  1. I don't know if this is his best since I haven't heard it, but it would be hard to top his playing with Crash on their Cellar Live CD "The Doctor Is In". This is a smokin' date. Kevin ← I like the Crash thing too, but it's more on the live, all-out funk tip. Too Damn Hot is real jazz from the master.
  2. I think "Too Damn Hot" is his best work that's available. The "Turban" and "Dr." are a part of jazz that's been lost to the Berkely School of Music world of jazz we live in today....it's called excitement, originality and fun.
  3. My discussion with Jim about identifying the sax players on his BFT led me back to a CD I had bought quite a while ago but didn't really listen to all that much. Harold Vick's "Straight Up," a reissue of his RCA LP from 1966. Initially I was a little put off by the fact that all the songs were relatively short, (the longest is 4:47, the shortest is 2:39). So, I popped this into my CD player while driving around last night and Vick's power and TONE just grabbed me like he always does. A real VOICE, that's always "in" but constantly searching and prodding. Anyway, don't know if DustyGroove still has this one, but it was relatively cheap and is worth picking up for anybody interested in some great 60's tenor.
  4. Oh NO!...he's gone smooooooth jazz from the looks of the miami vice outfits and beige decor...2 female vocalists....ouch.
  5. all goofiness aside, I wonder if Claude Bartee is still alive. Always dug his work with Grant.
  6. I love CD Universe. Don't know what the shipping to Europe is, but as a company they are great.
  7. Dude, you totally kicked ass on Grant Green's "Live At The Lighthouse", remember when you played that cool lick on there? That was cool. Remember when that dull announcer introduced you on that record? That was cool too. Everything about you is cool and kick ass.
  8. The Chi-Lites are hands down my favorite all time r&b vocal group. beautiful harmonies, sounds, backing....they don't make music like that anymore.
  9. Yeah...that kid is killing that Larry Young shit on that video. Especially on "Motherless Child". The bossa on "You Don't Know What Love is"...yeah it's all there. Move over Sam Yahel and Kyle Kohler there's a new Larry Youngish dude in NYC, seems like these guys are comin' out of the woodwork these days in that town. Also, he's making that stupid Hammond XK2 sound REAL good for what it is. If he can play that damn thing and make it sound like that, I can't wait to hear him on a real B3.
  10. I didn't even look at the dates section since I doubt they'll be heading to texas anytime soon. But it looks like his site is outdated in that department, only up until last March...
  11. Can't wait.
  12. Here's a 21 year old from NYC who plays in the Larry Young/Larry Goldings kind of bag. Found a video of him playing with a group here, he's playing a silly hammond emulator but just kills it.... http://www.kennedy-center.org/programs/mil..._id=LYNKANDERS# Check out the song "Minor Impact" from Avi Rothbard's "Twin Song" on this http://www.rothbardmusic.com/recordings.htm Gold's really flying.
  13. I don't know where I stumbled across this on the internet (maybe through organissimo?!?). Anyway, Avi is a guitar player with a great band...none of which I've ever heard of... This guy Jarod Gold on organ is killing in a Goldings/Young bag with a touch of Billy Gardner...and his bass is flying. Anyway, check it out. www.rothbardmusic.com has a couple of full MP3s off the record.
  14. Great work by Noj! Call me a wuss, but a lot of times the cover really gives the album a certain vibe. Nice to see that's happened here.
  15. Dude, how 'bout a cover shot....
  16. I'm pretty ho-hum about this batch of RVGs. The Connection is the only one I bought. I have the rest and, to be honest, none of them are ones I listen to. I've thrown in the "upgrade" towel on these titles that just aren't big ones for me personally. Looking forward to the next batch more as there are some more interesting titles to me. ....however, after realizing the Jimmy Smith Vol 3 is that one that was JUST frikkin' issued on CD not long ago....I DON'T think so Blue Note, not this time. Out of all the JOS titles they could do, this is absolutely last on my list. Real early stuff that has very limited appeal in the big scheme of all things Jimmy Smith.
  17. Harold Vick is DEFINATELY playing the solo after the guitar solo. I think Red and Ousley split the first solo (like you said, their's may have been spliced.) ....however I say this knowing Vick is not credited at all on the CD. Eyes say one thing EARS say another. Guess we'll never really know. I'm no tenor player but I've listened to Vick probably more than I've listened to Sonny Rollins. ← O.K>>>I'M TOTALLY CHANGING MY MIND! I think it's pretty darn easy to figure this one out after you listen to other cuts from the album a little bit. Solo 1 is Red Holloway and Solo 2 is Harold Ousley. No Harold Vick anywhere (I'm eatin' my words). Matter of fact, isn't the coda 2 tenors playing in unison? Well Jim, looks like you gotta put your thinking cap (and ears) back on for a minute.
  18. Joe, I didn't either. I actually thought it was more Benson than Martino on first listen. Then changed my mind. Actually it's VERY un-Martino. But it's even MORE un-Benson upon closer analysis. (CD says it's Martino)
  19. Harold Vick is DEFINATELY playing the solo after the guitar solo. 20. O.K....to MY ears....Red Holloway plays a chorus followed by Harold Ousley with a chorus... and then Red returning again later for a chorus... But the REAL story here is friggin' McDuff and Joe Dukes. NOBODY swings the bass like this. Say Groove Holmes all you want, but for me in the organ bass hiearchy McDuff reigns supreme. Jack sounds like Ray Brown kickin' someone's ass behind the club...
  21. O.K...I'm gonna hafta listen and break it up....
  22. Some things in life I just don't GET. This is one of them.
  23. ...no, I made it to Amoeba. A friend was doing an in-store there, so we hung and I picked up a couple of things. Great store.
  24. Wow, didn't know there WERE that many! Which of them do you consider the standout discs?
  25. Funny you mentioned this scene. This was the only scene that, to me, didn't fit in the movie AT ALL. Tim Robbins charactor seemed tacked on, which it apparently was from the original.
