  1. Hey, Roger, thanks for that! Some primal stuff. I must have first seen that at a very young age. imdb and other sites I searched unfortunately have no credits for the soundtrack of "Gumbasia." I'd love to find out whose music that is. (I dig you avatar, BTW.)
  2. Allright! That band was one of my first jazz loves. Oscar Pettiford was the MAN!
  3. I have ALWAYS wondered about this! I assume, Chuck, you're talking about when you hear the opening bar or phrase of a track faintly just before the actual track starts. Where _does_ it come from? Always wondered about that myself.

Just got Coolin' myself. Nice session! I can't believe nobody mentioned his appearance on Monk's first Blue Note date. I'll be checking out some of the other sessions noted in this thread, though I already own several. The Weston disc that Spontooneous mentioned is a keeper.
  5. I haven't heard this yet, but I am a big fan of Pandelis Karayorgis. He's a world-class musician and one of the finest players on the Boston scene, in my opinion.
  6. Whoa! Nice site.
  7. Yes indeed. Glad I got mine.
  8. Shhh! Don't tell anyone about these!
  9. Now that's an obscure joke. I'm sort of amazed that I got it. I didn't even know I was missing a joke. MG http://www.amazon.com/Bring-Jubilee-Altern...e/dp/0345405021
  10. On his blog, Dave Kehr has several corrections to the article above: (Thanks to Larry Kart for turning me on to Kehr in the first place!)
  11. I hate to say it, but the Mosaic Django Reinhardt.
  12. Just got mine in the mail this morning, as a freebie from BMG Music Club -- so it's still available someplace. Listening for the second time today and loving it. Time to dig out the Billie sessions with the same personnel. Thanks to all for the recommendation.

  14. Good to see this thread revived. I'm a little worried about those movies, though. The books are so great that it feels like they could only ruin them.
  15. Roy Brawn?
  16. That is ONE DAMN FINE LOOKING meat grinder, my friend!
  17. Not so hard being the smartest guy on that island.
  18. Depends on who's in the next cubicle... Exactly----I was thinking I could be won over to this idea, but it would all depend on what the woman in question looked like. Hey, don't call me shallow, this is a RELIGIOUS issue! (Christopher Hitchens is seeming more and more reasonable.) Of course, if the workplace was ultra-religious, then you wouldn't see her face anyway.

    Up past her bedtime?
  20. Listening now, too. Yes and yes...
  21. As the Ramones sang, "Gimme, gimme shock treatment..."

  23. I agree, great series. As it turns out, I have more of these than I thought: Curtis Amy/Dupree Bolton - Katanga Chet Baker - Quartet with Russ Freeman Bob Brookmeyer - Traditionalism Revisited Teddy Edwards - Sunset Eyes Gerry Mulligan - Original Quintet with Chet Baker Bud Shank/Bob Cooper - Blowin' Country If I had to choose which one to get next it would definitely be: Jack Sheldon - Quartet/Quintet I probably listen to Katanga, Mulligan, and Baker/Freeman the most.
  24. And then the third disc starts off OK and then slides way, way down...
