  1. Funny how he went from MIA to having a crappy manager so quickly. Ahhh...the music business.
  2. That's too bad. I'd like to hear him in other contexts as I'm not really a huge fan of the free thing, AND they don't make bass players like that anymore.
  3. Does Grimes play any straight ahead stuff anymore? Seems like the avant picked him up real quick and that was the end of it, what about the other side of the coin? Are we going to see Grimes with say, a Jackie McLean anytime soon, ect....(maybe these things happened already, I don't know)?
  4. I agree with Johnny E....The Jack In The Box guy in the suit. That campaign sucked minute one and has grown more and more annoying by the day/month/year/eternity.
  5. I'm waiting until they do an album of Ann Murray covers.... I wouldn't call this sort of stuff "sell-out." Just misguided stuff that will be very dated in 20 years. Why waste your efforts swimming shallow waters. Personally, I'm very, very, very tired of concept jazz albums.
  6. Haven't read ALL the posts, so this might have been brought up. But, to me, another star of the show here is RVG. I mean, this is one of the best sounding sessions of all time. That's a big reason why I love this session so much. Rudy really did it on this one. Beautiful.
  7. When you get to that level of profeciency, you kind of play who you are. I don't know Arturo's personality, but it wouldn't surprise me if his playing reflects it.
  8. Congrats C.T., come on down, I think you'll find winter down here a little more to your liking.
  9. Yes, He said they physically had them.... but not anymore.
  10. Great job Jim on getting a real distributor. That seems to be the fly in the ointment for most independent releases.
  11. Thanks Bertrand. Did contact Dorn's assistant and was told they didn't have the tapes anymore...
  12. You know, I'm not real big on all the copyright protection stuff for this very reason. The big guys line their pockets and the musician gets the "trickle-down" theory of economics. Who owns all the rights to all this music we so dearly love? Well, I don't see any Jazz musicians on the Forbes list.... Sure, some probably make some good jack...like Horace Silver,ect...people who KNEW what was up. I doubt many others knew up from down...sign here, ect. Corporations fighting over musician's corpses it seems to me.
  13. Does anybody have a link to a site...or at least a list of reissues they've done?
  14. Dug out my Reuben Wilson Groovy Situation Blue Note Water Reissue last night. Reminded me of what a superior job they do over everyone else for single reissues. Anybody know what they're releasing next?
  15. If Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise from The Sonny Clark Trio don't get you going, then something's wrong!
  16. It's a nice DVD. Production value is very low, hence the Mel Bay-edness. Kind of Home Movie Video quality. No real close-ups to speak of just a 3 shot of the whole band for the whole thing it seems. But, if you like this trio, it's a great vid.
  17. The thing I get from the One Down, One Up solo is that you have to take it as a whole. Far from individual notes, phrases, segments....it's the ENTIRETY of it that lifts you to a higher plane. 5 minutes of that solo wouldn't have the same effect. I understand the concept, and at times I'm in the right place to absorb that sort of playing, but I have the same relationship to to other long pieces. Not just Coltrane and not just this set. This IS wonderful music. No argument there. I just recognize as a listener and human being, I'm not to that level in many ways...although sometimes I make it.
  18. Yeah, but they do have popcorn and candy which is what I feel I need sometimes to get through some extended Coltrane.
  19. Is it just me, or does anybody else's mind start to wander halfway through ANY solo that lasts 24 minutes? As great as much of this material is, I have a hard time concentrating for such long periods. I do love the intesity of this stuff more than anything else. And to hear these 4 masters at their height live in this manner is pretty breathtaking.
  20. A nice little DVD from Mel Bay that's a live show from Smoke in NYC. 8 Songs, nothin' fancy camera-wise. But great musicianship.
  21. Yeah, and I'm with you on Funky People (vol 1 and 2) and the JBs anthology. After those mentioned, that's all I listen to as far as JB and his family of funksters. There's other great stuff, but that covers 90% of it. 80's stuff....Gap Band is 'bout it for me and I don't have any of their CDs to be honest.
  22. Seconded. Those two go together like peanut butter and jelly. Then get "Love, Power, Peace" Live at the Olympia. After that, everyone can kiss my ass because that's the A and Z of it all. You can have the rest....
  23. Sweet. Congrats on the continued success!
  24. You'd be surprised. I'm down to 14G available and am about only half the way through the BN catalog.
  25. Why not return it and buy the new one? ← Is that possible?
