http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/09/sports/ncaafootball/questions-linger-about-death-of-former-quarterback-cullen-finnerty.html?hp&_r=1& "BALDWIN, Mich. — The search started the night of May 26, a Sunday, when Cullen Finnerty went missing in the woods here, amid towering white pines and shrubby scrub oak trees and owls and white-tailed deer. By Monday morning, helicopters circled overhead as cadaver dogs combed through the brush below. By that Tuesday, the search party had ballooned to include 13 officers from Lake County, 22 reserve officers, almost 100 local volunteers and so many friends and family members that the assembled lost count. They fanned out in small groups, separated by 100 yards, walking the same direction, crossing square-mile sections of the Webber Township grid. Some waded through waist-high swamps. Others fought through dense foliage".

the youthful talented aaron parks is a great personal favorite------- Tune in to the Musician's Show this Wednesday, June 12 from 6-9pm as we welcome pianist Aaron Parks. Admitted to the Manhattan School of Music at age 16, Parks was already recording and touring with Terence Blanchard's band by the time of his graduation. Since then, he has played with such artists as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Joshua Redman, Matt Penman, and Eric Harland, and has celebrated his Blue Note release, Invisible Cinema. Parks has also been the recipient of several renowned jazz awards, including Third Place in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition and First Place as the Cole Porter Fellow of the American Pianists Association. To find out more about Aaron Parks, visit www.aaronparks.com. http://www.studentaffairs.columbia.edu/wkcr/story/tonight-aaron-parks-musicians-show-wednesday-may-12-6-pm

http://us6.campaign-archive1.com/?u=fbb73729de29a180019d6674c&id=67cdec4df9&e=923e8901a3 "NEW STAFF AT OTHER MINDS Other Minds would like to congratulate Operations Director Michael Straus on his new position as Assistant Dean of Technology & Facilities at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music. With his departure later this month, we are excited to announce two new employees to our staff. Operations Coordinator Andrew Weathers is a composer and improviser from North Carolina, currently based in Oakland. He is a recent graduate of Mills College where he completed his MFA in Electronic Music. He has studied with Fred Frith, Roscoe Mitchell, John Bischoff and Eugene Chadbourne, among others. Weathers' work blends experimental, folk, and punk traditions and his most recent output is Andrew Weathers Ensemble's fourth album, What Happens When We Stop. It was by chance that our new Executive Assistant Blaine Todd wandered into the cross hairs of Other Minds. Severely disoriented after attending a Cage concert at the SFMOMA, he wrote to OM and began interning last Fall 2012. Originally from San Diego, he migrated north to San Francisco where he earned a degree in English Literature at SFSU. Working outside the confines of the popular or academic mainstream, he immersed himself in the wildly unpopular undercurrent of the Bay Area’s noise, drone, and minimal experimental music scene. He currently plays as a solo musician, with Common Eider, King Eider, and John Krausbauer. " http://www.otherminds.org/

She has no laptop, speakers or need for an electrical outlet. Instead, Raley lugs two 1900s-era phonographs and a crate of vintage records to her gigs and literally cranks out the nostalgic tunes of yesteryear."

A French start-up wants to replicate this success in France, a country where tinned wine is virtually unheard-of, in a bid to "democratise the sale of quality wine".

http://www.onthecommons.org/magazine/why-i-no-longer-give-away-my-music "Jacques Sirot is an independent French artist and film-maker. He used my music as the soundtrack for one of his recent films, as I have made clear he (and everyone else) is free to do. Making sure to dot every i and cross every t, when he posted his film on YouTube he noted: This Creative Commons film uses Bob Ostertag’s music, Say No More, which is distributed with a Creative Commons license; its usage has moreover been personally agreed by the musician. Yet soon after the film was posted, it was blocked for copyright violation, with a notice that “it may have content that is owned or licensed by IODA [independent Online Distribution Alliance].” Jacques appealed: “This video contains elements protected by rights of the author in question, but with the appropriate license or written authorization of the holder of those rights. Bob Ostertag was notified of this use of his music (which he distributes via “Creative Commons”) and granted his authorization. I believe in good faith that the claims described above are not valid, and that I hold the necessary rights to the contents of my video, for reasons cited. I have not knowingly made a false declaration and am not voluntarily using this contestation procedure in an abusive manner to undermine third party rights. I understand that the forwarding of fraudulent contestations can lead to the closure of my YouTube account.”
