage of Roach and Shepp is apparent (to me, at least) but this is an original statement by a talented writer, arranger and player
  24. what a great line-up. Dawn of Midi and that Stanko quartet stand out from the names I kind of expected to see, but hey, I'd jump at all of them. It's about this time each year I wish i lived in NYC not this side of the pond. Enjoy y'all
  25. mea culpa. more attention will be paid. Still don't think it should be moved
