Were either of them musicians? Because there is (or has been) a jazz musician named Hugh Walker playing in Oklahoma fairly recently. And I know what you mean about cats turning up. When I herd James Moody at some club in NYC back in 1980 and the drummer waqs introduced as Al Harewood, I was astounded. Thought he was dead or something. Just goes to show you how narrow the radar screen is capable of being. I never did call the second guy, since his location in the state seemed like an unlikely one for a musician, but you never know. The guy I did call said "I'm an old man and I never did play no drums."

I thought he was from the DC area 'cause I heard him there and Shirley mentioned "starting him out" or something like that. It was obviously a "reunion". Tonight while reading the liners of Braith's "Soul Stream" I discovered the following line: Hugh Walker, who completes the foursome, is a 20 year old drummer from Oklahoma. He has been playing professionally for five years and came to New York recently. I called one of the two "Hugh Walker" listings in Oklahoma...not the guy. Wish he could be found. I'll ask George if he knows anything about him. Many times, so many years have passed that these guys just lose touch, ect....but you never know. Who would have thought Ben Dixon was still in Brooklyn all these years.

Jim, I think you would really, really, really dig Boptronics. Moreso than Turn Of The Century. Just my gut feeling....so paypal away! Yeah, Boptronics I think is his most fully realized work so far. I find Boptronics to be in line with some of the things Horace Silver was doing with the "United States Of Mind" as far as voices, harmonies and themes. Although with an admittedly more home-made vibe. No big budgets for George. But I think we can all take a cue from a guy who's imagination knows no bounds and uses what he has to realize his music. George plays all the instruments. (P.S. he's got a new one coming out soon that will be hand's down his best imho).

Yeah...and that organist is Billy Gardner reincarnate! Those guys really have Braith's BN recordings in their veins! (and yes Lon, I am a non-recovering Braith-o-holic) If I were to buy just one (for now), would the Barcelona disc be the best choice? I might go for the Bop Bap Boom CD...it's got more of a variety of stuff on it. Some live organ stuff with Detroit guys who play with James Carter...some home recordings by George ect.... It's like a good sampler.

Thanks everyone for the support. George told me he had sold one CD so far, so we've already quadrupled sales at this point with Dave's order. Anyway, yeah just listen to George play the head of "Just Friends" and I think you get the idea....he's definately been doing his own thing, and for a long time now. It's really amazing to hear what George comes up with versus the sanitized jazz we're used to being force fed. He's old school when old school meant having your own sound!

Rhyne is simply one of the greatest organists when it comes to having the ability to play tunes. Any tune, any tempo...and say something of great depth. Not appreciated like he should because he doesn't lay down the heavy funk for the organ crowd and a lot of true jazz lovers don't dig organ. That said, he's really, really, really one of the best that every laid hands on the organ. Don't miss him if you get the chance. I treasure the one time I saw him (w/Mark Whitfield on guitar no less.) Great pics too!

Hey ya'll, just talked to George and he told me he just got four of his self-made CDs up for sale on CD BABY. I think the sound samples are a couple minutes each, so lots to check out. Anyway, check it out!!!

I got this reiusse Atlantic LP of Warne Marsh with Paul Chambers and Paul Motion. I don't know squat about Warne other than a lot of guys on this board dig him. That said, I like this album quite a bit after my first listen...and Paul Chambers really sounds great.

That's right, neither are on Muzart.

I do know that Hugh Walker and George Brown were Patton's two drummers he played most with in the late sixties as a working unit. Either with Grant Green, and for a time Harold Alexander (although their live playing relationship was in 1968 only). Great drummer no doubt. I'd love to find out if he lives in Oklahoma.

Music In The Key Of Clark by John Hicks is a great recent trio recording. It's the music of Sonny Clark.
-
Strange, I went to sleep last night listening to "No More Goodbyes" from the Hank Mobley "Hi Voltage" LP on which Hicks plays.

Yes, Happy Birthday Jimmy. Listening to his "What's New" CD with Gene Ludwig right now. GREAT recording. Of course, I have many classic albums with Jimmy Ponder. My favs being Patton's "That Certain Feeling", Lou Donaldson's "Mr. Sing A Ling" and Stanley Turrentine's "Common Touch."

They said they shipped mine Friday. Usually Mosaic shipping is really fast. Guess not these days, still ain't got it. What method do they ship now? I would think it would be there by Thursday or Friday. I got the notice on Friday but I don't think they shipped until Monday. Since I'm only one state way, 1 day is the norm. Yours probably also went out Monday. Too bad since they emailed me that it was shipping Friday. Used to be Friday meant Friday and not Monday at Mosaic.
-
Yeah, what's DHL's schedule? Isn't it at least 3 working days? I mean...Friday, Monday, Tuesday? I'm not even counting Saturday or Sunday....this sucks.

There's certain guys that have obviously devoted a huge chunk of their lives to learning this instrument, Tony's one of those guys for sure. If you get a chance....there's a good interview with Tony in this online magazine called B3 Player (the only drag it's 10 bucks to download, thought I'd give it a shot...definately NOT worth 10 bucks). But anyway, this interview Tony doesn't sugarcoat anything. Tells about his coming up the business and how he was totally out of it until he started a jam band thing when organs came back and how it evolved from that. Pretty cool to hear the real story and not just "I met Jimmy Smith when I was 2 years old and now I can play my ass off." The stuff you usually get in the magazines.

I've learned long ago there is no "best" (o.k., we all really know that)....I mean...I want to hear all the new guys...Tony, Joey, Goldings, Jim Alfredson, Adam Scone, Mike LeDonne, and the list continues...along with the established legends McDuff, Young, Patton, Patterson, McGriff, Groove, Scott, Lonnie, ect... It's ALL good. I love hearing what everyone has to say, because the Hammond Organ itself has so much to say itself and I look at all these players as helping it say it!

I'd actually like to hear THAT record! -
I enjoy the Gibbs project quite a bit as well. But, I think these are just great musicians from 2 different generations. The Hutcherson/Defrancesco project is just a one of a kind recording...not many are made though it's tried every time. Also, the Hutcherson project is obviously a much more collaborative effort. I think Gibbs is....I've got a strong group of musicians, let's have some fun in front of an audience. Where Organic Vibes is coming from a much more serious view. I like them both...but Organic Vibes is one of the best organ records ever made, that's tough to compete with.

Speaking of all this....what the F happened to the Rare Groove series!!!!!! Used to look forward to it every spring/early summer for some great sunshine listening. Is it just me, or since the Norah Jones invasion has the Blue Note Army (us) gotten screwed.
