  1. I've just received details of the latest batch of re-issues on this label and there are some real "rare-as-hen's-teeth" albums included in it. They're all available through DustyGroove but many are already out of stock: Here's the list(ignore the first two by Dexter Gordon!): Jazzhus Records I bought the Dick Morrissey albums when they first became available sometime last year and they are very well done. Does anyone know anything about this label and whether the releases are available from a European source?

I do hope not! ......and the Dick Morrissey "Cape Wrath" is definitely NOT soul!

I don't know anything about "Another Sleeper" but "Cape Wrath" is a cracker. I got it as a CD-R directly from Dick Morrissey many years ago. No doubt the Vocalion release will sound better so I'll probably treat myself to an upgrade.
  4. I also bought a couple of CD-Rs from Neil just before he died. Obviously I should have added "A Symphony of Amaranths" to the list! BTW I see that his website includes a contact page. Has anyone used it to buy anything recently?
  5. I thought I'd resurrect this thread because I've recently had the opportunity to hear the album "A Symphony of Amaranths" by Neil Ardley and was astonished to find that it has never been re-issued on CD. Does anyone know why this is?
  6. The sound of Hot Rats is fantastic compared to my existing CD copy. It was like hearing it for the first time again. Pity I don't have my original vinyl to compare it against.
  7. Thanks, guys. I knew someone here would have the answer.
  8. I see this has become available on CD, released by one of those Andorran labels. Two questions: 1. Has anyone heard it and if so what's it like? 2. Has it ever had an 'official' release? I understand the original recording session was arranged for Verve but never issued...why?
  9. Whatever next....... No 'Strange Fruit' though....thank goodness?
  10. My favourite of all his albums. John Surman plays superbly throughout and, as I said earlier, it sounded so good on my vinyl release. It was recorded during the same period I used to see him playing live most weeks in London....those were the days!
  11. What's the sound like on this? Is is much better than the sound of the Polydor release which to my ears sounds flat & muffled. I really regret selling my LP on the Marmalade label - the sound of that was vastly superior to the sound of my CD.
  12. Pretty low-fi recording but there's something about this lady's voice that does it for me.
  13. They look tasty, Chuck. Looking forward to hearing both of them
  14. Why not just say "On the one hand"...or, OTOH, say "On the other hand"?.
  15. Does anyone know whether the problems with the David Murray Octet boxset are now over? ie if I order a copy from Amazon, will it be OK?
  16. Yep...I'll second that!
  17. Yes, from a quick browse through my copy it would seem that all of them are there..... plus lots more, of course.
  18. Of course...I guess I was thinking of him as leader. He never recorded as a leader on Blue Note, did he?
  19. My link I realise I should know this, but when did Jimmy Heath record for Blue Note? BTW how do you get the images to display here?
  20. I'm feeling a bit bruised at the moment because I recently shelled out for a Japanese re-issue of Gigi Gryce's "Reminiscin'" only to find out that it sounded just as bad as the copy I already had on one of those cheapo re-issue labels. Oh.... remember the days when major labels still reissued jazz music from master tapes?
  21. The reason I ask is because I have a copy of the Fresh Sound reissue, the sound of which is pretty poor, and I wondered how the sound of the Japanese reissue compared to that. I don't really want to shell out for a Japanese copy if it doesn't sound any better. Has anyone heard both reissues and can advise?
  22. Hans, did you ever manage to locate a copy of this? If you did, what's the sound like?
  23. My copy arrived direct from Hazel Miller this morning and it's an absolutely stunner. The track order has been changed from the original vinyl and now consists of the complete first set (tracks 1-8) and extracts from the second set (tracks 8-13). All the extra music on the CD release comes from the first set (five extra tunes) and all of this is as good as the music on the original release. In addition to the extra tunes, the CD also SOUNDS so good. My recollection of the original vinyl release was that it sounded rather "muddy" but the sound on this reissue is really sharp. OK, I'm a fan of Chris McGregor but, even so, this is a very impressive re-issue by Ogun Records.
  24. A sequel to her award-winning "Wolf Hall" and just as good.
