I remember Chuck posting the news recently that Wilbur's final recording was now available from The Wilbur Ware Institute but unfortunately I can't find the actual posting anywhere. Anyway, I've contacted the Institute and it will cost me $25 to have it sent to the UK. So, before I decide on whether to buy it, can anyone tell me whether it's a good buy......or not.

I've managed to locate this discography of Vanguard jazz & blues releases Vanguard Discography and I had no idea they'd released so many jazz albums. Why are so few of them available on CD, I wonder? I do have the "Ted Brown - Free Wheeling" but there are quite a few others on the list I would be interested in getting.

I recently came across this excellent album by Dave Burns on Vanguard Records (Warming Up!) which apparently has never been reissued on CD....why? Does anyone know what other jazz albums were released by Vanguard? I seem to remember owning one by Elvin Jones, way back when.

No, the CDs have never been released anywhere other than Japan. I've always loved these albums, especially the artwork and bought many of them when they were first released in Europe on vinyl back in the day. (What would they be worth now, I wonder?) I also stumbled across several of the CDs, including these two, in a small record shop near the Manchester Arnedale Centre many years ago and paid what I thought then was an exorbitant price for them. Looks like I got a bargain. Anyway, apart from the wonderful covers which can be found here: Marte Roling Fontana Covers the music's pretty good too!

I ordered a copy of the latest Horace Tapscott CD - "The Call" direct from the Nimbus West website at the beginning of the month and it's still not arrived. I've e-mailed them twice asking for confirmation that it's been dispatched but have had no reply. I know they're pretty much a one man band but still.... Has anyone else had problems with orders from them recently? I should say that I've ordered plenty from them in the past and never had a problem.

Picked up this recently: It's an early one by Fred (1988) and is excellent...was he less boring then?

He's still alive......that's a plus, I guess.

Does anyone know whether this release on Muse has ever been re-issued on CD? It's one of the few of my vinyl albums that I'd like to have a digital copy of.

My copy arrived this morning so I've only managed to play it once so far, but first impressions are very favourable. Like the earlier release "In His Good Time" on Ogun this is another 'live' recording but to my ears his playing sounds a bit more 'muscular' on this one. Since I only have these two albums of him playing solo piano I don't know whether his playing changed much over the ten years between the two concerts but it's obvious that the audience loved it. Whatever the provenance of the recording, the sound itself is excellent. Highly recommended. One minor quibble; the artwork consists of red lettering against a red background, which means the notes are very difficult to read.

"Like Someone In Love" ALWAYS hits the spot

I've just noticed that this has recently been released by the UK Fledg'ling Label. Chris McGregor - Sea Breezes His 1977 solo album "In His Good Time" was released earlier in the year by Ogun and was an absolute cracker. Let's hope this one is just as good.
