Before the dismal releases of the mid-70s, Jamal made some interesting recordings with the Jamil Nasser/Frank Gant trio on Cadet and Impulse, some of which are hard to find now. The only one which seems to be readily available is 'The Awakening', which may also be the best of them. 'Heat Wave' 1966 (Cadet, reissued on CD by GRP) 'Ahmad Jamal at the Top - Poinciana Revisited' 1968 (Impulse, reissued on CD in Japan) 'Tranquility' 1968 (Impulse) 'The Awakening' 1970 (Impulse, reissued on CD) 'Freeflight' 1972 (Impulse, reissued on CD by GRP) 'Outertineinnerspace' 1972 (Impulse) (I'm excluding two albums with trio+choir since even Dusty Groove describes them as "colorless"; never seen or heard any of them myself) I once had 'Freeflight' on LP but traded it away many years ago, which I now regret a bit. I tried to listen to the sound clips at Verve's site, but clearly someone has made a mistake: http://www.vervemusicgroup.com/artist/rele...84&aid=2665

Some big hitters escaping from the likes of Columbia...
Daniel A replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Re-issues
Probably by copying existing CD releases. I thought the old Discovery label was still controlled by Warner. Or is this some independent rip-off label? -
'Locomotion' is a library-type album with short tracks, time-locked rhythms and unadventorous playing, as I remember it. A curious item of interest to Solal collectors, but of limited musical value.

Updated for the last time this year. Not sure I'll be able to keep up with updating a thread like this for 2009. I'll try of course!

Gil Melle - Complete Blue Note 50's Sessions
Daniel A replied to mgraham333's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Wouldn't it be a nice touch if these titles were delivered as CD-RW:s, so that you can erase them if the music is not to you liking? -
This one is essential:

.99 cent bin WEST COAST JAZZ discovery (+ bonus item)
Daniel A replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Discography
Actually it wasn't on this, but on another, long-defunct board (although re-posted here). But it was amusing! -
I thought you said "comes closest"... OK, sorry... Anyway, that would probably be "The Real McCoy". But personally, I think I listen to 'The Sidewinder' even more seldom.

Thanks for describing it so much better, MG. Yes, when someone is using the link to one of his cover scans to display that picture in a post on these forums, for example, the picture will be uploaded from his site into the web browser of every person who is viewing that thread. A picture is a lot more heavy on data than plain text, so most of the data transmission in a typical "cover art thread" will be not from Jim Alfredson's web service, but from the original sources of those pictures. Of course, there is always the option Chris is describing, to download the picture to your own computer, and then attach it to your post on the forums. But if everybody did that on the cover threads I wonder if we wouldn't be pushing Jim's limit.

The first time I heard 'Adam's Apple' I was slightly underwhelmed (the only Shorter album I'd heard at that point was 'Speak No Evil'), but I learned to like it and the tune I always hear in my head when I think of that album these days is 'El Gaucho', such a good tune. Never heard another version of that tune with the very special vibe of the original! (Which of course goes for most Shorter - or any original jazz - compositions, but anyway...)
-
I think he does that (or maybe some software automatically does it for him) because people are using the site as an album cover resource and that much of his bandwidth is used up by direct linking to his scans. The real purpose of the site is just a self-conscious display of his (admittedly great) collection.

Wasn't it revealed ages ago that the master tape for that session is damaged? Nice to see BN do vinyl, but selling these only in LP+CD sets doesn't ring well with me. I would take it most people interested in analog quality remasters of these titles already have them on CD. I suppose one could always give the CDs away...

a bandleader muses on sidepersons' do's and don'ts
Daniel A replied to fasstrack's topic in Musician's Forum
Unfortunately, the link doesn't work for me. -
You mean the long-box format? No I think he means this one, the square plexiglass box:

Rosnes' "Ancestors" (on Blue Note, now deleted - featuring Nicholas Payton and Chris Potter) had some good original compositions. I find it to be her most enjoyable album.

Still issued as in print on the Rearward site. I believe they've run out of LP copies but do still have the CD.

Does that board still exist? I couldn't find it. I guess it never survived the departure of all former BNBB members when this board started... The Harlem site is still there, but the board was closed a couple of years ago, I think. For the last years there was absolutely no action at all - much like how it was before the closing of the BNBB. I believe everybody came and went within one single week in the spring of 2003...

Which, of course, buyers never do. Usually the buyer is the one to submit feedback first, so I would think buyers were subject to this more often than sellers.

Thanks for your insightful posts, Allen. They will certainly make me think twice before visiting Sweden again.

Driving around in a car with a camera on the roof. Saw them last week in Stockholm in a beaten 1980s Volvo 740.

Sent you a PM, Sidewinder (though I don't know if you'll be able to check it from here - Stockholm, that is). Harald's shop - "Andra Jazz" - is probably the best in Scandinavia for jazz LPs. Current location: Rödabergsgatan 9 (Nearest subway station: S:t Eriksplan). The shop is usually open around 2-6.30 p.m. Mon-Fri, a bit earlier on Sat. The records shop at the so-called Stalinist square ("Sergels torg") is - like every other shop of that kind - useless these days. It's practically impossible to buy new CDs anywhere in Sweden except on the internet. Second hand shops have been reduced to half during the last 10 years; those surviving most often also sell DVDs. If you're looking for jazz, second hand shops are the only choice. You might also want to check out "Cosmo's Factory", Upplandsgatan 47, Subway Odenplan.

Happy birthday! I hope you're doing fine and enjoying life!

Thanks, everyone! And that picture is priceless, Chris!! (Is that Ray Brown comping on bass, BTW? ) I'm quite busy these days, at work and not least with finishing a CD with my band which will be out in December (yes, there are still some of us actually putting out albums). A financial disaster, of course, but a decent marketing tool and a valuable document for me personally - something I'll never regret.

Very good to know that the previous contractual problems (can't remember specifics, but I believe they were once addressed by mark@verve) have been solved!
