  1. Good blog, just checked it out! Keep it up! I'm surprised Mosaic Records has not set up a forum on their site.
  2. LOVE IT! Hopefully he's got a halfway decent system to play all his music on...
  3. I have been on the fence about this one for a while....I have a lot of Oscar Peterson, and that's probably the reason I haven't gotten this. I'm sure when it goes to running low (if I haven't ordered it by then) I will get it. I do have the Ahmad Jamal set and love it, so time will tell about the Oscar Peterson set. Any thoughts on this set? (I'll check previous discussion). Enjoy listening to the set ! And the Lou Donaldson set is very enjoyable and Ray Barretto is quite the addition to the music The Mosaic doubled my OP collection from 7 to 14. (I'm not counting "sideman" recordings.) To be honest with you, the only reason I have the Mosaic is because I found a copy that was only $6.96 delivered. (all 7 discs but no box/no booklet) Having said that, the music contained in the set is excellent and I'm very much enjoying it. If you already own a lot of him, there's probably not much of a reason to be in any hurry to go after this. OP is almost always excellent so this is more or less more of the same. There's still a seller on Ebay offering this set new/delivered for about $60.00. While I like Oscar, I'm not sure I'd even go for it at that price. It's agreat deal and great news for a lot of fans but my love for OP isn't really compelling enough for me to want to seek out more than I already have. I'm pretty certain this added to the 7 discs I already have will be the extent of my OP collection. Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the set in any way. The performances are excellent and his vocals (sounding much like Nat King Cole) are a very welcome addition and adds nice variety to the set. I was already happy with what I had but this was a fantastic addition I couldn't pass up for $1.00/disc. Thanks for the info and your opinion on the set I would have jumped on the set at that price too!!! I got the Lou Donaldson for $39.99 with box and booklet, mint. I HAD to jump on it!!! (What a deal). I don't feel bad about getting a steal like that, Mosaic has gotten PLENTY of my money

  5. The Complete Verve Johnny Hodges Mosaic. This is BEAUTIFUL music Listening to Zag Zig, Hodges is such a soulful player. Just pure from the heart. Do people play like this anymore???? PLAY THE MELODY PEOPLE Ok, ok, I'm all for going "out there" but it's nice to hear Hodges. I think "Fatha" Hines said you can do a lot of things with water; you can make beer, lemonade, coffee, but sometimes pure, cold water is the best. That's what Hodges was. Not a direct quote, but that's the idea
  6. Speaking of EMI, Citigroup just took over there...
  7. I would send them an email suggestion. Sometimes they listen
  8. I think with Mosaic's remastering the horrible stereo sound will be rectified
  9. Looks like the prices are trending lower Seriously though, I remember when an Amazon seller had the Slack for $999.00
  10. Look for some of his own sessions! There's the OJCCD pairing a date of his featuring Mulligan with the Fantasy Mulligan quartet tracks, for instance. Also lately some yurpeen boots... on topic: wrapping up my Hill 63-66 listen with two gos through the session for "Compulsion" and two (or three - I'm in the middle of the first now) to the not-so-great session with Sam Rivers. SWEET! Thanks I will take a look around Amazon. Chubby Jackson with Gerry Mulligan??? Sounds great
  11. If you're enjoying that one, then be sure to check out it's sister recording, "Serenity". Both Anniversary and Serenity are great albums! My library, of all places, had these. I love when you can access good music and get some bang for your tax buck
  12. Disk XI of the 1932-1940 Duke Ellington big band set. Finally doing some intensive listening to this disk. Wonderful. The sound quality on this disk is stunning!
  13. Listening to the Woody Herman Columbia Recordings Disk VII. I am SO glad I got this set The vocals (which are plenty) are good and do not sound dated . Woody's clarinet and saxophone sound very good in this set, I am not a fan of his 60s (Philips recordings included) playing---his band was GREAT though. I am sure most on this board that wanted this set already have it, since it came out 5+ years ago. BUT if anyone is sitting on the fence and love big band music and great arrangements----all I can say is get it Chubby Jackson is a revelation. WOW. He is extremely propulsive! This set has FANTASTIC sound, another for Malcolm Addey (though I bet the source material was pristine). Haven't gotten to the booklet yet, but I bet it will be enlightening and enjoyable.
