Jan Johansson with Gunnar Johnsson playing 'New Rhumba' in 1961:

There's always Hank Jones to listen to, and one or two half-decent Jimmy Mundy arrangements. But I agree that Baker is weak.

Sweden's strange Christmas eve Tradition
Daniel A replied to Randy Twizzle's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The article is correct. Back when I was a student I used to fill in as a bus driver in Stockholm during Christmas because of the allowance, and during the hour when the Donald Duck show was aired the streets (and buses) were literary empty. -
This has been in the coming for some time. But the fax isn't dead; at least once a week people are asking me to fax various documents to them. This is mostly because fax is considered more safe than e-mail (a common view in the bank world), but there's still a minority who ask for fax - because they are not yet into e-mail! The law business is largely very conservative.

Thanks! I'll start with one of the Ericsons as it includes the Christmas motets I've had in my head lately.

I'm looking for recommendations for recordings of Francis Poulenc's choral works. I've got a nice CD set of three Decca albums covering all of the orchestral music (Orchestre National de France/Dutoit) so, if possible, I would like to try to avoid collections doubling this material as I'm satisfied with these recordings.

Cancer took my wonderful wife last week
Daniel A replied to Son-of-a-Weizen's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
My deepest condolences to you and your family on your loss. So sad to hear this. -
Probably the recording equipment ran at the wrong speed. If the tape is streched the pitch would have been too low, not too high. In cases when CDs have been mastered from mis-pitched tapes, I feel lucky my old CD player has got a pitch control.

Maintaining a CD Collection (AM New York article)

My wife is away during the weekend and all was set for some "difficult" listening, but somehow I didn't feel like it, so - inspired by a recent mention in another thread - I put on Hank Mobley's 'Far Away Lands' (French DMM). Every time I listen to this album every second year or so I seem to think the same thing - that it's better than I remembered! Taken with a cup of Kusmi "Anastasia" Tea.

I think Persip's lost even before that. Something sounds wrong towards the end of Reece's solo. Around 1:50 it sounds as if Persip is putting an accent on 'two' as if it's the first beat of the bar. Never thought of this before, and it's a fine album nevertheless.

Wayne Shorter: Odyssey of Iska & Moto Grosso Feio
Daniel A replied to AndrewHill's topic in Discography
I seem to remember that Wayne is said to have been very dissatisfied with Duke Pearson's production on that date. There's a thread somewhere here, I believe. This is not the thread in question, but there´s something about Wayne's opinion of Duke Pearson: -
Happy birthday, Guy! Thanks for bringing your enthusiasm and knowledge to this place!

Wayne Shorter: Odyssey of Iska & Moto Grosso Feio
Daniel A replied to AndrewHill's topic in Discography
'Teo's Bag' is on 'The Collector' but not 'Etcetera', Clifford. At least on the LPs. 'Teo's Bag' turns up on that 6CD Herbie Hancock box as well I think. That's the one that's on the CD issue of Adam's Apple. To avoid pontential confusion: "Teo's Bag" and "The Collector" are alternate titles for the same tune, and it was recorded at one of the sessions that yielded the 'Adam's Apple' album. So the album 'Etcetera' contains everything recorded on June 14, 1965, while the Japanese Shorter LP 'The Collector' (GXF 3059) substituted "Toy Tune" from that session for "The Collector/Teo's Bag" (found as a bonus track on the CD release of 'Adam's Apple'). -
Many thanks! I had a great day (OK at work, a lot better later on)! Since I didn't get a real birthday cake I try too look at the one Bentsy posted as often as I can.

CTI reissues: box-set, 1971 concert, single titles
Daniel A replied to ghost of miles's topic in Re-issues
I wondered that myself. I just figured it was a different version than the one that's on SALT SONG. I like it, though. "Gibraltar" on the current reissue of 'Sugar' was recorded at the same session as the rest of the album, but Creed Taylor chose not to include it, allegedly because he found it too monotonous... It was recorded again four months later during the sessions for "The Sugar Man", but again wasn't included on the album. I've gotten these reissues and I'm very happy with the sound. The only album I had on CD previously is 'Red Clay' (from 2001) and compared to that I prefer the sound on the latest reissue. As has been mentioned the sound is warm and full, and while I haven't compared them with the LP versions they seem to have been remastered faithfully to the original sound. A big drawback is the lack of any information whatsoever (dates, musicians etc.) regarding bonus tracks. -
Prestige Records....gold & black trident label?
Daniel A replied to Jazz Vinyl's topic in Discography
I'm no expert, but doesn't that look like the early 70s "Fantasy" Prestige label? -
Best wishes for a great birthday, Reinier!

I've got a fair bit of CD:s that I really don't need (jazz and classical), but it's not worth it going through the trouble to (try and) sell them. There is no domestic equivalent to Amazon marketplace here and the CD stores are so picky they won't even bother with many major names. As for buying CD:s I nearly stopped two years ago for many different reasons and haven't really gotten into it again. I'm holding on to my favourites, but buying new CD:s somehow has begun to feel as exciting as buying pre-recorded cassettes did 20 years ago.

It depends on the dynamic range of the material. Low volume passages have narrower grooves. There are classical LPs with up to 45 minutes on one side.
