Music you've really been digging lately.
neveronfriday replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Teddy Wilson. Teddy Wilson. Teddy Wilson. And I'm listening to stuff you guys are never going to hear. Screw lawyers, etsates, corporate greed and stupid mofos wherever they are. P.S. Does anyone know a good lawyer who can mediate between a European and an American estate? -

If we were to do this, at least we'd know that everything they issued would be way too big for its container. Up over and out. You really think so? I'd rather like to think no matter what, it would be too small. Down, across and in. -

I've been a customer there for ages. They are usually very fast. Got most of my stuff today. On that topic: LOL! That Verve design department is a whack-job and a half: a) The Ella Ellington slipcase is too big for what's in there. b) The Ella Gershwin Slipcase is to slim for what they stuffed in there. c) The (nice) Ella/Louis you have to cut open to get to the music. d) To get the discs out of the Ella Songbooks, you need pliers. I think we should all pitch in and buy those guys a healthy supply of Playboy magazines. That would probably significantly reduce worldwide headaches and stop those monkeys from living out their sexual frustrations in the design department. Edit (Correction): The Ella Gershwin slipcase is far too flimsy for everything that's squeezed in there, so after once in and out, it is now too big. -
Good luck.

Verve's CEO
neveronfriday replied to montg's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Probably not what you had in mind, and certainly not earth-shakingly new, but in context I thought these findings here were quite interesting: -
That UK offer was just great. I always thought the Ella/Armstrong complete set was too expensive since I had one of the single Verve remasters already. Now it was affordable. Ditto for the Ellington & Gershwin Songbooks (the latter I only bought because it was that cheap ... Ella is a bit too subdued on that one for my taste ... I heard my dad's LP box many times). The Nina Simone I had on my list forever, now I could finally jump on it. Etc. I'm really looking forward to the stuff, which has (mostly) been shipped already. Early Christmas (again). I decided to not get any of the Coltranes (not an easy decision). I'll go for some individual discs once I've checked out what is worthwhile in regard to my current listening habits and tastes. Thanks for all the advice here! I've just bought too much lately, also quite a bit of it because of frustration with a million hospital visits, etc. Currently I'm enjoying the Vogue box set and some Telarcs I bought from zweitausendeins dirty cheap. When I looked the other day, they had many (apparently only one or two copies) of their (uneven) jazz line. Plus, I got myself the 2gether (Warren Vaché & Bill Charlap) which is not only a really good album but also sounds fantastic (the sound being the reason I sprung for those Telarcs in the first place ... some Brubeck, Shearing, Jazz Messengers (Legacy of Art Blakey) and some uneven late Mulligan recordings ... all at, what, 2 or 3 Euro? I can sell them for more on eBay if they turn out to have been a "waste" of money and/or my time). If I do manage to finance the Cole set, I will definitely have to stop shopping for quite some time. It has become excessive these past weeks and months (I bought a ton of on-sale DVDs from around the globe to stock up on classics as well). ...

Any visible trends since implementation? Any reports. I know it's early, but I'm all giddy about hearing if this is doing it for ya' ... but I'll be patient. -

Hm. Need to get a coin to toss. Let me look at my credit card balance. I might spring for both ... they are relatively cheap at the moment. Damn. Offers. Now I need to talk my dad into giving me the Cole Bear Family set. On second thought, that might be the road to take ... that's a LOT easier than talking him into giving me Coltrane. Thanks for the helpful advice, all of you. @Chuck Nessa: The sentence was fine with me.

I need some help. I can't read worth sh*t at the moment (eye problems) and want to get one of the Coltrane boxes from that (grrrrrr) amazon.co.uk box sale. I have laughingly little Coltrane in my collection (Love Supreme, a comp or two). I'm not much into the more, err, adventurous Coltrane (appreciate the quality, but haven't yet reached the musical maturity to actually listen to it with pleasure, so to speak) ... so which one should I get? The Complete Village Vanguard Recordings The Complete Impulse Studio Recordings Instinctively, I would say the Impulse box, right? Any advice? Thanks!

The Tatum, Fitzgerald, Basie and Contemporrary I have. Are the Ellingtons worth it (in this older remastered form)? And, Monsieur ubu, stop posting links to that money-eating machine! -

Found this list compiled by king ubu elsewhere here. The box set does not include all of these ... maybe there's another box coming, although the rest doesn't merit a 10-CD set? -
Sorry about being late to this thread. Happy birthday, Flurin!

Forget about (most) amg reviews. If I agreed with them, I'd have to throw half of my collection out.

I have about 30 commercial pop Cds released in this format (from the 80s, early 90s). I do remember that there is a site by some English dude online who tried to catalogue all of the commercially released ones. I just can't find it now. He doesn't use 3'' but some other measurement to refer to them. If I kept my bookmarks more organized, I'd be able to find it in a second ... His site is quite comprehensive, but there are some missing (for example some of the ones I have), but those 3''ers are quite elusive ... and went for a premium on eBay some years ago to nutty collectors.

Great compilation. One more recommendation from me (although some people might groan). Lionel Hampton and Oscar Peterson: The Complete Quartets & Quintets http://tinyurl.com/r7oek If you like small groups stuff, these disks can swing your socks off. Just sayin' ... A bit expensive on Amazon, but the set is often available on eBay (or was) for anywhere between $30 and $50. Along with the Goodman small groups stuff, this 5-disc set is at the very top of my list. We did, as far as I recall, have a very good small groups recommendations thread around here which convinced me to buy most of the recordings recommended there. I haven't regretted a single purchase. ... Or the Lionel Hampton small groups Victor sessions. ... My list is a mile or two long ...

I had this one on my server for another board. This was taken in 2002, just around the corner from where I was staying in DK. It's been blown up a bit, but it's Osgood towards the end of the festival that year. Edit: And, yes, his cans were terrible (and had been thrown around quite a bit those two weeks or so) and the cymbals were really old mouldy Zildjans (some people say that old mouldy Zildjans sound better ), but Osgood made the kit sound good ... and it suited his outward appearance.

Good to see this, neveronfriday! You're obviously taking the best medicine available Get on well Hi brownie, yep, I'm doing fine so far. "Best medicine" means that they charge for every breath you take here. They've actually got a Steinway in the hall and there's a terminally ill patient here that plays some astonishing Teddy Wilson stuff every afternoon from about 15.00 to 16.00. I'm his only listener since this diagnostics clinic has very few patients that are actually staying here (no wonder, considering the costs). I'm told that in the summer months, the clinic is flooded with millionaires in for their check-ups. I'll try to be out by then. Cheers! P.S.: They let me out for a few days after the first round of tests in order for me to catch my breath ... I'm going back in today.

There's a review on that other jazz board: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=18909 I saw Osgood live many times. One of the quirkiest drummers to watch, but a very distinct style. That guy has rhythm in his blood, no doubt about it. He's also all over the place in DK ... usually, he's the most active musician during the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, playing more gigs than anyone else. On the last day, he usually looks like a ghost. Maybe they play him then?

Just wanted to let you know that I'm really enjoying your broadcast. I'm in this fancy hospital at the moment that's got single rooms with classy notebooks and free Internet access (and no, that's not normal in my country at all) and the broadcasts are helping me get through a lot of painful stuff. I think I've gone through your archives a hundred times. Faves so far have been the Cole, the Christy mix and the Ike Quebec one. Thanks. P.S.: I also listen regularly at home.

I've had cancer, and I laugh about it plenty. Best thing to do. I also used to listen to a lot of smooth jazz. Today I laugh about most of that as well.
