Guys who dedicate themselves to jazz organ master the pedals. HOW they play them is personal style and preference. And in all honesty, it ain't that hard. Leon Spencer Jr. gave me the best advice about playing the pedals...."20 minutes every day play left hand bass in unison with the pedals and LOOK at the pedals while you do it, after a while it's so automatic you won't need to look."
-
Larry Goldings is a self-proclaimed non pedal organist. Still he's one HELL of an organist! I do think Larry has since become acustomed to the pedals although when I have seen him he seems to look down to see if he's hitting the right ones. I don't think Larry ever came up playing real hammonds, usually clones with no pedals. He told me he doesn't even have an organ at his home. So, yeah you can become a great organist without the pedals. The guy from Soulive's a great example too. His left hand bass is monstrous. That said, if you do get a chance to play a real hammond with full pedals for any length of time, you will natuarally learn to play them as you can do so much more if you can. Also, it gives you bass lines a much fuller feel when you play left hand accented or in tandem with the pedals. Also, Lou Bennet was one of the best pedal players in the history of jazz organ. He was mainly known for his ability to play full swinging basslines on nothing but the pedals.

I can't tell if this thing is for real or more media hype about how we're all gonna die again. Again. -

Happy Birthday, Free For All

I'm playing some Blakey with Curtis Fuller in your honor! Happy Birthday! -
Congrats Stereojack and Lon! That's a real accomplishment. I love being a non-smoker and look back on those years as having wasted some valuable time. I quit on behalf of my kids when my son was two and just before my daughter was born. My son has asthma and my daughter doesn't. And although I didn't smoke in the house, I still wonder if perhaps it was a contributing factor somehow to his asthma.
-
Yeah, some people just don't seem to be as addicted to nicotine as others. My brother-in-law might smoke a whole pack of cigarettes on day and not smoke for a year. He might smoke for 3 months and then not smoke for 8 months. Pretty wild. For me, I know if I smoked a cigarette right now I'd be hooked again.
-
Congrats! Keep up the good work! I too know some former junkies who cant stop smoking. Brutal. It is still beyond me how those things are still legal at all. Thanks. Yeah, I've never known a smoker that wasn' sick of it and wanted to quit. Hell, I love sex too, but if I had to do it every 20 minutes it might grow old as well! Smoking is a big drag. My mom's visiting now. She's a lifelong smoker and spends the entire visit on our back porch smoking. I used to be the same way. Smoker's really get to know porches.

We've got so many world class guitar players here in Austin....Jimmie Vaughan, Derek O'Brien, Denny Freeman, Jon Moeller, Gary Clark Jr., Doyle Bramhall Jr., Charlie Sexton, Bill Kirchen, Redd Volkoert, ect.... Many you can see for free or playing for a tip jar. Guitar players like Derek Trucks are a tough sell to me in that we're pretty spoiled down here.
-
yes, but we never heard yours Joe. All the guitar players on the board seem to like this guy.
-
Count me as another huge fan of "On A Clear Day." Jimmy Cobb, Ron Carter and Shirley Scott are simply music personified on that recording! One of the best organ jazz sides cut and the sound is wonderful.

Does anybody know if the guitarist featured in the clip on the site is Richie Resnicoff, the same guitarist on the United States of Mind stuff? If so, he sure is blazing. Does anybody know anything about him? I'd love to hear more of his work.

Wax Poetics #15
Soul Stream replied to Brandon Burke's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Yeah, great job Brandon. Nice to see stories like this in print and I think Waxpoetics is just about the only magazine featuring stories of this depth on these topics. Would love to see your byline more in the mag. -
FYI, I did a topic search for Horace Silver before I posted this and nothing came up since the thread you're talking about doesn't have the words Horace Silver in the topic. So, yes, it is hard to find believe it or not. Matter of fact, it's impossible to find in that manner. Either way, I was just trying to spread the word for Horace. Why don't you give me a little respect. I think I've earned it on this forum.

And so your "Gimme A Break" is because I missed the earlier thread about his book? Give ME a break.

I'm not a huge fan of slide guitar to be honest. If a great player picks up the slide for a few songs, I'm in. But even slide legend Earl Hooker was also a great standard guitar player. I don't know, to each he own. But the slide lends a sort of sameness to everything it touches imho. And tell me if I'm wrong but Trucks doesn't seem to have much of a frontman persona. Kind of a blending into the background, sideman vibe I get from him. However, like Kenny Wayne Sheppard, if you can play blues guitar you're the automatic frontman even if you don't/can't sing. When bands and songs just become an excuse for guitar solos, the whole thing treads on very thin ice.

Right on so many counts as usual Jim. Lee and Hank were really music soulmates of the highest order. Also, is it just me or are Larry Ridley and Billy Higgins also one of those magical combinations. I don't know how many albums they play together on, but it seems that whenever I see that pairing on a BN, I always love the music involved. Also, love Harold.
-
Don't like this either. Somehow I'm not surprised.
-
Harold plays at Smoke a lot. Also teaches at William Patterson in NJ. Yeah, Dippin' is great no doubt. But I wonder what makes it Jim's favorite Mobley album above all others. I enjoy it a lot, but I'm not sure it's even in my top 5. How 'bout some musical insight Jim since you're a tenor player and this is your fav. Hank LP. Shine some light on it for the rest of us.

Check out Horace's new site and forum! It's baaaaaddd. 2 really cool videos posted with Horace and Andy Bey doing some United States Of Mind material. I ordered his new autobiography which came out today. Looking forward to reading it.

Allman Bros., Phish, Grateful Dead, Widespread Panic...I'll be the first to admit I've never "gotten" it. I only have positive associations of "jamming" with jazz and bluegrass to be honest (and bluegrass guys keep it short).

You kids are insane, the greatest skateboarder of all time is Tony Alva. Rodney Mullen is cool if you are afraid of transitions. Hawk is cool if you like to kick-flippity on the lip. But T.A. invented the whole enchilada. First Frontside Air. That says it all.

Dude, are you going through your "album cover art" period....or just bored?
