  1. Forgot to mention: some beautiful organ textures on this stuff! How is that other WB album? (There were only two.)
  2. Nice to see these pop and country writers mentioned. I can't believe that more people haven't mentioned Brian Wilson! Up there in quality, if not number of cover versions, with Lennon/McCartney and Stevie Wonder. Of late, I've been partial to the songwriting of Fountains of Wayne and Stephin Merritt (Magnetic Fields, etc.) Both write songs that could stand up quite well on their own apart from their originator's renditions; in Merritt's case, perhaps stand up even better.
  3. I'm not familiar with many of the tunes on the second entry above, but the first is basically Sly & the Family Stone's 1979 comeback lp Back on the Right Track(Warner Bros. Records), with a different track order and one additional tune. This was probably the best of the later Sly records, an Indian summer of sorts. I like "Remember Who You Are," a lot too, Noj. But my favorite track is probably "The Same Thing (Makes You Laugh, Makes You Cry)." There's some serious funk on this joint, easily his best since Fresh from 1973. Sly Stone is one of my favorite musicians of all time regardless of genre, and one of the top influences on my now-dormant, 20 year stint singing, writing songs, and playing in bands.
  4. I should be receiving this sometime this week and will definitely report back.
  5. Just finished England's Dreaming: Anarchy, Sex Pistols, Punk Rock, and Beyond by Jon Savage. A fine, thoughtful history of an explosive, watershed period in rock music, written by an eyewitness.
  6. Wein's extensive collection of contemporary and 20th Century African-American Art is currently on display at the Boston University Art Gallery. This is just down the street from me and I still haven't checked it out. Thanks for the reminder.
  7. Paging BruceH!

    John Mayer Blues

When he sings the blues does he sound as creepy as he does singing his pop songs? Is it just me, or is anyone else creeped-out by his singing?
  9. Lots of stuff here of interest to members of this board, starting with the complete Atlantic Ray Charles and Coltrane boxes. I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on the Richard Pryor box myself. Been waiting for a good price on that for a long time.
  10. Can I come over for dinner?
  11. It's a pretty liberal group, but somehow that topic hasn't come up yet. Odd.... Frankly, I'd be a bit disturbed if it had come up. Oddly enough, the only other literary ursine/human sex scene I am aware of was penned by none other than (so-called) conservative Scooter Libbey. In his case, however, it was non-consensual. Is that the conservative part?
  12. Just bought this from CDUniverse and will receive it next week. I can hardly wait. I'm a Griffin fan (but not fanatic). Somehow I missed out on this album until now. I have many fond memories of Griffin's Boston area gigs in the 1980s.
  13. When I first read the headline I thought it said MARITAL ARTS.
  14. Pan seared Cervena venison medallions, seasoned with juniper berries, salt, and pepper. Sides: broccoli rabe sauteed with garlic and red pepper flakes and a baked potato with truffle oil. All served with a sauce made by deglazing the pan with wine. The remaining wine accompanied the meal: 2004 Volpe Pasini Dal Pedunculo Rosso (Venezia Giulia IGT) Not bad
  15. June Christy re-made her own Something Cool when Stereo came in...
  16. Inspired by several threads here, I pulled the trigger on these today: The Fabulous Treniers - The Hoss Allen Sessions Johnny Griffin - Way Out Luckey Roberts and Willie "The Lion" Smith - Harlem Piano Should be here next week. Can't wait!
  17. Wow! You all make this sound so great that I'll have to get it. I love Griffin and Ware (and PJJ, of course). This baby is moving right to the top of the list.
  18. Happy Birthday, Jim! Thanks for all the great posts. We all look forward to the next 50 years of Sangrey wit and wisdom! (edited for spelling.)
  19. Got mine a few days ago, but really only used them for any length of time last night. The sound is pretty good. And they accomodate my relatively small ears comfortably enough. That cord-winding thing is actually pretty handy, too. so so far.
  20. Another vote for Zabor's The Bear Comes Home. Beautifully written, and as much about identity and the artistic life as about jazz (oh, yeah, and bears, too...) Your group needs to have a tolerance for explicit ursine/human sex scenes, however.
  21. I would have figured Scrooge McDuck to be much higher on the list.
  22. I've found that the most useful part of Wikipedia is the links to other sites included in the articles.
  23. That's a little scary....
  24. Looks like a table-top diorama to me. Or a Russian train-set layout?