  14. LOL! I actually liked that song, I know, cheap 50s pop... Glad I bought the set, I don't think it's one of the best Mosaics, in terms of musical satisfaction...but the sound is TOP quality (thank you Malcolm Addey). I was expecting the early 50s sessions with Benny Carter and Willie Smith, et. al. would be a little rough sounding, but they are crystal clear!!! I would recommend this set to anyone who likes small group swing or who is a drummer AND of course Buddy Rich fanatics. I didn't find the drum solos annoying, and there aren't that many extended solos. Now I just have to convince myself to get the Johnny Smith...
  15. Hey all, I received the Buddy Rich Mosaic, it's great, especially the session with Frank Wess, Ben Webster, Thad Jones, Freddie Green, O.P., Joe Newman SWINGIN'! Anyways, I received NUMBER 2973 So either this was a return or they have only sold around 3,000 sets...TIMED OUT?
  16. What great music!!! Congrats. I was wondering your take on the Threadgill? I have the Ellington (small groups and 30s big band) and they are great to have, Jamal is great and I have the Duke&Ella on various cd's (Cote d' Azur and Soul Call) but I would like to get the LP set.
  17. He told me he felt my pain, appreciated the feedback, and had forwarded my email to the "powers that be". That's pretty funny--there are only three guys in that operation. Not sure which "power" he'd forward it to--maybe one of the other two guys sitting next to him?! gregmo I was thinking the same thing LOL!
  18. Listening to (devouring) my NEW Buddy Rich and Woody Herman Columbia sets!!! They are both fantastic AND the Woody Herman is SUCH a delight! Surprised with this one....GREAT set!
  19. We are spoiled in comparison to 1.5-3 months!!! Talk about anticipation! Hopefully you can get the package in several weeks this time. Let me know your opinion on the Smith and Carter/Bradford sets as I don't have either. I'd probably get the Johnny Smith before the Carter/Bradford--just because it would fit my tastes better. That said, I have never been disappointed with Mosaic set.
  20. WOWZERS! I guess I didn't realize that shipping was $7 for a select....I normally order a lot... so I can get a lot of bang for my shipping buck... but, what if I wanted just a single cd that floated my boat...IT WOULD STILL BE $4....anywhere else it would range from FREE to $2.95. Do they even offer USPS anymore??? I think it's an option on their site but I have always received UPS shipments. They should offer free shipping for orders over $300 or something. I know they occasionally offer free shipping or 10% off sales, but I haven't seen any lately.
  21. They NEED to consider your suggestion. I am sick of their farmed out shipping and UPS ground takes FOREVER. Overpriced---I know they need to cover their costs, but they really are making several dollars per shipping in profit, especially with a UPS account with quantity discounts. It's weird, 5 years ago, I could swear it only took several days to come in. Order Monday get it Wednesday, to Minneapolis I just ordered two sets on Friday, Jan. 21 and they are coming in tomorrow. Is my count correct, 5 business days from time of order (in the morning) to delivery??? I am all for anticipation, but I almost have to plan when to order, so that I can get them during the next week. I can get $3.99 overnight shipping via Amazon Prime, FREE 2 day shipping and Media Mail would be FINE. At least they deliver on Saturdays...
  22. I think for me, the pull will come when it goes to "Last Chance." Then I will have to do some soul searching. Of the in-print sets, the Smith set has been lower on the list, for example I REALLY want: The Chu Berry set, Jazz Crusaders, Armstrong probably before getting the Smith. The fact the Johnny Smith set is now running low has thrown a serious wrench in my plans... I MAY HAVE TO FORM A MOSAIC TRIAGE LIST.
  23. I was sleeping...woke up, put on the Benny Goodman Small Groups 1944-1955. It's simple Goodman was a clarinet genius. I don't think there's a bad song in the entire 4 cds. Since getting the Mosaic Benny Goodman Orchestra set and the small groups set, I have totally changed my stance on mid-century clarinet "jazz." I enjoy the Artie Shaw Bluebird and Victor Sessions too! 5 years ago I would have NEVER owned any Shaw or Goodman but now, I love their music BACK TO BED
