  1. The Thirteenth Assembly - Staion Direct excellent playing but particularly good writing from all four - Ho Bynum, Fujiwara, Pavone, Halvorson - some real tunes (yes, tunes) on this one. Fujiwara stands out for me - a very melodic drummer. Recommended to anyone who likes any of the players individually or anyone with ears open to some melodically infused contemporary improvising (and writing). Purchased at an excellent London gig this week
  2. Strange that this has never had a CD release. Anyone know why? 'fraid not. There seems little rhyme nor reason why a bunch of the earlier ECMs have never made it. Guess we'll have to await Mr Eicher's reply....the vinyls sound very good, mind. It is indeed a fine session
  3. I enjoyed it. But I'm no expert on these things. Heh heh. I'm just downloading it, so I'll tell you your opinion once I know what it should have been! That would be very helpful! I know that I'm not supposed to like Vandermark but am allowed to 'admire' Guy. Hey! I haven't told you what to think yet! Oh, but others have! don't listen to 'em Bev. Enjoy and admire Vandermark, he's worth it (even if the purists think otherwise). Somewhat confused though, have they rereleased Fox Fire on Impulse? What's the other album on the twofer?
  4. PM sent on Daniel Levin Quartet - Organic Modernism - (Clean Feed) 7 cello/b/tpt/vib quartet with Nate Wooley and Matt Moran Daniel Levin solo - Inner Landscape - (Clean Feed) 6 solo cello improvisations in the hope....
  5. Decoy are storming. Decoy + McPhee? Just go, it is THAT good. I was lucky enough to be at the gig that was recorded Hope to make the new Quintet gig and maybe Convergence - two nights on the trot, will be interesting Now those Oxford gigs with WLS sound very interesting indeed...space being watched very closely Enjoy the duet with Moholo-Moholo. can't wait for the recording.....
  6. Christian Wallumrod Ensemble at Kings Place. Magnificent mix of lower case improv, baroque brass chorales, norwegain folk/church music and not much jazz. Shouldn't have worked but did so to produce an absorbing and intense listening experience
  7. Jazzloft still showing in stock this morning - whether or not they have copies....
  8. to be followed by today's other new acquisition except mine's yellow text on white Nessa edit: to apologise to excessive image size on the levin!
  9. inspired by and somewhat different to the current quartet's concert on bbc iplayer at the moment.
  10. Just to echo Allen's comment - this thread is just such an entertaining and informative read - such knowledge worn so lightly and shared so informatively. I'm off to listen again to much of the music mentioned and to hunt down others that I haven't heard previously. As for the eventual project - it should be marvellous with this seedbed of ideas - can't wait
  11. Happy Birthday to you. thanks for all the inspiring 'vinyl spinning' posts. Hope there's some birthday sounds on the deck today
  12. some very good playing by younger UK band - Mark Hanslip, Matthew Bourne, James Allsopp amongst them. Interesting compositions by Riaan Vosloo. Third of a trilogy and possibly the best
  13. Cleaver is a monster, although his last solo album on FSNT left me a little cold. me too. hobbled by its ambition I thought
  14. Mine arrived in UK just 5 days after I ordered it! The Nessa elves are indeed on overtime. great music. So fresh and incisive. My first real exposure to Fred Berry - need to hear more
  15. and a great name
  16. First couple of spins to Oblique1 by Tyshawn Sorey (Pi Recordings) reveal a tight band playing some interesting music. Not many tunes leaping out yet but some interesting writing especially the slower paced elements (like Koan?) certainly Sorey's drumming and Escreet's piano is sounding strong (so much more so than on Escreet's very disappointing recent leader date). Stillman's tone still needs some getting used to, for me.
  17. I've not come across Kaplan or Blaser at all. Rather odd choices methinks, unless Werner wants to get away from strictly reissues. The Ayler is a MUST. I'm still hoping and waiting for a handful of primo Braxtons, including the Santa Cruz album. Blaser made some waves with a Clean Feed release featuring Tyshawn Sorey iirc and also had an intriguing duo disc with Pierre Favre. I, for one, am pleased to see Hat promoting some new and young talent, especially if the ever-special Mr. Ducret is involved

    Graham Collier

recently purchased Winter Oranges with The Danish radio Big Band. Great clarity in the writing and some impressive playing. Looking forward to Charles River Fragments as next purchase. there appears to me such a strong compositional voice threading through everything I've heard thus far

    Graham Collier

latest BGO reissue now available The Day of the Dead/October Ferry/Symphony of Scorpions/Forest Path to the Spring http://www.bgo-records.com/details_divs.asp?CatalogNo=BGOCD1028 The website blurb describes how Collier was involved, altering tracklisting (seems a shame that they couldn't edit the text to recognise his death). The rest of this series has been essential listening in my house Such a shame it's a posthumous release
  20. followed by two very different but very good BYGs
  21. I share your pain. what to do? Could she be the artist to make the genre-defying difference......
  22. No brainer. Unmissable ! (or you could take the Strata-East vinyl route) another vote for the Tolliver. marvellous stuff. If you're at all tempted, then jump
