  1. I have also written Mosaic to release the 60s Verve sessions. Some good stuff. Maybe I'll write again today!!!
  2. I know Mosaic couldn't find some of the sessions. I think they were West Coast sessions with Hodges and Mel Lewis on drums. It's listed on the discography in the back of the booklet. Not sure of the exact specifics. Perhaps the masters were destroyed. A pity and a shame. Thanks for the pictures Jazzbo! :tup
  3. Spinnin' the Joe Newman, Al Cohn, Freddie Green Select. Disk 3. While sipping a Surly cynic ale. It's a nice beer from Minneapolis.
  4. Never saw this picture before. When Giants walked the Earth.... Was that the "Jazz Party" session when Dizzy and Jimmy Rushing sat in? LOVE any Hodges thread on this forum. One of the most beautiful, soulful tones in music...ever. A blues master too.
  5. I'll probably get it. I enjoy this format, and I like James Carter. Kind of a modern day Lockjaw Davis. I'll post a review once I finish listening. Thanks for the heads up!
  6. He is also one of the tenor soloists on "The Count meets The Duke" Columbia records 1961? On the Mosaic Count Basie Live Roulette recordings he plays a great solo on "Segue in C" and also "Discommotion".
  7. Budd Johnson is great! I too think sometimes he coasted, but when you had that much skill, it still sounds good. I think he was the one who showed Ben Webster how to play the saxophone when he was in Kansas City. At any rate, I own the Mosaic Quincy Jones ABC/MERCURY Big Band Jazz Sessions, and it includes Budd's tenure with the band (excluding perhaps a few live recorded dates from Europe). You can check Mosaic's discography for exact information, but I believe he can be heard on the following LP's: "The Birth of a Band", "The Great Wide World of Quincy Jones", "I Dig Dancers", "The Zurich Concert". There might be more but that's all I saw. He does have some great, swingin' solos and he's also heard on soprano leading the saxes on the tune "Blues in the Night" and also on soprano on "Choo Choo Ch' Boogie". I am really pleased owning this set, the sound is great, the bands are superb (a lot of features for Phil Woods, and a STACKED trumpet section including Ernie Royal on lead). Again, I do believe there are some live recordings that aren't in the Mosaic set, but you hear some good Budd Johnson solos, as well as Benny Golson, Sam "The Man" Taylor, Eric Dixon, etc. He also did a studio recording with his brother Keg on trombone (early 60s), that is good too. Hope that helps! Budd Johnson is great! I too think sometimes he coasted, but when you had that much skill, it still sounds good. 8. ...which arrived today... #127 for the Luncerford and #4816 (!) for the Hampton set! Those are two GREAT sets! #4816, that means the Hampton might be moving to the "Running Low" category soon....Get it while you can everybody! I was ASTOUNDED with the sound quality on this set, and the music is very enjoyable. Some of the best uptempo Hodges playing I've heard. Also, you can't beat a horn section of Benny Carter, Chu Berry, Coleman Hawkins and Dizzy!!!
  9. Hey, that single was THE first Woody Herman recording I ever bought. It introduced me to a powerful, swingin' band, that was right up there with Basie. I immediately loved Sal Nistico's playing, such swing and technique. And now I have all of 'em that Mosaic has put out. The single and the select may be my favorite though The first song on the Select is "Mo-Lasses" and I think the Herman band plays this composition better than the Basie band, where it came from via Joe Newman. Bill Chase is certainly on fire there! I am finally getting to the Freddie Green, Joe Newman and Al Cohn Select and is beautiful music, I think my blood pressure will be lowered from this easy swingin' music. It's certainly been a Mosaic Records weekend! :tup
  10. Just received the Freddie Green, Joe Newman, Al Cohn Select and the Woody Herman Select. I NEEDED a Mosaic fix, so I put in an order. Holy Crap! The Woody Herman select is SMOKIN'. I am serious. Swingin' band, great energy, and tunes. WOW. I haven't even made it to the other Select, but I'm sure that will be wonderful as well. I usually like the BIG Mosaic sets, but this is really knocking me out. :tup :tup :tup P.S. I can't wait for the Hawkins set and the Lucky Thompson Select to come out as well!!! Fred at Mosaic said they will be out before 2012. Hopefully before Christmas...
