  1. 33? I would have thought you were a LOT older! Happy birthday, my Dutch friend! Have a good one (or two, or three, or ...)
  2. Did a bit of surfing quickly, and here I found Isola listed as a sideman, but I'm not sure this site doesn't make a mistake. 'Round Midnight (Milestone M-9144) is listed there in the discography section, and that might explain it. http://www.monkzone.com/sidemenhtml.htm Cheers!
  3. Damn. I don't have all that much Monk (standard stuff only), but I can recall that coming up in a conversation once. I actually did meet Frank, but that's ages ago, and another story ... Cheers!
  4. Didn't Frank also record with Monk? I think so. Sad news. He was an excellent, unobtrusive drummer with a great sense of timing.
  5. I just ordered 11 OJC's ($107) from AllDirect myself last week .... they must wonder what is going on? The only problem with AllDirect I have found over the years is that it takes them a long time to stock new things, and when they go out of stock, it takes them a long time to restock. But, when they do have the stuff, their basic prices are the best, and their delivery time is excellent. Of course, for brand new releases, the pre-release prices from CDUniverse are the best I have found. Should I also order 11 CDs? Is it a magic number? Can I win anything?
  6. Now that's funny! Don't quite get why they call this the Open House All Star Sessions though...just cuz they are all, all stars??? Why open house??? I mention this once or twice a year for no good reason except the tune Gin for Christmas is one of my all time favorites! If it is on the new set, or on you old French black and whites, turn it up to 11! "Gin for Christmas" is track 14 on Vol. 4 (that's CD 2 of Jazz Tribune #74). Fun tune. Nice drum ditties. Great Ziggy stuff. There are just great numbers throughout those twofers. I just don't get that I didn't make the connection between these and the Avid discs. Maybe I was hoping that it was some 30's, 40's and 50's Hampton that I didn't have. I think I should perhaps learn a bit more about these sessions instead of just listening to them. Not bloody likely though in the near future. Cheers!
  7. If it's as good as you say, it's dirt cheap!
  8. That was the first Christmas present I bought for myself. I'm glad I did! Others (unfortunately) followed ... ... and more are yet to come. Cheers!
  9. Hey, brooms (!) turned int o a WWII thread again. It seems to be a constant on this board. Get over it, already.
  10. I bought mine second-hand, so that's not an option (the set that is especially bad has been out of print for a while). Again, my CD player has no problems with the CDs (and I'm going to try to burn some copies just now), but ... Cheers!
  11. Title says it all. I got some spankin' new Verve CDs (stupid ****ing Verve box sets), and some CDs have some glue on the surface which apparently oozed out of the "protective" sleeve. It's not much, my main CD player doesn't mind, but I want to remove the stuff because it might damage the CDs along the way. What's the best way of getting the stuff off? I need some sort of liquid, whatever. Cheers!
  12. I'm gonna go with the "Complete Peanuts" slipcased edition of the first two volumes instead.
  13. Congratulations! Have a great day!
  14. Thanks Steve. And re the "jazz-aholic" thread elsewhere: As it turns out, I have most of these sessions already on two old Jazz Tribune twofers (BMG France/RCA '93/'94). Typical. Cheers!
  15. Forget it. I ordered the two double CD sets. I guess I'll find out what I wanted to know soon ... Cheers!
  16. Hi everyone, I was just wondering when the "Open House All Star Sessions: Chicago, Hollywood & New York" sold by Avid took place. The musicians were, as far as I could find out, Coleman Hawkins, Benny Carter, Harry James, Johah Jones, Charlie Christian, and Teddy Bunn. Anyone else? Cheers!
  17. That line is turning into a modern classic! Seriously now. I have no problem with someone else not liking what I like (if that was actually the content of Chuck's post). Hell, I like Oscar Peterson and I can take the other board members' abuse. I, for example, simply very much dislike free jazz etc., and I say so once in a while, but it doesn't stop me from reading about it here. Maybe I'll pick up a taste for it one day and if so, it was probably because of this board more than anything else. So, someone not liking Gene Harris or anything else I like is no skin off my nose. Cheers!
  18. Dan, Brad, Dave and everyone else ... thanks a million for your recommendations. Once I've taken in what I got these past few days (am listening to the Trio Plus One SACD as I type this), I'll get back to this thread. Thanks for making some bleak days brighter by "making" me buy some good music. Cheers!
  19. Yes, I didn't dare ask, but I'm interested in how things are going. Best, ...
  20. on the serious tip, i think if you enjoyed the map of the world soundtrack (the film quickly vanished), that you may find something in the way up. remember, that was a 6 minute clip from a 60+ minute composition... -e- Interestingly enough, I went out of my way to unearth this rather obscure film and was majorly disappointed. I don't know ... I love the music and the film just didn't live up to any of the images in my head, the often somber mood, the thoughtfulness of some of the compositions. It just sucked, really. Sigourney Weaver sucked too, sorry to say. Cheers!
  21. Bad news for Verve.
  22. may we simply injur you? -e- Yeah, I can take a little abuse ...
  23. Don't kill me for this, but after having seen PM live in the beginning 80s, which was a major revelation, and after having been an avid listener for almost 20 years, PM doesn't tell me much anymore. It's interesting, perhaps, but there's too much of the same stuff going on all the time. I find it boring and I'm quite disappointed in the new clip posted. Yawn. Still, one of PM's CDs is an all-time favourite (and maybe not one many people like): Pat Metheny. A Map of the World. OST. Warner Bros. 1999. Cheers!
  24. With me, it's a bit different. I didn't have much jazz and got tired of the other pretty large collection I had. Out of the blue (well, it had been simmering for quite a while) I had this "jazz attack" and it hasn't stopped, although it has slowed down a bit. Within a one/two year period I caught up and purchased anywhere between 1000 and 2000 CDs (lots of box sets), many of them second hand or after I had surfed the Internet thin to find the cheapest copy of any one CD. Today I've reduced my purchases mostly to "safe bets", stuff I know I'll like or that is recommended to me by people whose taste I respect. Haven't really gotten any duds because of it either. Problem: There's still a whole lot I know I'll like. And some idiots () on this board are turning me on to stuff unknown to me that just sounds very interesting. Cheers!
