  1. I'll emphatically second that!
  2. I like Elvis, too, especially early on, and I'd agree with what Allen wrote above, on the whole. The issue is definitely much more complicated than just one group stealing from another, that's for sure...
  3. I've never seen this on CD, and I spend way to much time in used CD places. I'll keep an eye out for this from now on.
  4. I had a similar problem, Paul. I couldn't remember if I had, and I hadn't!
  5. I made that same observation to my girlfriend, who was two years older than your wife at the time. It didn't go over too well... she's now my ex-girlfriend.

    Sex Mob

I think that the records are okay, but I was truly impressed when I saw them live. These guys killed, despite a thin house. I agree that Bernstein is a real wit, as well as a nice guy. Not to mention an excellent musician, as are Wollesen and Krauss. Scherr, unfortunately, didn't make the gig. I will definitely see them again the next chance I get. Here's the review I wrote for a local rag (only my second article for them). I didn't get much space to say what I had to say, but I tried my best:
  7. These clips are the shit! I've seen them excerpted in Gary Giddins's Armstrong documentary. Beautiful stuff. Is here somewhere to get all three of them unedited? Armstrong was so spontaneous that it's almost painful to watch him try to lip-synch, as he was forced to do in other contexts. The Danes were very smart to film him live, providing us with a priceless document of him in his prime. In my memory, that clip of him singing "Dinah," with his eyes closed and as far from "mugging" as can be imagined, is one of the most beautiful things ever commited to film.

    KING JAZZ label

I bought some Armstrong on the King Jazz label many moons ago, and I agree about the "edgy" sound. I got rid of them. You're working for Shout now, Alan?
  9. Mine, too. As far as I know, never made it to CD.
  10. What Spontooneous said. I always assumed that Williams claimed rights to "Round Midnight" because he was the bandleader who "sponsored" its introduction. On the other hand, Ellington no doubt copped a few licks from Cootie over the years.... And Monk borrowed a few licks himself, it must be said. What goes around, comes around. I'm profoundly glad that all of these men contributed what they did the music.
  11. I bought That's the Way I feel Now on vinyl when it first came out. A number of years later I sold it. I bought it again about a year or so ago at a local (Boston-area) used record store. For $4.99. A good reason to avoid Amazon, etc...
  12. Yes, indeed. Happy Birthday!
  13. As long as he wasn't taking the Elvis clothes to bed, I think she was off-base... If he was, well...
  14. Have you seen The Red Circle? Also essential Melville, also out on Criterion. I saw it on the big screen when it was re-released a few years ago. I also own the Criterion. Time to watch it again!
  15. Which five?
  16. I'm just glad that Albertson's back.
  17. Amen to that!
  18. Ill!
  19. http://www.sphericalpanoramas.com/rodia.html Scroll right, left, up or down (with your mouse), and zoom in or out (with the + and - sign buttons in the lower left, or the ctrl and shift keys on the left also zoom in and out). COOL!! Cool! I believe that Mingus wrote about Simon Rodia and his towers in Beneath the Underdog. But I can't find it, since the damn book has no index...
  20. H.B. to A.B.!
  21. Keeping it light tonight: goat cheese omelette and a salad.
  22. Are these videos available to the average schmo??
  23. Or are there too many inaccuracies for comfort's sake?