  11. That is a larger than life Mosaic Select!!!
  12. Sorry, it is a Strayhorn date. Just had Hodges on the mind.
  13. Anybody get this yet? Thoughts, opinions? I'm interested in primarily the Hodges (can this be gotten anywhere else?), the Budd Johnson and the Buddy Tate sessions. Thanks!
  14. The Turrentine is great!!! I received the Tolliver when it came out, and haven't gotten to it yet. I've been on a big Basie kick recently, and am waiting for the right time to listen to the Tolliver big band stuff.
  15. Just bought a used copy (NM condition) of The Complete Maynard Ferguson Roulette recordings from Mosaic. I've wanted this for awhile and one came up for a reasonable price, so I puled the trigger!!! Also, there was an Amazon listing for a Count Basie Roulette Live recordings (Mosaic) set a Johnny Hodges Verve (Mosaic) set that were priced suspiciously low (like $30) but I bought them, so we shall see what arrives, I could have gotten a great deal....
  16. Saxophone: - James Carter, Eric Alexander Trombone: - Wycliffe Gordon Clarinet: - Anat Cohen Piano: - Dan Nimmer (LCJO, etc.) Trumpet: - Sean Jones, Freddie Hendrix, Roy Hargrove I'll try and think of some more, but these people that I have listed, I can identify within a few notes---and they have individual ideas and sounds. Maybe these are "safe" choices, but they come to mind first. Cool topic!!!
  17. The Complete Capitol Recordings of Woody Herman. Fine, swingin' music. Great sound quality. Woody ALWAYS had great bands.
  18. After work listen to the Lunceford set. Disk 2 is swingin' away in only the style Lunceford could.
  19. Thanks for the feedback everybody!!! I should've ordered this years ago, but it'll be back in stock soon, and will order then!!! Although it makes no sense to order just one Select....I might get the Chu set too since I don't have it and it looks great. I'm listening to the Count Basie Roulette Studio recordings...it's wonderful and inspiring music. Such a band! Specifically the Kansas City Suite now.
  20. This is one of the Selects I'm waiting for Mosaic to get back in print . Seems like it will be very enjoyable, swingin' music, played by true greats. How's the sound quality?
  21. Listening to disk 4 of the Horace Parlan, nice swingin' stuff!
  22. The Hampton is very enjoyable if you like pre-WWII jazz. Lots of Ellingtonians; Hodges, Cootie Williams, Webster and Harry Carney. There's also a session with a young Dizzy with Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins, Chu Berry and Benny Carter. The sound quality is TOP NOTCH (I don't think I've heard a better Mosaic set of this period. Also, later in the set there is a session with Marshal Royal, Ray Perry, etc. that is swingin' Lots of good stuff, and as I said, if you like 30s-40s small group jazz with vocals, you'll love this set. It's a steal at this price. I'll probably be getting the Jazz Crusaders box, I've got the Hampton and Turrentine boxes which are GREAT! Of course, I don't have the Charlie Parker boxed set yet, and maybe I'll finally get around to ordering that too. NOTHING LIKE A MOSAIC SALE!!!
  23. I am a Johnny Hodges/Ben Webster nut, and even though I had the Mosaic Hodges set, somehow I thought this was something outside of the set. So I pulled the trigger, and it's the same darn thing. Perhaps I should have consulted the Mosaic booklet before pulling the trigger. AHHHHRRRGGGHH.
  24. The Sarah Vaughan Roulette set. It's beautiful music, and of course, there's Sassy. Incomparable. Sure there's a lot of fluff and corny pop, but man, can she sing!!! Also, very nice sound quality in this set.
  25. I pre-ordered mine quite a while ago and received #238, and definitely agree about how they are sent out in sequential order. I have asked Mosaic about that, and that's what they say. Good news for Mosaic!!! The more they sell, the more that they will release.
