  1. He was also one of my favorite members of the "Fantastic Four." Oh, wait...
  2. "She likes the free, fine, fresh, koo-koo wind in her hair..." - The Lady is a Tramp, "Sinatra and Sextet Live in Paris."
  3. I saw it the other night. There are some VERY good performances (aside from Streep and Adams, there's also Stanley Tucci as Paul Childs) and the film is a lot of fun on a number of a levels (I left the film wanting to go home and cook something complicated). On the other hand, I'm also reading the book (Julie Powell's book, not Childs' "My Life in France," on which the film is also based) and I feel that Julie Powell's story got slimmed down to a ridiculous amount. Without question, Childs' story is the more interesting, but Powell's part of the movie makes her look like nothing more than a whiny brat. While her book has a certain amount of whining, the film makes it look like she does nothing but. All of the secondary characters in her life (aside from her husband) are dropped completely (she has a brother who does quite a bit in the book). And the successful friends she lunches with in the film are complete fiction...
  4. But...but, now who will make heartwarming and yet vaguely snarky coming-of-age teen comedies? Chris Columbus is only one man! In all seriousness, I grew up on this guy's movies. "Ferris Bueller" and "The Breakfast Club" remain favorite films of that era. RIP.
  5. "Race" was the common term for black recorded music from the 20s through the 40s, at least. It certainly wasn't intended to be insulting. Rather, it was feared (on the part of the record companies) that no one would buy "Negro" or "Black" records. "Race" is just the euphemism they settled upon. Lester Melrose was, indeed, white...
  6. DAT (Digtal Audio Tape) and DCC (Digital Compact Cassettes). They both appeared around the same time as Mini-Discs and never really went anywhere (I know that DAT was used in studios for a long time, before they went totally digital. I'm talking about commercial DATs and DCCs. I remember seeing the spinner racks in Tower during the early '90s).
  7. I have it. I actually have one and a half copies of the mono "Blonde on Blonde" on vinyl. I have my dad's old copy, but sadly the first disc is missing and has never turned up. I recently bought a vinyl reissue of the mono version. Great stuff! I've heard the mono "White Album" as well (I downloaded it from Purple Chick).
  8. Very clever! The only thing it left out was the hours and hours where nothing is happening, but they still keep checking in with their correspondents: Cooper: We still have no confirmation on the landing. Let's go to our London correspondent and see what the mood is like over there. London: Anderson, the mood is wait and see over here. We haven't actually heard anything from the astronauts, so the British people don't have any reaction at this time. Cooper: There must be some anticipation. London: There is a good deal of anticipation, of something historic happening, but since we have no new information at this time, the mood is still very much wait and see. Cooper: For the Russian reaction, we go to Moscow. Moscow: We don't have any new information here, Anderson. Mr. Putin has declined to make any comment on the anticipated lunar landing. Cooper: The United States is moments away from beating the Russians to the moon. That must be galling. Moscow: It may well be, Anderson, but we don't have any confirmation from Mr. Putin's office. Cooper: We now go to Houston to see if there is any new information on the landing. Houston: There is a hush of anticipation here, Anderson. But as of yet, we have no news. We have been told that a press conference will be called the moment they have anything at all. Cooper: We have William Kristol here in the studio. Bill, how do Republicans feel at this moment? Kristol: Anderson, I have no doubt that if John McCain had been elected President, we would have gotten to the moon twice as fast. Cooper: Hold on, Bill. I'm getting something from Neverland. Apparently, there's some new information on Michael Jackson's kids...
  9. Well, he'd been hanging with Dylan around that time. The funny thing, of course, is that Dylan was "going country" (he recorded "Nashville Skyline" around that time) at the same time that Cash was "going relevant."
  10. Is such a thing possible? I sure haven't heard a bad song from Johnny...
  11. If you like Pinot have you ever tried a well made Syrah or a Rhone style wine? I have not. I will definitely keep it in mind.
  12. When I feel like spending money, I like to get a really expensive bottle of Pinot noir. The cost actually makes a difference in this case. I find the cheaper Pinot noirs tend to taste like feet, but a good bottle is fantastic. For cheap wine, my wife and I usually get Yellowtail Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvingnon. I cannot abide Merlot, which tastes way too grapey for me. Apparently Yellowtail does make a Pinot noir, but they don't carry it at my wine store...
  13. I wonder if you could modify one of these babies with a modern tonearm/stylus. The problem with the old Victrola-type machines is that they used steel needles and steel needles EAT 78s.
  14. Dear Christ, that thing is sexy!
  15. I can't believe that not one was in a Bob Marley sleeve!
  16. "One Rainy Wish" from "Axis: Bold as Love". I can't get enough of the part where he sings, "I have never laid eyes on you...Not before this time today..." It never fails to move me. "Bold As Love." "We're all...bold as love...hear me talkin' to ya..." "Fire" from "Are You Experienced?" This is not to say that I don't love tracks from "Electric Ladyland," "Band of Gypsies," "First Rays of the New Rising Sun" ("Angel" is a favorite, as is "Freedom"), etc., but these are the three that I thought of first. And the fact is that "Axis: Bold as Love" is as close as an absolutely perfect album as anybody has gotten. I love it, love it, love it!
  17. Whatever happened to the Soda Pop Board of America? What is their position on the Economic Downturn? Should we be drinking more cola?!
  18. "Digital Ash In A Digital Urn" by Bright Eyes. It looks even less like there's anything on the cover in real life (as opposed to a picture online).
  19. I have this one. It's an amazing set...
  20. I have the ones listed above and would second the recommendation, but I would recommend anything that's on Old Hat, they're an excellent label. I agree. I have all of the Old Hat releases and they are uniformly excellent. Not all of them are blues, however, which is why I didn't recommend them all in this thread.
  21. The question is: How much more black could it be? And of course, the answer is none. None more...black...
  22. Yep. Don't get it. Seems like it's reaching to get some kind of dirty double meaning out of it. It is possible for an older person to share something with a child without it being perverted!
  23. I know that people have been calling this artist "Bukka" for a long, long time, but it bothers me that people continue to do that. His given name was Booker Washington White. From what I've read, he was very specific that his name was spelled B-O-O-K-E-R. "Bukka" was a phonetic rendering of the way he pronounced his name, written down (I assume) by some record company employee who didn't understand what he was trying to say. That we still call him "Bukka" seems disrespectful somehow...
