  1. I was wondering when this would happen.... This was one of my first Mosaic's ( and Ellington Reprise, Hodges Verve sessions) and always have had a respect for the set, its musicians and its place in history. If anyone hasn't gotten this set that has even a remote interest in Basie, or big band, get this. Just looked up when I bought this (Jun 2005 #1061) and now I have 46 sets.....I love what Mosaic stands for and produces----and this forum to be able to discuss!!!
  2. Well, I think it's a good thing they are reissuing pre-bop and post-mid 1960s jazz. Generally, those eras have been more or less neglected in comparison with 1950s-mid 1960s jazz. Apart from Mosaic only Nessa and a few other labels have reissued post-mid 1960s jazz, and Mosaic have done pre-bop sets before, of course. Thanks for the mention and I agree with your other observations. If Mosaic issues anything you might find interesting, buy it if you have the means. This era is ending and the future is not better. I find your "fringes of early Jazz and 70s (Braxton, Threadgill)?" to be stupid and insulting. YMMV. I regret using the word "fringe", I did not mean any insult from that comment on any type or era of music. I have a high respect for all types of music/musicians. Please don't judge me on one comment.
  3. Hmmm... I've have nothing under the tree this Christmas WTF?!?!?! CrAzY. Frustrating. I was hoping to have this in my hands a week or two from now... Thanks for the heads up.
  4. I love the convenience of streaming, downloads. But I want the physical product!!! Hard drives don't last forever. With that said, I do load all of my CDs into iTunes, a lot faster access.
  5. WTF. All the jazz greats are rolling in their graves right now. Funny though!!!
  6. Not that I'm complaining about Mosaic, but they seem to have been releasing a lot of EARLIER Jazz lately, I guess all the 50s and 60s Blue Note, Basie, Ellington, small group, etc., etc. has been released and now they are going to the fringes of early Jazz and 70s (Braxton, Threadgill)?
  7. HAHA! I probably should ignore this set too, as I'm more of a 50s-60s jazz fan, but HEY, it's a new Mosaic!
  8. Just when my day couldn't get better (for my low standards)....IT JUST DID! Thanks for the scoop!!!
  9. The Ellington Big Band set or the Small Groups? I would say, for comparison sake, the sound on the new Hawkins set will be at least as good as the Ellington Big Band set. Ah, crap, with all this talk about the set, NOW I'm getting excited!!! It's nice to know that there are people out there that enjoy a new Mosaic release as much or more than me Now the website says late November. Well....it's less than a month away.
  10. I have a feeling the sound quality will be similar to the recent Lunceford set (which was VERY acceptable), I think there are quite a few tracks from the 20s, they may be rougher. I agree with everyone who sided with having less noise reduction, because in the end you will be exposed to more of the music that was really recorded, instead of a sterile, reduced, over-digitized, version of what the engineer thinks it should sound like. Also, I have ALWAYS found Mosaic to present the best possible sound that they can with the earliest source recordings. They are the BEST at what they do. I think the sound engineer on this set, Andreas Meyer, is really hitting his stride with Mosaic. I, at first, did not care for the Artie Shaw set he did, but have since changed my tune. All in all, I can't wait, and for those who are hesitant to buy, I'll try to write a short review. With all that said....I MISS Malcolm Addey, what happened to him?! I don't think he has done a Mosaic set in some time, now that was a remastering expert...but I digress.
  11. This might not help as much as previous posters, but I use a MacPro with two 1 TB hard drives, and copy each CD to iTunes. I've done A/B sessions and CDs played from a Rega Cd player and those off of iTunes amount to a negligible sound difference. I haven't A/B'ed SACD vs. iTunes yet... I have friends that have had good luck with the Western Digital external hard drives. It's a long process to convert CD's into to .WAV (or other sound files) but the convenance REALLY pays off. Especially if you don't want to listen to the whole album, or want to make customized playlists.
