  1. mr. shirley had the most beautiful touch and shadings i've heard. his out of print columbia album from the 1960s "in concert" is among my most favorite recordings. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/29/arts/music/donald-shirley-pianist-and-composer-dies-at-86.html?smid=tw-nytimesobituary&seid=auto&_r=0 'Jazz piano players, Mr. Shirley told The Times in 1982, when he was appearing at the Cookery in Greenwich Village, “smoke while they’re playing, and they’ll put the glass of whisky on the piano, and then they’ll get mad when they’re not respected like Arthur Rubinstein. You don’t see Arthur Rubinstein smoking and putting a glass on the piano.” He added: “I am not an entertainer. But I’m running the risk of being considered an entertainer by going into a nightclub because that’s what they have in there. I don’t want anybody to know me well enough to slap me on the back and say, ‘Hey, baby.’ The black experience through music, with a sense of dignity, that’s all I have ever tried to do.”"
  2. batting helmets with facebars, like the lady softball pitchers occasionally use, seem to me a safer alternative. i've felt this way for years. none of us want to see a pitcher killed. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130508&content_id=46954168&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb

The purpose of making a record is to add to the literature of the music, which means you’re bringing in some elements that are not widely available, and you’re indicating to other musicians that following along the suggestions that you’re making with this recording of yours might be of some interest and it might be of some utility to somebody who is playing."

  11. http://www.pointofdeparture.org/PoD42/PoD42PageOne.html "At a time when the CD is supposedly going the way of the dodo, boxed sets are currently being issued at an arguably indigestible pace: vintage Earl Hines sessions; Vancouver’s NOW Quintet’s complete self-produced recordings from the late 1970s; a heretofore unreleased passel of Miles Davis concert recordings from 1969; a trove of New York Art Quartet tapes; a multi-angle snapshot of the Wandelweiser movement of post-Cage composers and improvisers. Close listening of the 28 discs comprising these collections (granted, the NYAQ consists of five LPs and the Davis includes a DVD) would require being cloistered for a month or more. Otherwise, under normal, distractions-filled listening conditions, nuggets like Hines’ s 1940 electric piano solos, NOW Quintet’s unexpected and jubilant reading of Karl Berger’s “Five Feelings,” and prepared pianist Philip Thomas’ pristine minute-plus reading of Cage’s 1944 “Prelude for Meditation” might well slip by." ---------------------- "That’s why, partially at least, Max Roach contended that recordings distort what jazz really is in practice, and have an inflated influence on current and future histories."

Yet you have had vast experience as a teacher. Can you share some thoughts about this experience and your own antimethod of teaching? BLEY: Musicians like to play jazz, and because of that they will improve. What they don’t like to do, and don’t know how to do, is get concerts."
