  1. I agree with you, Jim. Since it's from Blender, I'm sure it was compiled by and FOR teens & 20-somethins, their target audience. I mean, if it ain't got "In the Year 2525" on it, how can it be complete? Though I have to give them props for including "Shiny Happy People" - what an awful tune!(and I generally like older r.e.m.)
  2. NEW YORK (AP) -- Starship may have built this city on rock and roll, but Blender magazine is tearing it down, naming the band's "We Built This City" as the worst song ever. Some tunes on the "50 Worst Songs Ever!" list were selected for their melodies, others "are wretchedly performed" and "quite a few don't make sense whatsoever," the magazine said. The list, which appears in the May issue, includes songs by New Kids on the Block, Meat Loaf, The Doors, Lionel Richie, Hammer and The Beach Boys, among others. Blender describes 1985's "We Built This City" as "the truly horrible sound of a band taking the corporate dollar while sneering at those who take the corporate dollar." Starship lead singer Grace Slick says, "This is not me," when the magazine reminds her of the tune. "Now you're an actor. It's the same as Meryl Streep playing Joan of Arc." Rounding out the top 10: "Achy Breaky Heart," Billy Ray Cyrus; "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" Wang Chung; "Rollin'," Limp Bizkit; "Ice Ice Baby," Vanilla Ice; "The Heart of Rock & Roll," Huey Lewis and the News; "Don't Worry Be Happy," Bobby McFerrin; "Party All the Time," Eddie Murphy; "American Life," Madonna; and "Ebony and Ivory," Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder. Other songs on the list: Toby Keith's "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue" (No. 22); Whitney Houston's "Greatest Love of All" (No. 30); Ricky Martin's "She Bangs" (No. 39); Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire" (No. 41); Simon & Garfunkel's "The Sounds of Silence" (No. 42); The Beatles' "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" (No. 48); and Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" (No. 50). Blender and VH1's TV special "50 Most Awesomely Bad Songs ... Ever" airs May 12.
  3. I'm too lazy to reply. search the board dammit. the answer is there. Hey Hey Hey! What is that - an answer??? This is the "Stupid Question Corner". It says nothing about answers, especially stupid answers! We'll have none of that here!
  4. Omedeto Gozaimasu! (this is my attempt at Japanese, very rusty!) ...think I'll stick with: Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag!!! :rsmile:
  5. I'm glad to hear you're ok too Brandon. I'm not sure I'd want to ride in downtown traffic in Austin, or any larger city for that matter. Too many bad drivers too worry about, not to mention buses with lots of blind spots. I've got an old Trek 1400 (circa 1991) that I plan to fix up a little bit and resume riding regularly. Used to ride with a group of people down here in Corpus Christi regularly on Saturday mornings, and occasionally weekdays as well. You wouldn't believe the types of things that happen. We've had beer cans thrown at us from trucks driving by, and drivers deliberately trying to sideswipe us. There was a female that used to ride with us, and at least twice she had people in cars/trucks reach out and try to grab/touch her as she was riding!
  6. Noticed this one in my local Best Buy this past weekend. Anyone have this? I've never seen the film, but remember some mixed reviews back when it came out...
  7. Doh!!!!! Where can I send you the obligatory case of Money Jungle cds, as penance for my crime?
  8. Sorry catesta, but being in south Texas, I'm rooting for the "sorry" Spurs, THE defending champions. Ginobili outta win the 6th Man award, or whatever it's called. And Duncan is equally deserving of MVP, whether he or Garnett win it. Spurs aren't flashy like the Lakers, but they have been consistently solid, and play team ball. Lakers need to pick up their game alot, if they want to advance past the 1st round. I'm sure the Zen-Master will light a fire under them somehow.