  12. Is it posted online yet? I am curious to know what his review was. I certainly like the set a lot....
  13. Stan Kenton: The Complete Capitol Recordings of The Holman and Russo Charts. Disk III. Beautiful sound, and musicianship. Lee Konitz is astounding. Very enjoyable and a good change of pace from my steady diet of Ellington and Basie.
  14. If it'll help, I have the CD, listened to it maybe once. It's non-essential. The recording quality is kinda weird and there are better live recordings of the Rich band out there. With that said, even if I knew what I know now, and didn't have it, I'd still be tempted to get it...because you never want a Mosaic to slip by. Aren't there any sellers in the UK that have this title for sale?
  15. A Don Byas set would be AWESOME! I asked about a Webster set, and they said almost everything has been released... I am still waiting on a Marshal Royal set, probably a Select. There are about 4-5 Concord Records that he did and most STAYED on LP, and he did some solo stuff in the early 60s...but there is probably too low of a demand. Another Hodges set? Mid to late 60s Verve recordings??? I ordered the Chu Berry Set sometime ago, and got curious when they would get more in. Obviously the website says Nov. 2011, but now it's getting pushed back into 2012 because of "cash flow reasons", according to Fred at Mosaic. ?!? Well, hopefully Mosaic has a good Holiday season, and gets a little more liquid....
  16. I bet the Mosaic will thrash the Affinity as far as sound quality, packaging and booklet go. I tend to agree Hans and that's why I wrote that this set is a must. The sound samples on the Mosaic website are VERY nice, great sound quality. I'm sure the whole set won't be at this level, but I'm plesantly surprised so far. I can't wait to have this set in my hands
  17. Here it is!!! http://www.mosaicrecords.com/prodinfo.asp?number=251-MD-CD I personally cannot wait, and there are sound clips available Mid-Late November ship date (hopefully).
  18. I got the 5 CD version. I had the High and Mighty Hawk in some other format -- it probably is the best of the bunch. I'm enjoying the Rex Stewart, but it is kind of old-timey even when it was recorded. Still Willie the Lion Smith is on 3 of the cuts. I wasn't as taken with the Cozy Cole or Earl Hines (as much as I had hoped anyway). I am going to listen to the Budd Johnson and Strayhorn (Hodges) in the next day or two. I do have reasonably high hopes for them. I'm interested in what you think about the Strayhorn session!!!
  19. Duke Ellington "The Reprise Studio Recordings" "Fiddler on the Diddle" Ray Nance on violin, the SAXOPHONE section and drums and bass swingin' away! I could listen to that all day. Sam Woodyard's brushes are some of the best.
  20. Good point about camera angles, fractions of an inch, etc. Watching it live, I thought it was a touchdown, but then in replays I wasn't so sure. I also think the officials were biased....but whatever, as long as the Packers win this afternoon!
  21. I too am a Wisconsin fan, and....all I can say is I'm looking forward to the Packers wasting the Vikings this afternoon. I will say that it was an exciting game, and many swear words were used the last minute of the game
  22. Got a relatively "good" deal on "The Complete Roulette Maynard Ferguson", the bands he had were GREAT. Also, great audio quality. I had to pull the trigger on this set sooner or later. Also, I have the Holman and Russo Kenton Mosaic set coming this week!!! I'm catching up on sets that I missed out on in the 90s, because I was too young to be hip to Mosaic. Also, looking forward to the Coleman Hawkins Mosaic coming out Also have been on an Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis kick lately and have purchased an Arnett Cobb and Lockjaw session, also got the Complete Cookbook sessions from Solar, I had one session already, but felt it would be a good deal to get the set. LOVE LOCKJAW!!! He must have been INTIMIDATING on the band stand!
  23. Today is a Mosaic Saturday: Maynard, then disk 5 of the Horace Parlan, a little Benny Goodman big band, Oliver Nelson and now am on Sam Rivers "Secret Love", next I think will be Mobley. WONDER how much longer Hank Mobley will last?!?! I mean it's been around a long time. Everyone who wanted it must have bought it by now. I mean I'm glad that it's still available, since it's a great set, but MAN.
