  1. ...great show. ...oh and it was 7 bucks. The most amazing trumpet player I've ever seen live. Amazing. More later....
  2. That's one trick I'd love to learn. . Anyway, I think after Coltrane and Miles, that type of inner-searching style that remains most popular even today. The sort of playing Stitt, Ammons, ect. (eric alexander anyone?) do gets a bad rap. This sort of attitude drives me insane. An arguement can be made, well made imho, that the playing of Trane has the same sort of sameness as well. "Inside" playing at it's best. Nothing wrong with being "inside." Matter of fact, everyone is so "outside" now, nobody's left inside.
  3. For those who are fans of this album. I suggest getting the Ralph Gleason t.v. show "Jazz Casual" with the same lineup as the album doing The Bridge, God Bless The Child, ect. Wonderful "LIVE" t.v. of Rollins and co. from this same period. They open with The Bridge and it is a real mind blower...
  4. A friend of mine who plays Bari Sax (he used to play with Horace Silver), well, his ultimate goal is to play BASS saxophone. He wants one very badly. Says he played one in an NYC music store...$23,000! Wow. I'd love to hear one though.
  5. The local Tower was out of this, so I got a raincheck. I've been listening to the sound clips on the site, and it really sounds amazing. I have NO Giuffre, but the combo of Jimmy, Ray Brown and Jim Hall...well...it just seems like it should be good. Does anyone have this yet?
  6. Is this a remastered version? Or just more bits (like Chuck mentioned no better sound there)
  7. Tom Harrell is playing with the Gerry Gibbs (son of Terry) trio tonight at the Elephant Room here in Austin. As usual, there's been absolutely no advertising of the event. So, I thought I'd alert anybody who might be interested. I may make it myself, but a last minute gig may have foiled my plan. I'd love to see Harrell. Especially right here in my hometown for 10 bucks.
  8. Thanks Lon. I've really been diggin' New York Jazz. And after looking at the Mosaic site for disc. infor, the set looks like more of the same. Which, like you mentioned, is good and bad. Maybe I'll do what I always say I'll do for once. That is, enjoy the album I have instead of rushing for more right away. Think I'll let this sink in. But it has made me decide to get the Mosaic, although not right away. Think I'll enjoy what I got. There's so much to like on NY Jazz, that'll it'll take me a few months just to absorb that. Thanks again Lon.
  9. Lon, haven't heard a lot about the Stit Mosaic other than it's quite a bit of music. I've been on the fence about getting it for some time. However, New York Jazz has me thinking I might make the plunge. Any thoughts? Thanks for the help.
  10. I like this one a lot as well. A Caddy For Daddy, the song, is one of the best BN boogaloos ever. Anyway, I'm glad that I actually have this AOW in my collection already.
  11. Funny, I was editing my initial post to correct the title at the same time you were correcting me! Sorry to have gotten it wrong. Thought about deleting the thread and starting again, but decided against it. I hope people realize "New York Jazz" is the topic. Anyway, it has Ray Brown, Jo Jones, and Jimmy Jones on piano. Here's another one where I STRONGLY disagree with the AMG. They call it a very mediocre session for Stitt, nothing special. 3 stars. Anyway, his playing is so tremendous on here. At least to my ears. This is what jazz sounds like. This album.
  12. This is really called Sonny Stitt's "New York Jazz." Another home run for the Verve digipak reissue. This is maybe some of the best Stitt I've ever heard. Buy this now and don't worry about it. He tears it up with the rhythm section just keeping it grooving, Stitt does what he does best. Play over the changes like a mf.
  13. I can't get enough of this cd since buying it. 5 stars.
  14. On the flip side. In the early 50's, Martin Banks told me he and James Clay were harrassed by L.A. cops on their walk home from the gig many nights. Forced to take out and assemble their instruments and play, to "prove" they hadn't stolen them.
  15. On the contrary, I've always liked Rudy's bass sounds and soundscape placement. Maybe in this day and age it might sound low for some ears. But we live in a super-bass age of ridiculousness. And I agree with the horrible Buster Williams, Ron Carter pickup-d/i sounds of the 70's. It stinks (Of course everyone has this sound now, horrible) For a great bass sound listen to Bruce Swiedens' handling of the bass on "Here is Billy Mitchell." Also Rudy's magic works well for Paul Chambers on "The Sonny Clark Trio" session. I haven't played a session with a mic'ed bass ever I think. Horrible.
  16. The Quest was available through e-music. Unfortunately, my credit card expired and they cancelled my subsription before I had a chance to download.(think I'll let my sub. expire ) Anyway, now that this Mal Waldron title is on my radar screen, thanks to Chuck. I am going to pick it up and will post my thoughts, albeit late, in the near future. I am a little surprised myself that this AOW got so little action. Especially since it was picked by Chuck, obviously it's musical merit must be very high. I'm glad Jsngry had such a thougtful review. I really enjoyed it a lot. Also, I'd REALLY like to hear Chuck's play by play of the album.
  17. Just picked up "This is Billy Mitchell" a Verve Digipak (9.99 at local Tower). I can't recommend this one more. It's absolutely mesmerizing. Mitchell is somewhat along the lines of Gene Ammons. Billy's version of "Sophisticated Lady" is worth 10 bucks alone. The whole album is beautiful. For those wary of organ, don't be. Organ on only 3 cuts and it's very low and tasteful...just background. Bruce Swedien is the original engineer on this one, and as usual, the sound he gets is impeccable. Get it if you can....
  18. are you talking about the unreleased takes? if so, how have you heard them?
  19. Is the Colpix stuff coming out under the domestic Verve umbrella? Or is this import stuff?
  20. Is it me, or is Christina's new sexy vibe just turning into a sad Marilyn Manson thing....
  21. The Hulk character looks silly on the t.v. commercials. like frankenstein, the jolly green giant and daffy duck all rolled into one. where's beavis and butthead when you need their opinion. i think it would go something like this.... butthead: this move...uuugh...like...sucks. beavis: yeah...it's like...the jolly green turd or something.
  22. ...yeah, this is some really funny, funny stuff. i've been a fan since day 1. my favorite skit....snoop, substitute teacher.
  23. great to see you back around Shrdlu. . I have to say my favorite version is the Sonny Clark. Plus, just a side note, the RVG of Sonny Clark Trio SOUNDS AMAZING. One of Rudy's best imho.
  24. If "Wadin'" isn't a five star performance, I don't know what is! Have to disagree with him on that one. Of course he's a right on about Stanley. George Tucker kills on that record.
  25. I am sure when you where a kid there was something that got you just as excited as these kids do over Harry Potter. Every generation has it's version and I am not limiting this to books. You're just showing your age. but i'm 12 years old.