  9. I stayed up and watched the Lakers-Rockets game on Saturday. I think if the Rockets had taken the ball to the hoop on the final play, they could've won the game. Either by sinking the basket or getting fouled by the Lakes. I can't imagine that 3 point attempt was drawn up at all. Lakers were very lucky to escape with a win, on their own court no less. But a win's a win, either way. I read the first round is now a best of 7 series. When did they change from best of 5? Could they drag the playoffs out any longer?? It's like a complete second season of basketball (more exciting than the regular season as well).
  10. Up - I'm still curious about this Moran disc. If it's music that's not available elsewhere, it's definitely got my attention. Thanks, Erik
  11. Why do they do this? I placed an order for some discs (primarily some of the newer RVGs) that were listed as "in stock". I didn't realize it was only good once, and had planned to go back later in the day and make another order, for some additional discs that were on back order (available in 1-2 weeks or something like that). But I'm not doing this without the extra 15% off. Seems like they could have simply made the code good for a set period of time, instead of one-use only.
  12. Anybody know if this was this ever issued domestically? I'm guessing not... Herbie Hancock - Riot TOCJ 66021, 1999 Tracks: 1. Riot (First Alt Take) / Herbie Hancock 2. Riot (Second Alt Take) / Herbie Hancock 3. Blind Man, Blind Man (Alt / Herbie Hancock 4. Mimosa (Alt Take) / Herbie Hancock 5. Goodbye To Childhood (Alt / Herbie Hancock 6. Prisoner (Alt Take) / Herbie Hancock 7. Firewater (Alt Take) / Herbie Hancock I'd provide the cover art, but Tower's website uses dynamic pages in the tags, whatever that means. edit - Also, what is this?? Jason Moran - "Jason Moran" TOCJ-66068 One of his domestic albums released with a different title?
  13. Ah, c'mon John - it's easy to keep those two straight. I tend to get mixed up and confuse Jimmy Smith's "Chicken & Beer" with Ludacris', which was apparently part of the Blue Note Cover Series...
  14. It's still there - you just can't see it...
  15. What I want to know is which crate you store your Mosaics in...
  16. I mentioned this album in the "listening" thread yesterday, but if anyone is interested in a Wilco project that was done after YHF, but before the new one, check out the Minus 5's "Down with Wilco". Sort of a hidden Wilco album, and well worth checking out. Wilco teamed up with Scott McCaughey and Peter Buck of R.E.M. (the only regular members in the revolving Minus 5 lineup) and put this one out. Reading the AMG write up, this album suffered a similar fate to YHF, in that it was recorded in 2001, slated to be released on a major label, got shelved, and then released on the indie Yep Roc label.
  17. Where are you going to fit those in your listening room, couw??
  18. Maybe because Holland is a small country, you have to make LARGE shoes??
  19. They allowed those wooden shoes to cross the border into Deutschland?? By the way, the biggest wooden shoes I ever saw were in the Keukenhof, the world's largest flower garden.
  20. Is this the same PFunkJazz that used to contribute positively around the BNBB?? I remember reading alot of recommendations (alot of funk related stuff, obviously), and thought he was in deep in the LA music scene. The post above doesn't even sound like the same dude. Maybe it's Kareem posting under alias?
  21. turn it up... "Sweet Home Alabama, where the skies are so blue..."
  22. For German artists singing in German, I used to hear a semi-rap/rock group called the "Fantastischen Vier" quite a bit on German radio and MTV. Not sure if it's in the style you're looking for, but they seemed pretty popular. Maybe the Bohse Onkelz are more your taste?
  23. Wow - I haven't even posted in this thread, and I SUCK.
  24. I remember being 9 years old in 1974, living in Japan. Hank Aaron came to Tokyo for a home-run hitting contest with the Japanese baseball hero Sadaharu Oh. My dad took me to this contest, which Aaron won, 10-9. The Mets were there for a game against the Japanese all-stars, and the contest was a related event, held the day before, if my memory isn't too shot. Anyway, ever since, Hank Aaron has been one of my all-time favorites. Can't say a whole lot of other baseball players since those days has ever appealed to me. Like Jim, Aaron reminds me of good times with my father, who passed away back in '91. -Erik
