  1. thx--are there any films of mingus recording sessions? if money jungle and blue moods are examples, they must have seemed like combat zones, and the music is the richer for it.

  3. THIS ARTICLE CASTS A WHOLE DIFFERENT LIGHT ON THE MATTER. I TAKE IT AT FACE VALUE---I'M GENERALLY INDIFFERENT TO MAINSTREAMER MS. KRALL, BUT I DO LOVE OLD HEADS ON YOUNG BODIES. LINK "For the record, Diana Krall isn't wearing bordello lingerie on the cover of "Glad Rag Doll" (Verve), nor is the scanty attire a cheap trick to hawk her new album. "I was just playing dress-up to illustrate the album's title and 1920s theme," said the 47-year-old jazz-pop singer-pianist and mother of two. "There isn't even any cleavage—just a little more thigh. Look at Alfred Cheney Johnston's Ziegfeld Girls photos from the period. They're much more risqué." On "Glad Rag Doll," due Oct. 2, the breathy-voiced two-time Grammy winner covers mostly jazz and vaudeville songs written between the two world wars. But the album's bluesy, Prohibition-era theme is a risky deviation for Ms. Krall, whose fans have grown accustomed to her humid renditions of American Songbook standards backed by lush orchestrations. "I'll be back to strings—this album is just something I wanted to do in addition to that," she said. "I'm not trying to reinvent myself here. The more different creative outlets I have, the more exciting recording is for me. This is the music I was first attracted to—before Louis Armstrong and Nat Cole." Born in 1964, Ms. Krall grew up in British Columbia and today divides her time between Vancouver and New York with husband, Elvis Costello, and their children. As a preteen, Ms. Krall spent hours listening to her father's vast collection of 78-rpm records. Fascinated by the '20s and '30s, she traveled at age 16 to Williams College in Massachusetts to visit the archives of jazz-age band leader Paul Whiteman."
  4. it gets stranger and strangerer. now comes this tidbit from the sportswire---- "8:45 PM: The Associated Press reports the New York Jets brought in sleep specialists this week to help their players get more rest. Coach Rex Ryan says: "I just think it's wise to do that .... If we can gain a little advantage, then we're going to look for it.""

  6. LINK "WASHINGTON -- Today, music lovers have more ways than ever before to access their favorite songs and discover artists they've never heard of. Can't live another minute without "Call Me Maybe"? Download it on iTunes for just $1.29, or stream it over your smartphone with Spotify. Want to hear something different? Let Pandora Internet radio pick something for you, or turn to Grooveshark, a sonic Facebook, to see what other music nerds are listening to. The digital revolution that Napster heralded at the turn of the millenium finally seems to be bearing fruit. At the time, record labels decried the file-sharing program as an existential threat to the industry. To protect record sales, they sued everyone from tech startups to children, and lobbied Congress for new laws to curb piracy. Now, though, digital music services have gone mainstream, promising listeners a world of perfectly legal possibilities and an end to the major labels' vice grip. If only it were so. Far from becoming obsolete, the four largest record labels -- Universal, Sony, Warner Music Group and EMI -- now control almost 90 percent of the music market. And if the Federal Trade Commission signs off this week on Universal Music's controversial $2 billion takeover of EMI, the new behemoth would control over 40 percent of the market alone -- enough to make the company the gatekeeper for all sonic innovation, from Silicon Valley to Sweden."

  20. jamale davis-photos A NEW AND COMING PLAYER ON THE JAZZ SCENE IS BASSIST JAMALE DAVIS. last night i was an enthralled by an hour plus late night swinging offering by his group, featuring pithy relatively unknown to all but hardcore jazz fans, compositions by the likes of strayhorn, gryce, jackie mc, and dameron. he often uses a very swinging arco technigue, but his playing is clean and crisp. his group is very well dressed, classy, and would fit in any room. the knowledgeable audience loved the performance, and the applause got louder with each number. i would that mr. davis has had classical studies for many many years. there seems to be little of his work available on cd or online, as sideman with ned goold.
