Belated thanks, everybody! I'm heartened that I'm still remembered here, despite my low activity in later years. Since three months I'm the father of a lovely daughter who takes up most of my spare time and I feel very happy about it. I still got plans for another album, though. I was even thinking about releasing it on an all-analogue LP (+download, but no CD) and have been reasearching pressing plants across Europe, but it appears it would simply be too costly. The end product will most likely be a CD in a 6- or 8-side digipak with a booklet (as well as a digital download). There are tentative plans for recording in February-March.

Herbie Hancock Complete Columbia Box

According to a guy I know at Sony, it has been pushed back indefinitely. -
I've always been intrigued by Ruggiero and would like to know more about him. Maybe there's even enough for a separate thread.

Further down at the same page: "When he refused to remove his hat at the Blue Morocco cafe in The Bronx, eccentric musician Thelonious Monk was swiftly ushered to the door."

From D to D: Happy birthday!

I'm not sure it really is of significance, but wasn't the 'Yellow Shark' album orchestrated by someone else?

I've always loved Duke Pearson's playing and arranging. There's a certain vibe to most of his work which communicates warmth and honesty. There are some nice reflections on Pearson in this (old) thread: Edit: Almost forgot - my favorite album is 'Sweet Honey Bee'!

It seems to be common knowledge that Jackie most often tuned his instrument sharp, but yesterday I happened to hear a tune from Walter Davis' Blue Note album on the car stereo (might have been 's Make It) where I could have sworn he's a bit low.

If this document is to be trusted, since 1999 there is a 50 year protection for performers as well as producers also in Andorra, so the original producer/rightsholder would have to give his permission to a reissue. Previously, I've seen references to a shorter duration of neighboring rights on Andorra, but apparently they apply the same durations as the EU.

I wouldn't say that the Japanese suffers from the reverb, because I find the original issue to be too dry, but in comparsion with the Rhino digipak from 1998 (cat.no 8122-75352-2) it sounds distant and indistinct, albeit easier on the ear. The Japanese version I'm talking about is "Inner Space", cat.no WPCR-13194. It sounds much like the 70s Atlantic LP twofer. The main reason for getting the "Inner Space" CD would be the unissued tracks from the session which are not on the Rhino release.

Belated birthday greetings, Flurin!

I think 'Latin Kaleidoscope' is one of the most enjoyable CBBB albums. There seems to have been a string of recent SABA/MPS reissues of other artists as well, but I haven't been able to find any comprehensive listing.

I also love vintage gear. I've used a Harman/Kardon 930 from 1973 for more than ten years and wouldn't want to change it for anything else. My setup:

Are there any box bargains currently available?

The rights on photographs are sytematically ignored on this board too! Get furious everybody!! Seriously, in fact as I pointed out in another thread cover images are now often doctored so as to resemble originals without infringing copyright, so this issue has plainly come up somehow and in some context. As for performing rights, of course the so-called gray labels make a point of saying they have paid that, and maybe they have. In relation to both those issues (of disfigured quotation and avoiding paying composers) it is worth remembering that one reason the tunes on so many hard bop style LPs are so uh unmemorable is that they are hastily composed nothings designed to fit a famous chord sequence, thus avoiding royalties to the composer and earning them for the new 'composer'. Of course why *this* should be is another whole question in the history of copyright, but it is that history people here get bent out of shape about. And of course no-one here has yet turned their righteous anger on Charlie Parker or Lee Morgan for ripping off George Gershwin with their grey market recompositions... I don't think the fact that bad art is protected by copyright is enough to quash the IP laws. -

I have no problem with the moderating. These reissues may be legal in some countries, illegal in others; either way, they are easy enough to find even without direct links from here. While I don't think it would matter too much to allow links, I have sympathy for the view of the owner of these forums from a moral point of view. I can't say that I worry a lot about the sales figures of companies who are never doing anything else than copying the work of others. -

After some correspondence it has turned out that no publisher has the rights for "Stars" and that permission must be obtained from Mr. Kleinschuster himself. As always, I would be very grateful for any information that could help to put me in contact with Erich Kleinschuster. -
I'll be able to check this later, but I believe that the japanese "Inner Space" CD uses the same master as the 70s twofer LP, which had added reverb. I think original vinyl sounds OK, if somewhat thin, and that the digipak is not too much worse.

To put the prices in perspective: Jerry Seinfeld is appearing here in Stockholm in a 15.000 seat arena this spring, and the tickets are more than twice the price of Shorter at Olympia.

I think this policy might backfire. Many sellers will probably stop offering international shipping, which in turn will decrease the overall bidding level. eBay has dominated the online auction market for too long. Maybe the right time for a competitor to enter the scene?

Rather than to create a new thread, I', posting my question here. My only eBay experience is from the buyer's end, but against better judgment I'm now considering listing a couple of items for auction. There is no eBay site for Sweden, so I'll have to list them on eBay.com or eBay.co.uk. eBay is forcing me to set a "domestic" shipping cost for the US (or UK) that is way below the actual cost. Is there any way to override these settings (that obviously do not make sense for sellers outside the US or UK)? A flat rate won't do it, since it's limited by eBay according to what "average" buyers find "reasonable".

The IAEA introduced a system for rating nuclear events in 1990, called INES (International Nuclear Event Scale). Chernobyl was rated "7" which is the highest level. The last official statement from Japanese authorities regarding the INES rating seems to be from three days ago when it was rated "4", but the French nuclear safety authorities (among others) have upgrated the rating to "6". Here's a summary on the IAEA website: http://www.iaea.org/newscenter/news/tsunamiupdate01.html
