where can you get one? are they expensive? -
I've got an only existing copy of music on a CD-R...I put it in my computer to transfer to iTunes and left the room. Somehow, the CD wouldn't transfer but kept turning and turning for an hour! Now, when I try to play it...my 2 different CD players say "no disk."!!!! Upon looking at the surface of the dist it looks like a thousand tiny little scratches made a circle around the inner ring of the CD. Is there any saving this thing. I'm gonna be crushed if I lose this music as there's no other copy existing in the world, it's be gone for good.

Poor Bill Gates Sad He's So Rich

Like Jimi Hendrix said..."Sometimes, the more money you have, the more blues you can play." -
Don't know how he played, but he LOOKS cool. I think I saw Miles with those same shades on in the 70's Yeah, I'm a Cecil fan for sure.

I heard again recently that this was coming out, and soon. Anybody else hear this?

Great remarks by all and especially Larry Kart. The notion that music changes and forges ahead....that's something all musicians deal with. It's interesting to hear how Perkins felt his playing was marginalized by people like Rollins. Coltrane and Sonny left a lot of guys on the side of the road. It's tough to be immediately outdated. I remember Art Pepper going through the same thing in his book. It's not until history proves to us that these players all had something to say, but I'm sure it's a sinking feeling when you're getting your Prez on and the you hear Way Out West or something....

have the sides w/George Coleman and Kirk Lightsey & Roy Brooks w/Chet Baker ever been issued on CD. The album I have is "Smokin" but I know there are 4 or so others under similar titles. Have they every been compiled onto several cds or issued seperately?

Anybody got one for sale or a line on one.

Good one, yes Hank does solo and nicely. Thanks.

I've got that, but my issue doesn't have "How Deep Is The Ocean" on it. However, SPeak Low is uptempo on that. Thanks for the recommendations.

I love hearing late period Hank play a standard ballad. However, seems like most of the ballad playing he did in this period are of originals. Can anyone help me find Hank playing standard ballads in his late Blue Note period, either on his or other's albums? Thanks.

Can't wait.

Lee Morgan bio

As soon as I hear the word "culture" I have my doubts. Sometimes these authors (like the last Prez biography) have more interest in telling us the social ramifications of the music. To me, an accurate portrayal of the life and music should be the goal. That said, can't wait. -
Music you've really been digging lately.

I've been listening to Hank Mobley's "The Turnaround" a ton lately. Always has been a favorite, but it's really hitting home lately. The older I get, the more I appreciate Hank. -
I'd definately put on some of Lou Donaldson's boogaloo beats, any of them would do but top of my list would be either Alligator Boogalo or Midnight Creeper or Brother Soul. Perhaps a Lonnie Smith like "Play It Back" from Live at Club Mozambique. And some Charles Earland, perhaps the title cut from Black Talk. I might keep it on the funkier side since that's where's he coming from initially and these guys are the fountainhead of organ funk. Once he here's Earland or Lonnie Smith burning it up, they others will sound like fake-funk.

Yes, that audience did exist very much so at that time. Too bad that audience has slowly faded. They were a great group of people to play to. Amazing to think how much these everyday people loved and KNEW the music. A much simpler time when music was held in higher regard by the communities that fostered the different scenes.

I'm not sure Malaco was looking back. That production on that stuff is very era-dependent to the 70's/80's. As well as the instrumentation. Sure it's classic R&B and Blues...but those Malaco sides don't take any production cues from the 50's or 60's. Plus the beats and stuff are of the times. That market existed in that era very much so, cause I played many gigs to those audiences in Dallas during the late 80's and 90's. Z.Z Hill was god back then. And Jim, I do agree you have to absorb and then do something yourself. Mere imitation certainly isn't the end goal for sure (but after hearing a lot of "originality" sometimes I'm not so sure. )

So I'm searching iTunes music store and find a totally unavailable title from Spainish jazz guitarist Ximo Tebar done seemingly in the 90's with obscure jazz organist Lou Bennet and Idris Muhammed (only $5.94 for the download). It's titled Hellow Mr. Bennet. A little live thing recorded when Lou was living in Spain right before his death. Sure, he's forced to play a cheezy Hammond clone, but what he does with the basslines is freaking MIND BLOWING SHIT for any organist. He's got a string bass sound going. And well, sure the crappy vibes sound (I actually think it's kinda cool) ain't great and the organ sound ain't happening. But it's a rare chance to hear this guy play and I'm really glad I found it.

I didn't listen to the samples, but...to chime in on the race thing. I've noticed that if you're black it's o.k. to go back and do songs done originally by black guys 50 years ago. But if you're white, it's not your heritage, so it's phoney. I don't know, it's a little racist imho. The music's out there for everyone at this point. Not sure if an 18 year old black kid from the suburbs has any more claim to black roots music than and 18 year old white kid or latino kid. Same reason Charlie Pride wasn't really accepted with open arms by C&W fans initially (or ever really you could argue). Some of this arguement is a little self serving I'd admit. But I would argue the same would have to be said for Sangrey playing music spearheaded by Alberty Ayler/Coltrane or Jim Alfredson singing a Ray Charles tune...is all that phoney too? To some people yes. I think that's a drag.

I've never seen KT88s. What's the story on them?
