  1. En Route is due out next Tuesday, finally... I"m really looking forward to this live trio date, as it's been a long time since Sco's released a live album! It got 4 stars from All Music, and a pretty good write-up: AMG REVIEW: Following a series of coruscating servings of progressive uber funk for Verve, Scofield stripped down to a trio for this live session at New York's Blue Note club in December 2003. He hooked up with a pair of old friends, the terrific loose-limbed drummer Bill Stewart, and the tense, nimble bassist Steve Swallow, and the three go after each other in some often-furiously busy, driving, tangled interplay, defying the frigid New York weather of that period. Denzil Best's "Wee" gets a scorching, asymmetrical workout to start, and Swallow's "Name That Tune" promptly goes into super overdrive, with Scofield darting all over the place in his idiosyncratic way. "Hammock Soliloquy" varies between another of Scofield's irresistible, laid-back, country tunes and more combustible high-speed interplay, while "Bag" ain't nothin' but the blues with a volatile groove. A highly-convoluted trip through "It Is Written" precedes — and partially pre-echoes — a quiet ballad-tempo rendition of the Bacharach/David tune "Alfie." The closest thing to the jazz/funk jams of Scofield's recent past is an 11-minute closing workout called "Over Big Top" — a paraphrase of "Bigtop" from his Groove Elation album — churning and driving relentlessly. Leaning more toward Scofield's jazz side per se, this high-energy outing should pass the time quite agreeably until he unleashes another of his jazz/funk groove-a-thons. — Richard S. Ginell
  2. Up - Love to hear any reviews of this show. Couldn't get up to Austin with my kids this weekend after all, so I missed this and the Reptet show, unfortunately. Would have been a fun weekend of music!!
  3. Well, how was the show, Johnny? Anyone on the board able to go to see Reptet? And how'd you like Austin? Probably the least "Texan" place in Texas!
  4. Sorry to hear of your loss, Randy. Lean on your friends and family - they can be a great source of comfort. -Erik
  5. The real (?) finals should start on Sunday, between the Lakers and the Spurs. Completely different styles of basketball, but are there any better teams in the NBA than these two? If the winner of this series doesn't win the whole enchilada, I'll be very shocked!!
  6. I used to go to the Quad Cities on business from time to time. The Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival will be going on July 22-25 this year. Website for more Fest info. Other, non music interests might include the civil war cemetery on Rock Island itself, and I believe there's a small museum on the arsenal that's interesting as well. There used to be riverboat gambling on both the Illinois & Iowa sides of the river, though I believe the President riverboat is gone now. The Lady Luck may still be there, as well as the ones on the Illinois side. And the Amana Colonies are fairly close to Iowa City as well. An interesting place to visit, like stepping back in time.
  7. I think I agree in principal, but I have also been in stores where I will find things in other sections where I don't think they belong. I've found Anouar Brahem in new age, Bireli Lagrene in world music, and a few different hispanic jazz musicians in the Latin section of stores. It is certainly a hassle to flip past stuff you aren't interested in, but most stores don't seem to really care about what goes where, IMO, so if you don't check out the other sections, you may be missing out on some jazz you're actually looking for. I've also found things at Waterloo from time to time that I haven't found elsewhere, especially compared to what's available here in Corpus.
  8. That list never fails to make me smile. I posted it on the BNBB one time, and also here last year, on the thread about figuring out your blues name. -Erik (a.k.a. ol' Skinny Eyes Parker)
  9. They did as of January, I'm fairly certain they haven't changed their setup...
  10. one beer please! Now if you could change it to "Organissimo Rocks!", I think we've got a contendah for their next album cover.
  11. Here's a few off the top of my head.... Phil Collins - Against All Odds Phil Collins - Another Day in Paradise Phil Collins - I Wish it would Rain Down Phil Collins - Do You Remember Phil Collins - Don't Lose My Number Phil Collins - Something Happened on the Way to Heaven Phil Collins - Groovy Kind of Love Phil Collins - Both Sides of the Story Phil Collins - True Colors Phil Collins - You'll Be in my Heart Phil Collins - One More Night Hmmmm....I think there might be a pattern here, but I can't quite put my finger on it
  12. I don't have it yet, but have read some good reviews here and there. There's some interesting comments about Douglas in this thread... By the way, you're very lucky you have a radio station in your area that plays this kind of music!! My choices seem to be classic rock, top 40 (or whatever it's called these days), or tejano
  13. "Tavi Tankar"? ...hopefully this isn't too obscure of an SNL reference for most of us??

Clem - On a side note, Peggy Lee's corpse appreciates your interest in any royalty fees that may be due to her estate... Peggy Lee (aka Norma D. Egstrom) 5/26/1920 - 1/21/2002
  15. Just noticed the new Dave Douglas, "Strange Liberation" with Uri Caine & Bill Frisell, on the website. edit - they also added some of Pat Metheny's old ECM titles as well, if anyone's looking for 'em...
  16. Norah Jones' father? ...the sarcasm's baked in, dontcha know?
  17. I woke up to a huge thunderstorm and 10" inches of rain on Sunday morning. The street had about 2' of standing water in it until about 2:00 pm, so I couldn't even leave to go get the newspaper! There were alot of folks who thought they could get through the waters, only to stall their cars, and have to leave them until later in the day. Bet they won't try that again!

    It's Tuesday!

I can see it now, smack dab in the heart of KC: "Rooster Ties Fabulous Used Vinyl and CD Emporium" Note - pretend this isn't a picture of couw in his listening room with his puny television set, but some of the inventory in Rooster's store
  19. I don't agree with the sentiments that either of you seem to be stating in your posts. If all of the draftees starting having Manning's attitude, then I think it would spell doom for the NFL, which in my opinion is the best professional sports league in the U.S. Way too many athletes in the NFL (and other sports as well) think they're better than the team. It's all about me, me, me. I've got way more respect for the guys with the blue-collar attitudes, even when they're collecting million dollar paychecks. The guys who take less money to stay with a team they've played for, the guys who accept where they've been drafted and play as best they can. The guys that go to Cincinnati or apparently San Diego nowadays, or Jacksonville.
  20. I agree that the Giants gave up too much for Manning, who is going to have a hard time living up to expectations, I think. Plus Manning's attitude about the Chargers will hurt him, at least for a while, in the eyes of many fans. Looks like a selfish, spoiled brat who thinks he's above the rules to me. Rivers and Big Ben should be more effective than Manning, with less pressure on them to be superstars right from the start. I can't figure out the Cowboys' draft. To have their choice of the two best running backs available - Jackson or Kevin Jones - and trade away the pick for some lower round picks, plus a #1 next year makes no sense to me. In effect they just postponed their #1 pick this year until next, and gained a couple of lower round picks. I think it was a mistake. Gotta hope that Julius Jones turns out to be a great running back, and that they have a great first round next year, with two picks. Buffalo has a tough schedule this year, so their first rounder should be a top 10 pick at least.
  21. CONGRATULATIONS!!!! I've always seen my life as divided into two parts - before kids and after. And I wouldn't ever wish to go back to the pre-kid era. I never knew my heart could feel so much love for someone else! Welcome to the world, Zora!! I think she'd be a great honorary mascot for this bulletin board!
  22. Claude - Thanks for pointing that out. I guess I missed your comments in that thread somehow. If this edition doesn't have the mechanical whirling noise that Golden Arm mentioned, then I'm going to probably pick it up. Need the extra 16 tracks! -Erik
  23. a little Freudian slip of the keys, I assume?
