Mosaic Sets for Sale or Trade
Soul Stream replied to pawprint's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Still wonder how all these Mosaics are floating around w/o artwork, boxes, ect. Seems when I bought mine from Mosaic, they came in boxes w/booklets and artwork. -
Kill me if you want to. I like the group better with George Coleman. Wayne Shorter never floated my boat the way George did/does. Sometimes I wonder if Miles had eyes on Wayne more for his writing, something Coleman isn't known for. We all know Miles needed writers.

Yeah,,,it's wierd. The release date is 2/14 everywhere else. Look at DG yesterday and it's A#1 in the New Releases. Ordered it last night and got a shipping confirmation today. Once again, DG stumps us all.
-
Just got my order into the bastards...seems they're the only ones who have it in stock. The new water reissues of Say It Loud by Lou Donaldson and See What Tommorrow Brings by Mcduff...got 'em both. THE BASTARDS!

Yes, the BN LP does not have those tracks. You've GOT to get the CD which is awesome (and I rarely use that word, but it fits here).

hmmm..... that's weird about the living alone part...also, Joey lives in Arizona too. Wonder if that's just a coinsidence. Looking forward to hearing it. Always a curious meeting of the two because it's like listening to Jimmy in 2004 and in 1964 all at the same time.
-
Pete will know that's for sure! (all that said, Jimmy Smith at 50% (if that's the case which I don't know) is still something to gawk at)
-
Haven't seen Lon's comments, and I'm no expert on this recording and it's various incarnations. Don't have another version besides an old LP copy...however. Bought it yesterday, and lOVE it...maybe it's just the music, but I thought the whole thing sounded wonderfully fresh and alive.
-
don't know if i'll actually get this or not. liked the live one o.k.,,,but doesn't get a lot of play for whatever reasons. i'm more interested in how jimmy sounds, that "black cat" cd they came out with last year made jimmy sound as if he might be sick or weak. wondered if he was faring better these days.

thanks randy for the link. wonderful interview.... i guess we shouldn't bellyache so much about the music business after hearing scott's story.

hmmm...i heard it and didn't dig the direction. exploring the blues in this quasi-abstract-blues/rock guitar way, to me at least, equals destroying the blues with berkely school of music-type feeling. not much there. wish he'd play some james p johnson stride like he can and add his thing to that instead...and explore the blues is that manner, it would mean more in the long run i think. this is just another 'sexy' release that'll be forgotten over time in my estimation. of course, i could be wrong about everything.

Some pretty great stuff! I wonder what the chances of for $100 bucks winning one of those little scraps of coltrane paper or a miles' squiggle.

Sparky J's in Newark was a gig he played for sometime in the 80's. By the 90's with the organ revival, his career was jump started again and he enjoyed several trips to europe and some higher profile stuff here in the states. He regularly played The Jazz Bakery and was a fixture at Smoke in NYC, among other places. Gigs weren't as plentiful as they should have been, but he did keep busy, although I think the last couple years it had slowed down a bit from what it had been in the mid-90's at the height of the Acid Jazz movement.

I have zero Lonnie Smith and I have no idea if I'd like it. I have enough Jimmy Smith, so I'll pass on his title also. That leaves Tyner and Oblique which are behind the others I will get. You might consider the Lonnie. It does have Lee Morgan and Fathead Newman as the horn section, if that adds any attraction to you. It's a nice date and different from the usual organ stuff, at least imho.
-
hey...didn't mention lonnie's "think"
-
Joey DeFrancesco? I love Joey, though. He's a bad dude. Like Frank Morgan told a detractor..."Hey, you think it's EASY playing like Charlie Parker!" Jimmy can act like he's the best, because he is and always has been the greatest organist in history. Although like everything else in life, after listening to the greatest (Jimmy Smith), it's still nice to hear just great (Patton, matter of fact, sounds better many times).
-
You be correct. I think (hope) KB added 1 and 2 to come up with 3. Nice double. Yes, THAT would make a nice Vol. 3. (I had suggested at the organ Vol 1 and 2 when Kevin was taking titles to give to Michael Cuscuna...so of course I'm now taking 100% credit B-) )
-
B y the way...THINK!...YEAAAAHHHH BABY!
-
To my knowledge...there is no "Jimmy Smith at the organ vol. 3", just 1 & 2...am I wrong?
-
I thought the quote was "Average, not dynamite." I saw it in a jazz book with an organ section believe it or not. Pretty cool book, I also remember Smith saying that Don Patterson was the only one on his level...somthing like that. Whatever the case. One time Patton and I were listening to "The Sermon" and Patton said "Man, I wish I had talent like that!" That blew me away. Look. Jimmy always had the mostest and Patton or McDuff, ect. would be the first to tell you. However, for the rest of us mortals, Patton RULES!!!!!

she think's she's hot but hot she's not.

Yes, I think "Down To Earth" is an apt description of John. Another thing, somebody in some liner notes wrote Patton was like a "Black Soulwick." I think that's the most dead-on thing anybody could have every said to describe him. John was in person EXACTLY like his music. His speech pattern sounded like his phrasing on the hammond. His hip slang he used were like the slick little turnbacks he played. He was the embodiment of jazz organ. Man, when he sat at the organ...he oooozzzed authenticity, hipness and artistry. I realized immediately, you can cop his licks, but that's about it....he's playing who he is. A real master with his own identity on the organ. That's almost impossible to do.
-
Wow. Guess I'll have to be the lone dissent. Not to give anything away, but it was like watching two different movies. Neither of which I thought was particularly convincing. Although Yahoo movie gives it an A critics and B+ user. I get the feeling I'm 1/10 of 1% that didn't dig it.

Does age matter for a jazz artist?
Soul Stream replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I think jazz artists in middle age have the hardest time. Not young enough to be fresh and exciting. Not old enough for the "old veteran-they don't play like that anymore-factor" to kick in yet.
