  1. I thought of 'em. Does that count? Still, those have to be nicknames. And THELONIOUS SPHERE MONK trumps them all...
  2. This thread makes my brain hurt. Also RRK on Roy Haynes' Out Of The Afternoon (which happens to be this weeks AOTW! ) ← Yeah, that one! How about Alan Dawson on anything?

My brother, January 9, shares a birthday with those peas in a pod Richard Milhous Nixon and Joan Baez.
  4. I've been planning to attend this show. Does anyone know anything about this "young sextet"?
  5. There's no doubt in my mind that Thelonious Sphere Monk is the coolest name in and out of jazz. Bonus points for the fact that it's his true, given name as well. Most of the other candidates are nicknames. A good one for sure. How about Attila Zoller? And Django's a cool name if there ever was one.
  6. Listened to this again last night. I can't say I recommend it. Tony belts too much given the intimate setting. Just not my cup of tea, I guess.
  7. Any good? ← Good so far. It seems like it's going to alternate his pop music reviews from NYRB with reminiscences of growing up in the 50s and 60s as part of a musical family: grandfather former dance-band leader, father NY top 40 DJ, one brother a Classical fanatic, the other a bebop aficionado. I'll let you know how it goes.
  8. It's in the issue that came the other day. Nice review, Nate. ← I'll second that, excellent review.. I've really been enjoying the first Hewitt disc, and will surely purchase the others in due time. Thanks to Jim Sangrey for the original heads up!
  9. I've got the 2-CD reissue of this. It's perfect. Original LP on CD1 with all the alts on the 2nd CD. And the alts on THIS particular album are all master take worthy and wonderful. ← All the alts on a 2nd CD----that sounds great. All the alternates ARE worthy on this, but for godsake, give us the album first THEN the alternates. That's all I ask. This is another thing about Mosaic...if you wait long enough, most of their sets will be commercially issued by SOMEbody, and these days it often doesn't take too long. ← Sad but true. I was just thinking the other day that the original Mosaic mission is being carried out better by the Select series these days. All the early Mosaics I bought (Monk, Brown, Nichols, etc.) were pretty short compared to the massive sets they put out now. The selects are similar in scope to those early Mosaics, except the artists, worthy as they are, are less epochal.
  10. A friend gave this to me for x-mas last year, the 20 bit version. I appreciate both men, but am not a huge fan of either. Will pull it out and listen again...
  11. Anyone?
  12. Richard Davis always stands out. I'm a big fan of his. I've had Nefertiti on vinyl for years. It very good, though not great Hill. Well worth it for Hill followers, or Davis fans. I've been thinking of getting Hommage. You make it sound so good, fk, that I'll have to move it up towards the top of my list.

    Howard McGhee

Well, if you don't have any talent at all with words, then the work goes a lot quicker.
  14. Maybe that Social Security crisis won't be as bad as some of us thought.
  15. From the Dusty site: Sounds interesting. I've never heard of the existence of these tapes. Anyone know the deal with this RLR label? What about this one, same label?
  16. Listening to this right now: My favorite jazz version would have to be Ella & Louis. You all have got me interested in checking out the Bill Potts and Mundell Lowe versions.
  17. I've been an XTC fan since Drums and Wires was released in the U.S. while I was in college. I immediately went out and bought their first two records, which were only available as imports. WhenBlack Sea came out I listened to it constantly for a while. Might still be my favorite. I liked parts of English Settlement when that came out in the U.S. in a truncated one-LP version, but even that shortened release seemed to have a bit of filler. I lost interest in them after I graduated from college and my jazz obsession took over almost entirely for the rest of the 1980s, or as I call them, "the Early Mosaic Years." I've regained interest in rock over the last ten years, and going back to XTC has been rewarding. I missed out on Skylarking during my years away from rock. I got a Toshiba-EMI mini-LP format CD of that last year and WOW! Sounds like some kind of classic. It fit right in with some of the other rock records I'd missed and had been catching up with: Love's Forever Changes, The Zombies's Odyssey and Oracle. In the wake of inhaling the two Rhino Nuggets boxes, I even bought The Dukes of Stratosphear Chips From the Chocolate Fireball, which is a hoot and a blast. I understand that "Vanishing Girl" will be making an appearance on the forthcoming third Nuggets, which covers the 70s/80s garage rock revival that was largely inspired by the original Lenny Kaye Nuggets LP compilation.
  18. I bought this one a couple of months back. This thread is the perfect excuse to pull it out and really listen hard!

    Black & Blue

I'll second that. I need more Hines and more Johnson in my collection, and this sounds like a great way to go!
  20. I was born in Oakland California, and I don't use the dishwasher, even though there's one in my apartment. Since I'm single, it would take a while for me to build up a load worth running, and I don't like the idea of the dirty dishes just sitting there in the thing. If I had a family, though, I could imagine it coming in handy.
  21. Just finished: Hellfire -- Nick Tosches (Jerry Lee Lewis Bio) Now reading: Geoffrey O'Brien -- Sonata for Jukebox: Pop Music, Memory, and the Imagined Life
  22. Today so far: Mosaic Select: Randy Weston -- discs 1, 2, & 3
  23. I'd like to know more about this, too.

    Howard McGhee

I had a girlfriend who made me stop playing the Capitol Hawkins/McGhee record, because she hated the trumpet playing. She pretty much hated any trumpet playing, though. I also remember her saying that she couldn't stand Shakespeare, because the language was "pretentious" and she hated all that "kings and queens stuff."

    Howard McGhee

This is just damn great music, even if McGhee is a bit too brash on some of the ballads. A great band, and very well recorded. A favorite Hawkins date. As for the Savoy Maggies, I never warmed up to them either, and sold the LPs ageds ago. I'd be willing to try them again. Perhaps Classics is the way to go.
